YEECH!!!! Violenced for its own sake., Sep 20 2001
Mass killing and destruction with no point. Also has miserable acting. Amazingly in typical "John Woo" movie fashion the hero survives hundreds of gun shots fired at him along with several deadly knives. The horrible thing about violent movies like this is that it glorifys violence. Impressionable people think that it would be okay to engage in fights like this.

FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES, July 16 2001
I am 67 years old, so I guess that I am a child at heart. The cast was uniformally wonderful. I am a big fan of Mara Wilson, and all of the cast performed equally well. The movie is a fantasy, with it's basic moral that faith can do miracles. While, unfortunately this is not always true, in this movie it certainly provides a feel good ending. So, please, lose your disbelief and enjoy this movie.

HUH? WHAT?, Jun 20 2001
This movie just does not know where to go. It starts out as a gun/mob/government action movie. Then changes briefly to a family values movie. Next, a conflict of western/eastern mores and values. Then, becomes a love story with a lot of very cheesy jokes. And, increasingly, becomes a mystery, fantasy. Almost none of the characters including Chow Yun Fat maintain any kind of consistency in their behavior. Some are cruel, then kind or vice versa. Some are silly and then become very clever. Mr. Fat is all of the above. There are some nice visuals occaisionally. The major climactic scene involves a massive shootout that is totally unbelievable. By the time the romantic end arrives, I really didn't care.

POOR SOUND AND CHOREOGRAPHY, Jun 7 2001
If you want to see a very good version of "The Gondoliers," try the version distributed by Opera World in VHS. This version was very poorly miked and virtually incomprehensible. The added scenes added nothing interesting. The choreography and production values were poor. I was very disapointed as this play is my favorite by Gilbert and Sullivan.

Low budget but very clever, May 27 2001
In this obviously low budget film there is far superior entertainment than most bloated big spending blockbusters. Though the main character's life is unfocused at first, the story is very carefully pieced together. While bicycle racing is used as the main plot sevice, the theme applies to anybody who has a goal in life and wants to succeed. The characters are all very real, even the bicycle store proprieter who could seem a bit mythic. I thoroughly enjoyed this clever movie, and I suspect anybody who dreams about improving their life will too.

INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES, Sep 20 2000
A classic musical romantic comedy. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were at their superb best. Their onscreen chemistry while always good peaked in this movie. The supporting cast is also excellent. While the story is romantized the yearning of people for liberty is presented well. The costumes and sets were all beautiful. The only serious flaw is that the movie was presented in black and white.
