5.0 out of 5 stars picky yuppies!, July 19 2004
This review is from: Set 2 Live Frogs (Audio CD)
yeah the songs are long!duh,it IS the animals album they're covering here, folks!I think that they did a fine job.you also gotta realize that with cover songs/albums either the group tries to get the song(s) as close to the originals as possible,or improvises them some.in this case the just did them the same as the originals-big deal!there doesn't ALWAYS have to be drastic innovations and changes in a cover song to make it different(les claypool does the vocals-how much more "different" can you get?)
anyhoo, don't let the rediculous bad reviews of this disc lead you astray cause it's awesome and truly a "must have" if you don't already own pink floyd's original version.(I was actually bout to get the floyd cd before I looked in the primus section @ the cd store and saw this!)p.s. it's better than the first frogs set by faaaar!

if you like this, you'll like cornbugs too.this would be the cd for people to start with because it's the most pop-oriented of the prax's-the tunes are catchy as hell!then get "metatrom"if you're impressed.I describe praxis and the other "funk-weirdo" projects as funk/ambient/hip-hop/dj/new age/metal(death+regular)/fusion/dub/comedy/and pretty much anything else a tripper could ask from santa for christmas!it's soul food in it's heartiest form.

5.0 out of 5 stars different from the others-and just as good!, July 15 2004
This review is from: Dreamatorium (Audio CD)
there are three dck cd's as far as I know;dreamatorium, disembodied, and tunnel(available only @ buckethead's website).disembodied and tunnel both are records that flow from song to song(each could be a single 50 minute track),but dreamatorium is the exception.the songs are all very ambient, but are distinctly different from one-another.my favorite track off of it has to be "maggot dream "because it's like somthing off"colma"only a tad bit more dark and brooding.if you have one dck cd,you need 'em all!

the only problem with the disc is that it's a little quiet and could use a good remastering.the only good thing about it is,well, everything.if you like most the work of praxis, buckethead, and the other weirder"new funk" projects this'll be right up your alley.(hell, get it for the many sound bits from the david cronenberg film"naked lunch"that appear throughout the entire album-if anything!)just beware when you hear"hey,we came here to see YOU bill!"-that's when buckethead says"I'm here!"as only he can!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars a good place for newbies to get a feel of the praxis',ect, July 15 2004
This review is from: Collection (Audio CD)
This cd really covers most of the highlights of praxis' decade-plus long existance.as with all "greatest hits" compilations, there are a few songs that've been mistakenly left out but after all it IS buckethead, laswell, boots, and company so most everything's good!I can honestly say that you'll probably end up buying all of 'em after hearing this.(and some of the songs they left out are TRIPPY!)so get this one and be prepared to "break the bank" collecting the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars oh,that Billy-boy!, July 15 2004
This review is from: Tala Matrix (Audio CD)
mr laswell has done many things, but this was quite a suprise!it consists of both chilled and upbeat tala(a middle eastern hand drum)drumming mixed with laz's trademark electronica that gradually fades in and out of the songs.it's a real trip-an-a-half for anyone not ignorant enough to dismiss it as "boring".

4.0 out of 5 stars better than "reinventing the steel", Jun 30 2004
it's not perfect but better than pantera's last record which felt forced.you could tell that dime&vinnie were'nt having the "underground" thing anymore, and wanted to do radio stuff that would make them $.I personally think THEY'll be long gone in 5-10 years, but if phil can stay off the needle he'll still be around cause he's "real"(or at the least more real than probably 90%of the frontmen from "heavy bands"today.)
get the sjr cd's if you like phil's hollas, enjoy punk with a touch of hardcore,or if you're into the nola music scene-it's good!

5.0 out of 5 stars tsk,tsk,miss kellock, Jun 22 2004
Karen is a probably a "trend meditator" as I call it-one who should strickly keep along the lines of "minimalist meditation music" ie:steve roach, robert rich, isaos, coyote oldman, philip glass, etc. And while I love all of those musical outfits the same as the mighty Ravi Shankar, you owe it to yourself(and yoursoul)to be open-minded to music that gives energy and joy to the young and old alike!(my friend's kids (3 and 6years old)go ballistic when they hear the fast parts, and fall alseep quite well to the mellow ones.so,anyways,if what meditation music means to you is buying the latest "pure moods" album or other worthy-but-a-bit-rediculous "chill-out"compilations,steer clear-the awesome majesty of Ravi Shankar may be well out of your mind's reach.that's too bad.but to the others that know the great music and appreciate the time and effort put forth(both spiritual and physical) to create such beautiful mindscapes-Ravi is the sitar superstar and most his discs are 10 bucks so you can really go nuts collecting his tunes!

5.0 out of 5 stars trippy music?double helpings,please!!!, Jun 22 2004
if you like interesting, technical "guitarish" sounding albums ala' buckethead, andreas segovia,g3,zakk wylde, etc.if you can appreciate truly great musicianship you will love this and all ravi's albums the same.(the one he did with philip glass is my favorite.)
