1.0 out of 5 stars Very weak book, March 19 2014
I have just finished reading this book in about 20 minutes. A few things stand out to me:

1. The writer is badly out of touch with the realities of the music industry. She is clearly still stuck in the pre-Internet age, and even starts her book with a page on the evils of downloading instead of buying CDs.

2. The writer is neurotically self indulgent, assuming her personal experiences and emotional responses as the thoughts and feelings of her reader. She does this to point that borders on sexism.

3. The examples she provides are weak, not true hit songs.

4. Perhaps most importantly, the amount of content is scant at best. This is fluffy lightweight writing, way too many words, far too few ideas.

I highly recommend skipping this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible writing, Sept. 12 2013
Terrible writing, the worst kind of quasi-intellectual nonsense that pollutes academia. This verbose shell of hollow writing is pathetically light on content, with language that dilutes concepts and methods in a misleadingly simplistic manner. To top it off, the book is poorly designed, concerned with unrelated aesthetics more than anything else. The whole book represents the worst kind of self indulgent design and writing. Designers deserve and are capable of so much more than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best game ever?, Sept. 8 2013
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mass Effect Trilogy (Video Game)
Taken as a whole, I think the Mass Effect trilogy makes a strong argument for being one of the greatest games ever made. An action/role-playing epic (120+ hours) that spans the galaxy, minor shortcomings are made up with relentless ambition in scope, magnitude and emotional range. It starts slowly, and builds gradually into a juggernaut of a game. I look forward to whatever Bioware does next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second only to Dark Twisted Fantasy, June 22 2013
This review is from: Yeezus (Audio CD)
Not much to say. If you want to hear Kanye's first three albums again, so listen to them. If you want to hear one of the most interesting and talented musicians & producers at work today, you should at the very least give this a listen. So many interesting ideas. Not everything works, but you can see a master at work in everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album I've heard all year, Dec 28 2011
This review is from: Bon Iver (Audio CD)
What a pleasant treat for one of the last new albums I've listened to all year to stand out as the best. Layered, nuanced, subtle and overwhelming all at once. A much more ambitious and challenging album than it's surface veneer initially reveals, this easily trumps anything Bon Iver has done to date by a giant step.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overrated, March 31 2004
This review is from: Elephant (Audio CD)
Not a bad album, but really nothing great. Some good singles, but very inconsistent as an album. I think over time most of the White Stripes catalogue will fall into the novelty rack - this is at best gutsy and grabbing, but at worst poorly done. Yeah it can be fun, but doesn't go anywhere really. I heard this album was a huge breakthrough for them. I think the opposite. They were a novelty act, who when stepping up to the big time, are revealed for their thinness. I was dissapointed enough to sell it, but don't get me wrong, it ain't all bad, and can be fun if that's what you're into these days.
