5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, different - loved it!, May 9 2011
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Sims Medieval (DVD-ROM)
Sims Medieval is a great game. It is not an expansion pack but a stand alone Sims game. Meaning you don't get to continue playing with your character from your Sims 3 games. This game is a quest game, you start by creating your king/queen and then you pick quests in order to expand your kingdom. You play each quest with your king/queen and later on you can play a different character. All quests are different and a lot of fun. For example you may need to find a talking frog or you may have to unite your kingdom with an Elf kingdom with marriage. The quests remind me of Sims 3 World Adventures.

So you start off by playing the king/queen, but with each quest you get points to spend on building new structures (tavern, market) and most of these structures require a hero to run them. Most quests give you an option of selecting your hero, so you can switch from playing the king/queen to playing a knight or a wizard. Each hero has special abilities and lives in their own building and they also level up after each quest which makes them have more abilities.

Some key points of interest about the game:
- Unlike all other Sims games, here you can only see 3 walls, and you're looking inside the building through a 4th wall at all times, basically like a doll house
- You can only control your hero so even if your hero has kids, you can't control the kids or the spouse
- Your hero has only 2 needs: eat and sleep. Unlike Sims 3 games - Sims have 6 needs. For example, your Sim won't need to use the toilet or take a bath
- Your hero or his/her kids never grow old. For example, your hero has a child, the baby goes right to child (skipping toddler like in Sims 3) and stays as child until your hero does and then the child replaces the hero (like an heir to the throne). Also, your hero won't die of old age, but instead from an accident or being killed on purpose
- You'll have to do some reading - the entire game is based on you reading and making decisions - but it's a lot of fun and the humour is great
- You can only furnish the space, you cannot edit the building (not even put a wall in)

The above list has pros and cons: for example, the living space for all the Hero Sims are very small, so if you have a family, it's hard to put 3 beds in 1 room. Also, not having your Sim age and die is a bit boring, I personally would like to see the King being replaced by his eldest son - but there is a quest where your monarch is killed. But i found it great that the 4 needs are gone and you only have to worry about eating and sleeping - this gives you so much more time to do all the fun stuff. Also, because you can't control your family members, but just the one Hero Sim, you become more focused on the one character without having to worry if your child has done homework or if your sister took a bath.

All in all, I bought this game 3 days ago and I can't stop playing. I love it, love it, love it. I have every single expansion of Sims 2 and Sims 3 BUT this game is different, fresh and fun when compared to the others. You have a different routine here, a different way of life and gameplay. I recommend this to all Sims fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars And so the Final Chapter Begins!, April 19 2011
Albus Dumbledore is killed, and the wizarding community finally acknowledges the return of the Dark Lord. Voldemort is gathering an army and killing off all those who fight against him. But Harry has a plan - to find and destroy all Horcruxes which will make Voldemort a mortal and allow Harry a fair chance to defeat him once and for all. And so begins a quest - Harry, Ron and Hermoine set off together, keeping a low profile, looking for Horcruxes and hoping they'll have enough time to find them all. Meanwhile, the wizarding world is suffering casualties of war every day.

In this Harry Potter film, our 3 heroes have grown up and came a long way. The movie is darker, more serious, has more violence and even torture. All of this makes sense and goes very well with the book. However, right away i do not recommend this part for younger children. The movie reveals the struggles which all 3 main characters are facing: loneliness, jealousy, betrayal, friendship, courage. I believe all these themes come up the most in this part of Harry Potter series than in the rest. Some people will find this boring, tedious and stretched out. The big fans of Harry Potter will find this interesting and will fall even more in love with the main characters. I would describe this movie as a war movie - it is all struggle, fighting and surviving.

The blu-ray version is great - especially the special features. It is great to see and hear what Dan, Rupert and Emma have to say after acting in Harry Potter franchise for 10 years.

I am a big fan so i recommend this part of Harry Potter to all other fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing adventure in the Edge!, April 5 2011
The Immortals is book #10 in the Edge Chronicles. The story is about Nate Quarter, a teenage lamplighter. Nate is an orphan who travels to the city in search for a better life. Along the way, he meets all sorts of creatures and makes wonderful friends.

The book is bigger than all the other Edge books and holds a lot of exciting adventures. For fans of the Edge Chronicles, this will be a good last story which even touches on past characters. For people who never read the Edge Chronicles before, this will be a good introduction to the series. I would suggest however to read the other Edge books before reading this one since this book takes place years after all the other books.

For me, this book and the Edge series, are just amazing fantasy adventures. I would recommend these books for any age and any gender. They completely take you in, and submerge you into their world. The books also have drawings made by one of the authors and these pictures are just breath-taking, especially when a whole map of the place is drawn out with all the little details. For people who enjoy fantasy, this book contains all sorts of creatures, some with special powers and others just very unique characteristics. There is so much action and adventure that the reader never gets bored, and it's so easy to picture everything you're reading - the description of the places and characters is amazing. You fall in love with all the main characters, you can picture them in your head and you can hear their voice.

I can imagine the entire Edge Chronicles series would be an amazing hit with kids, especially thanks to all the great pictures. I've read all 10 Edge books, and i'm looking forward to re-visiting their world once again very, very soon. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Romantic Comedy, Mar 29 2011
This review is from: The Back-Up Plan (DVD)
Jennifer Lopez plays Zoey - a single attractive woman living in New York with a dream of having a baby. Having not met any special guys, she decides she cannot wait any longer and goes for artificial insemination. On the same day she meets Stan played by Alex O'Loughlin. The two begin to date and Zoey lets Stan in on her secret - that's she pregnant. Stan decides to stay with Zoey and try to make their relationship work. They go through some rough patches but in the end, love conquers all.

This is your typical romantic comedy - it's easy going, hilarious at times, touching and overall a good movie. I would put it in the same category as: While You Were Sleeping, Sweet Home Alabama, Wedding Planner, etc. Jennifer Lopez looks great and is a pleasure to watch and Alex O'Loughlin matches her perfectly. If you want an easy watch, a heartwarming romantic comedy, then you can't go wrong with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Ballerina's Struggle for Fame, Mar 25 2011
This review is from: Black Swan (DVD)
Natalie Portman plays Nina,a modern day ballerina who has been with a ballet company for a while. Swan Lake ballet is coming up and she is finally chosen for the lead role. Nina has a very close relationship with her mother, they live together and she knows everything that Nina does and naturally is very protective of her.

Once practice sessions begin, Nina is told that she dances the white swan perfectly, but the black swan needs extreme work on. In Swan Lake, the white swan represents purity and good; while the black swan represents evil. Nina has a sweet personality, she's pure and innocent so it is very difficult for her to embrace the black swan. Her teacher suggests she explores her sexuality - even when she dances with her male partners - he thinks that this will bring out the black swan. From here Nina starts to imagine things, some things are scary and some are insane. The pressure climbs and towards the end Nina loses her mind.

The movie was interesting, like most dance movies, it's about what it takes to become successful in this line of work. However, this movie is more supernatural due to the imagination of Nina's insanity. So it is more psychological than other dance movies out there. The acting was solid from everyone. The ballet itself, there wasn't much to look at - this movie won't show you the beautiful dancing or the choreography for example like in Step Up where you'll always see the awesome dance moves. I wouldn't watch this movie with kids or even teenagers. There's a lot of sexual scenes and even the insanity parts are not something that kids should see. I think that the movie could be misleading if the audience thinks they're going to watch a typical ballet movie and the struggle that comes with being a star. There's no lesson to be learned here and no happy ending - I guess this could be the reality of what a dancer would do to get their stage spot light.

The movie is dark and sad at times - I enjoyed it overall, but would not watch again. I would recommend this to people who like psychological movies and a bit of strange/weird/paranormal mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Formula = Eat+Pray+Love, Mar 24 2011
This review is from: Eat Pray Love Bilingual (DVD)
The movie is based on a book written by Elizabeth Gilbert and it's actually based on her real-life experience. Julia Roberts plays Liz - she has a wonderful house, a good husband and a career but one night she just falls apart realizing that she's empty and her fire for life has gone out. She divorces her husband, who is heart broken and decides to leave America and travel to her dream destinations to find the meaning of life and heal her soul.

First stop is Italy - where she enjoys the amazing food, learns the language and meets wonderful peopel with whom she becomes great friends. Next stop is India where she attends a spiritual program - here she learns to meditate and listen to her inner self. And last, she travels to Bali where she falls in love.

The movie is beautifully filmed, all 3 locations are just amazing to watch. The actors are so down to earth that it's a pleasure to watch all of them. I think people will feel a very deep connection to this movie if they're in a similar place in their lives. And I hope that this movie will be an inspiration to just take that leap, to drop everything and travel to your dream destination, life is too short and Liz did what a lot of people wouldn't be able to do. She faced her fears and did what her heart told her to do. The story was emotional and funny and very touching. Liz meets some great characters along the way and every one of them is memorable and different from the other. It was a pleasure to watch and I would watch it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Series and a Great Ending!, Jan 10 2011
In this finale, Rose is framed for murdering the Moroi Queen but of course no one will stand to see Rose fall for something she never did. With help from her friends and parents, Rose is broken out of jail and escapes with her ex-boyfriend Dimitry and an Alchemist. Rose's best friend Lissa, her boyfriend Christian and Rose's boyfriend Adrian stay at court in order to find out who trully murdered the Queen. The plan is for Rose to lay low until proof is found but Rose is not the type to stay put and soon a plan is formed to find Lissa's brother/sister. Dimitry made his feelings clear to Rose, that nothing can happen between them but as the book goes on, little clues are dropped here and there that the two still feel very strongly about each other. And apart from all that, the next ruler for the vampire world has to be decided and elections are under way. Will Rose stay with Adrian or will things work out between her and Dimitry? Will Rose find Lissa's lost sibling? Who will be the next ruler for the vampire world? You'll have to read to find out!

I'm trully amazed at how consisten the author remained through out the entire series. Usually the first book is the best and then things go downhill from there. Not here! Every book is great and the story is alway original in every one. Rose remains powerful and retains her great sense of humour. There isn't a dull moment in this last book, you can't keep yourself from putting it down. The passion between Rose and Dimitry is alone worth reading this for. Every character is so well written out that you can see them in your mind every time you read about them. The end of the book however could have held more answers, especially to some of the main characters. As a reader, you're still left in the dark about what exactly happend to some of those people... Rose does wonder but the answer is never given in the end. This might be just because it's not really relevant - the main story is after all about Rose but i still felt like i wanted to know.

The ending was amazing! I was honestly scared that this will be the kind of ending where someone important dies or something horrible happens. But it never did! Everything worked out fine. Amazing series, very well written and it's so different from the typical "Twiligh" type vampire novels out there. I just love how Rose is such a strong person, a young woman who knows how to fight better than most men. Her sense of humour pulls the book so well, every time she voiced her opinion or thought i had to laugh out loud. I'm re-reading the series now. Read all 6 books, you'll love them. A must read for all young adults who loved Twilight or any other vampire book!

5.0 out of 5 stars 24, Dec 16 2010
This last season of 24 is just as good as any other season. This time, the weapon that threatens America is a biological bomb. Jack comes back to CTU in the first episode, he's not forced into it but decides on his own. What was upsetting for me is his own daughter, Kim and Chloe - the 2 people that know what Jack has went throught he most, basically force him to get back into the game. He was about to move with his family (Kim, her husband and their little daughter) but now everyone is telling him to save America again. They know what he's been through but i guess for Jack this is his life and for everyone who really knows him they also know that this is what Jack was destined for.

The action is great, the twists and suprises are as good as ever. There's of course plenty of those jaw dropping moments when someone betrays someone else. Overall, this season follows the same recipe as all the other ones. It's exciting and predictable - you might end up sitting and just for fun guessing who the traitor in CTU is. The acting is superb, and the lady president does a great job at showing how smart and superior she is and how much she loves her America. Chloe as usual drives the comedy, her attitude is wonderful and her determination is even more so.

If you've been a long fan of 24 - this is of course a must see. You won't regret your money or your time, and you might even like this season more than the last few. The series 24 is a great show - it fits perfectly in the famous quote "edge of your seat" because every episode is like that. It's great for people who love suspense and twists in the story. Just when you think the bad guy is caught and nothing else exciting could happen, the producers throw you a nice wake up call and you're thrown back into the action. You never know who the good guys are and who the bad ones are. This show really creates the sense of loyalty, trust and friendship. These 3 factors are really hard to come buy for anyone in 24. Great tv-show, great actors and plots, and a great way to end it all! I look forward to re-watching some of these season again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Vampire Series! Must read for Twilight fans!, Dec 16 2010
This series is about vampires but the author took a new approach. Rose is the main female character, she's a dhampir - half vampire half human. She's a tough gal with bad boy attitude with awesome humour and great comments. She'll be the first in battle, protecting everyone and fighting until last breath. Her best friend is Lissa who is a moroi - a vampire, and Lissa is royalty. After graduation, all dhampirs are given assignments to body guard moroi for the rest of their life and Rose of course hopes to be assigned to Lissa. However, strigoi are bad vampires who drink blood and kill for it. Strigoi are what dhampirs protect moroi from. The first book starts off with Rose and Lisa having ran away from St.Vladimir's school and live on their own, until they are caught by St.Vladimir's guards and are brought back. Since Rose is so behind in school training, she's assigned a private tutor, Dimitry. He is older than her by maybe 5 years, he's strong, smart, brave and good looking with a Russian accent. All of moroi have special ability, for example some can master fire and use it as a weapon.

The plot in each books gets better and deeper, and each book is like a whole different story on it's own. It just gets better and better. Rose is an amazing main character. Most of other vampire books - the main female characters are all the same. But Rose knows what she's doing, what she wants and has a great positive, strong attitude. Her comments are hilarious. Each character is so vividly described, you can picture each and every one of them. The mood is very well set and all the action is described perfectly. There is no sappy and touchie feelings in these books, there's no "your eyes are pretty and i would die for you" every other page. That's the main reason i like them - and this is due to Rose's tough character. She's not girly girly and the books are written from her point of view, so it's great to read about this kind of character. Also, you're spared from the theme of a human finding out that someone is a vampire - that's been done so much lately - these books focus on the world of vampires and there are no such surprises. The author also writes about vampires only - so no werewolves or witches or fairies or any of that other stuff - which is also great because it gets a bit too much when authors throw everything supernatural into 400 pages. There's good action, good dialogue, interesting characters, love, friendship and sacrifice. Everything is balanced out and in between there is no boring thoughts to read for 5 pages on what the main character is thinking.

If you want something different but with a vampire theme to it, then this series is a must read, especially for any Twilight fan out there. I read all the books and am planning to re-read them very soon. This box set however contains all the books except for the very last one that just came out. So either buy this and the last book or wait until everything is put together for you. This would make a great gift for any teen who enjoys supernatural themes and vampires. Although, the books are written much better than most teen books and young adults or even adults would also enjoy them. Get them, read them, you'll love them and everything about them!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see - it's a keeper!, Dec 13 2010
This review is from: Despicable Me (DVD)
Gru is a criminal mastermind - he's not very evil but he is lonely and lives in a big house by himself with his little minions who help him with his projects. In order for his next evil plan to succeed, he needs to steal a weapon from his competition, Vector. Gru adopts 3 little girls and uses them to deliver cookies to Vector and then steals the weapon. While stealing the weapon, Gru becomes very attached to the girls and they to him - even though Gru is yet to realise just how much he loves them.

The story is original and very sweet. It's also very funny and at times the jokes are dark but the cuteness of it all smoothes things over. Each of the 3 little girls is very unique, funny and cute in her own way. The little yellow minions who work for Gru are hilarious - this movie was that much better due to them. Gru is also a very unique character - funny but sweet deep inside. I laughed so much and at times I shed a tear but this cartoon i think went to my top 3 list.

The genre, story and humour reminded me of these cartoons: Meet the Robinsons, Shrek and Up. If you liked all or any of those 3, you'll love this one even more. I've rented a copy but now it's on my Christmas wish list. Watch it, it's a great addition to your family library!
