5.0 out of 5 stars This is a classic...., Oct. 3 2003
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were two over the hill actresses by the time they made this movie. It was so brave of them to make this lurid shocker; it revied their sagging careers and made moviegoers line up at the box offcie. The movie is lurid, outrageous and one of my all time favorites. Bette Davis goes over the top (and that's saying alot for Bette) as a former child star gone to seed. She slouches around her home in a fright wig, bedroom slippers, and makeup that looks like she put it on with a putty knife. She stays drunk and bitter while she tries to revive her stage show from about 50 years ago. Meanwhile, her wheelchair bound sister is trapped upstairs. As Bette goes mad, her poor sister becomes a victem of torture and abuse. The whole show is shocking and outrageous and not to be missed. The DVD is a nice widescreen presentation; the picture and sound are great. Unfortunaely, there are no extras worth mentioning (would have loved a making of docutmentary); not even an original theatrical trailer.

There must be some subliminal message in this movie that I respond to. I have watched it over and over. The Countess is so beautifully evil; she made me fall under her spell. I have heard her described as a "Satanic Auntie Mame". She makes evil so seductive and fun. Even though I have a dark obessesion fop this movie, freinds I have shown it to describe it as boring and slow. (Hang on, talking about it made me get up and put it in the DVD player again). It's not for everyone, at least give it a try.

For years I had to watch a pan and scan video of this dark, sad movie. Now Criterion has released an enhanced widescreen DVD which is like a Holy Grail for lovers of this underground cult classic. This film makes the list of classic murderous, hetro couples genre along with BONNIE AND CLYDE, BADLANDS, THE GETAWAY and GUN CARZY. Ray Fernandez is a hot looking Latin stud; he fleeces lonley women who respond to his ad in the type of Lonely Hearts correspondence club found in the back pages of seedy magzines. He only takes their money and their hearts until he hooks up with a fat, miserable nurse named Martha. While pretending to be brother and sister, they go on a murderous spree as they hook up with spinsters, widows and an ugly assortment of women who look for love in the wrong place. Although there is only two scenes of actual violence, this is one of the most violent movies I have ever seen due to the ruthlessness, and cold blooded greed of Ray and Martha. It's dark, violent, and extremely brutal; not recommened for the squeamish.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first R-rated movie without Mom, June 22 2003
This movie was a really big deal for me because it ther first R-rated movie I was able to see without being accompained by a guardian. I proudly showed my ID to prove I was old enough to join the art house movie going crowd on a Saturday night and entered the theater all proud and mature. After watching the movie, I left the theater depressed because the movie was so dark and gloomy with an ugly message on the state of humanity; I was also excited because I could tell my friends all the nasty, shocking things I had seen. Dirk Bogarde plays the night porter in a high class hotel in Vienna. Charlotte Rampling shows up looking stunningly beautiful and elegant. They recognize each other; he was an official in the Nazi party and she was a teenager in his concentration camp. They begin a depraved S & M affair while in the camp. When they find each other in the hotel, their sick relationship is rekindled and the depravity continues. Seeing it again years later the whole thing seems silly, depraved, and pretenious but still alot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitchcock's masterpiece gets masterful treatment on DVD, June 21 2003
This review is from: Psycho (Widescreen) (DVD)
There has been plenty written about PYSCHO; we all know it deserves it's placement on the pedestal of filmaking-as-art form. Instead of writing more about the film itself, allow me to rave about the excellence of this DVD. First, you get a beautiful widescreen presentation of the movie (which I had never seen until I got this DVD). The picture is sharp and clear and the sound does justice to those Bernard Herrmann conducted strings. Then there are the extras and what an extras feast! There is a 90 minutes documentary on the making of the film with interviews with Pat Hitchcock, Janet Leigh, Joseph Stefano and others who were there when the film was made. There is an original theatrical trailer which is has Hitch himself selling his film. There is the famous shower scene with the music and without the music which was interesting to compare. There is an extended newsreel footage showing the opening and promotion of the film with scenes of people lining up to see the movie. And there are lots of publicity photos and behind the scence photos. The booklet included contains an essay written by Pat Hitchcock about her father and her experience making this movie. This DVD is a MUST HAVE for any fan of Hitchcock.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A CLASSIC, Dec 14 2002
My list of all time great horror movies include "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Night of the Living Dead", "The Exorsist", "Psycho", "Suspiria". I must now add to that list: "The Blair Witch Project". This movie is really intense, original and scares the [stuff] out of me. I have felt paranoid about hiking in the woods ever since seeing this movie; and I used to love hiking. Classic. Classic. Classic. Enough said.

4.0 out of 5 stars I finally got to see all of this movie, April 2 2002
Back in '63,when i was 9 years old, mommie dearest dropped me off at our neighborhood theater to see BLACK SABBATH. About 10 minutes after the picture started I mad a frantic dash for the exit; I had never been so frightened by a movie in my life. The movie opened with Boris Karloff introducing three tales of terror. The first one was called "A Drop of Water". It concerned a woman who gets a phone call late at night; she is asked to go prepare a corpse for burial. When she arrives, she is greeted by a spooked housekeeper who is bababling about a witches, evil and dying while in a trance. The coprse is an awful looking thing that resembles a cheap doll with most of it's substance sucked out; and it grins with an evil, knowing smile. On the corpse's finger there is a ring the woman wants. After she steals it, the coprse's glare seems to be saying to the woman that "YOU REALLY SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT". During all this a glass of water is overturned and Mario Bava's camera focuses on the dripping water. Once she gets home she is bothered by the sound of dripping water which creeps her out because it sounds like the water in the witches apartment. Then the lights go out. When she catches a glimpse of the corpse in her apartment I ran for the exit as fast as my legs would carry me. Last night I was able to watch the rest of the movie. Although the movie didn't scarce me as bad this time, I was able to appriciate how well it was made. IMAGE entertainment presents the origianl Italian version with English subtitles. (It's strange to see Boris Karloff dubbed into Italian). The order of the movies have changed. The picuture is widesreened and sharp; audio is excellent. "A Drop of Water" by far the best story of the trio. It's full of atmospheric mystery with images that are the stuff nightmares are made of and is the best thing Mairo Bava ever did. There are two other stories which are good but not as effective. The first has a hot looking Italian babe in plauged by threatening phone call. The second has Boris Karloff as a Wurderlock which is a vampire. It's scary with great visuals but a bit slow. But "A Drop of Water" is so good, this DVD would be an excellent choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian Slasher At It'sBest, Dec 5 2001
I don't watch Dario Argento movies for plots that make sense or characters who act logically. I watchArgento movies for extremely tense scenes of suspense and shocking gore. I watch for his ability to move a camera around so in such interesting ways that I have to pause, rewind and watch a scene again. "The Bird with the Crystal Plummage" delivers everyting I love about Argento movies. There is a really cool retro '70's look to the film with a great soundtrack by Ennico Morricone.

5.0 out of 5 stars SICK, SICK, SICK, SICK, Nov. 13 2001
This review is from: Basket Case (DVD)
Basket Case is WAY out there and so sick that the mouths of those watching it fall open in disbelief. This movie was made outside of Hollywood; the sets consists of a seedy flophouse (not a Hollywood soundstage designed to look like a flophouse), a 42nd street grindhouse movie theater, and what looks like an abandoned building that is supposed to be a doctor's office. The actors and extras look like they were not saleried but worked for a chance to be on film and/or a bottle of wine. There was not much money to be spent on this movie. Instead, this horror masterpiece relied on imagination and a twisted sense of humor to make it work. The story concerns a pair of separated Simease twins. Duane, the normal (normal as in being able to walk on his own and not scare people with his looks) carries his brother around in a wicker basket. The bother looks like a big glob of putty with claws and teeth. Their goal is to exact revenge on the doctor's who separated them. There is lots of blood shed, horrendous acting by non pros, and a femme fatale with the most ridiculous hairstyle ever put on celluloid.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's fun to watch ham play a ham, Oct. 5 2001
Distraught over not winning the Actor of the year award, Richard Lionhart (Vincent Price) takes gruesome revenge on the theater critics who gave the award to someone else. With tongue placed firmly in cheek, this film zips along at a fast pace with a shocking yet well staged murder taking place every few minutes. Lionhart is a genius at planning the murders and its fun to see how he gets away with them. All of the murders adhere (or try to) scenes from Shakspears plays. My favorite is the one where the queen had to eat her children baked in a pie. It is sick, sick, sick but fun watching Lionhart kill one of the critics using this method. Price gets to ham it up and chew scenery every time he is on screen which is a delight to watch.
