If I could ... 666 stars!, July 19 2003
Following THE EXORCIST, the devil seemed to be everywhere. Especially in children! THE OMEN has no ties to that production, but makes the perfect sequel! Where Linda Blair was just temporarily a vessel for a demon, here we have a small boy who may or may not be the son of the devil himself! THE OMEN originally relied on the mystery of whether or not this child was evil, or was it all irrational fears of parents who begin to realize their child is not quite the little angel they were hoping for. Richard Donner directs, and Jerry Goldsmith scored - making an unbeatable team to deliver a creepy mystery helmed by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Billie Whitelaw played Damien, and he captures innocent evil perfectly. It's a thinking person's horror movie! More goosebumps than outright screams, but perfectly crafted. The DVD features a stunning transfer, and an entertaining commentary by Donner and Stuart Baird. Documentaries round out the disc with pieces discussing Biblical references and a curse that seemed to surround the production with supernatural misfortunes. Also Jerry Goldsmith discusses one of his most effective scores! They don't make them like this anymore, and it's a shame. HALLOWEEN released 3 years later took the devil out of vogue and replaced him with knife wielding maniacs. But lately FINAL DESTINATION seems to have revived OMEN-style deaths where accidents take on a malevolent quality. But here is where it all began!

Stay awake for Dave!, July 19 2003
INSOMNIAC is probably one of the best travel shows produced! A blur of streets, bars, and clubs all across the country - it shows more of what you will see in a city if you head there. No exotic places, just real people doing there own thing late at night. All hosted by regular funny guy Dave Attell! He's a likable comedian that seems more like the guy next door. Here is REALITY TV finally! Well ... there is one notable production illusion. The show is shot over two nights and not one! But why fault it for that white lie? The DVD holds 5 episodes from the series. No notable extras are here except that no body parts are blurred and no language bleeped. It's not a whole season, and there is little insight into the show itself. But what could you offer? Maybe outtakes and bloopers! Commentary seems a little useless for a documentary show that is 100% commentary in itself. Behind the scenes could be nice. But I'll settle for no commercials and 5 strong episodes of one of my favorite shows!

Buy this NOW! It's limited and expensive anywhere else!, July 18 2003
SUPERGIRL was a worthy addition to the Superman franchise. Corny, warped sense of humor, and great flying effects - basically just like all the SUPERMAN films. But it's endearing! And to see Helen Slater take on the bad guys in a pre-Buffy feminist power move was wonderful. It's a fun movie, and even more fun as a special edition. You get two versions of the film, a commentary, and documentaries. Check out the foreign trailers for the movie as the German announcer shouts "ZZZZZUPERGIRL!" The commentary helps a lot, because it explains why the film was made the way it was and what they were going for. The movie itself is rare! I liked it a lot just because it was so gleefully silly. Everybody looks like they are having a great time biting down on the comic book material. You really can't go wrong! Faye Dunaway is a hoot and a half! And Helen Slater plays wide-eyed wonder to the hilt! And Brenda Vacarro is so FUNNY as Bianca. Grab a friend, giggle, and believe that a GIRL can fly!

Genital Origami to tickle your funny bone!, July 16 2003
Never has the male member been so funny! David Friend and Simon Morley are captured here on DVD doing what has made them famous - dick tricks. Sophmoric? Yes! Easy to do at home? Yes! But it is the two's easy-going matter of fact nature that makes this such a fun romp! You get better seats by watching the show in this format than if you made it into the theatre. The camera moves in very close, and the result is abstract and not pornographic in the slightest. It actually would be a family-friendly show except for the nudity. The guys do not use foul languange, and none of this is sexy - just silly. There is an innocent glee almost as if these adult men are still in junior high! It's a gigglefest.

Passion shines on DVD! And Sondheim!, July 15 2003
Grab this DVD now... I had the VHS, but the transfer for the DVD is well done. Plus you get a commentary track with Sondheim, James Lapine, and all three lead actors! It's a conversational track with a lot of information about the development of the show and how it was performed. And surprisingly, it's funny! The show itself is a rare musical that deals with the nature of love. Many say it is an acquired taste, but any fan of musicals should appreciate the show. It's beautiful - costumes, staging, and songs. It won several Tonys! You can't ask for a more enjoyable musical. Fans of Moulin Rouge will love the tragic ending! Take a chance!

Fun and Fluffy!, Jun 30 2003
Never has fighting crime looked so sexy! The old TV show gets an amped up big screen treatment, and the three leads are every bit as sexy and fun as the original 70s trio. The plot is straight out of the 70s too! The super-bit edition of the DVD omits the commentary by McG. Odd that they do that! It's good-natured fun and not much more. If you like action and comedy blended with physics defying martial arts you are in the right place.

Stylish, Sexy, and .... Silly! But still wonderful!, Jun 26 2003
Two words here should make anybody understand this movie - Zalman King. He was onboard for 9 1/2 Weeks, Red Shoe Diaries, and Wild Orchid. Love those flicks? This one's a winner too. Hate em? Steer clear and let the rest of us have some fun. Music is wonderful, camera work is outstanding, and the sex scenes increase in intensity throughout the film. The plot is simply a Southern pot-boiler about Sherilyn Fenn trying to chose between her vanilla fiancee and the ultra-hot carnival guy who makes her engines run (he looks like Michael Hutchence of INXS on steroids!). Throw in Louise Fletcher as a wise and iron-fisted grandmother who wants to see her make the "right" choice, and she'll kill anybody to make sure it happens! Also included are choice cameos by Kristy McNicol as a bi-sexual party girl, and Tattoo from Fantasy Island in his last role! It's a hot hoot! No special features here, but the DVD is a vast improvement over the video. Zalman King movies rely on visuals and music, so this is the only way to watch! Definitely worth the price of admission if you like your erotica served with sexy saxophones and white clothes everywhere! For some reason EVERY character in the movie wheres WHITE constantly. They must have spent most of the budget on bleach! Also watch for a pre-teen Milla Jovovich making an appearance as one of the little sisters. For [the money] you'll have a sensual blast!

Darker, Darkest!, Jun 26 2003
DONNIE DARKO got a very limited release in 2001 because it dealt with an airplane crashing. Not that the movie had any other connections to terrorist acts, but that was enough to stifle this well-made indie flick in its theatrical run. But the DVD brings it to life in a very full way, and with LOADS of extras. The story is twisting and would make David Lynch's head spin! Donnie is just your average all-American teen who sees big evil bunny rabbits on golf courses telling him about a coming apocalypse. He survives a plane engine hitting his house thanks to his visions. He may or may not be schizophrenic, or touched in a special way. He commits violent destructive crimes in his sleep, but they bring retribution somehow. And he may or may not be seeing destiny forming in front of his family - I mean this literally in a physical sense. Is he crazy? Is he a savior? Maybe both. The cast is SUPERB! Drew Barrymore who also produced, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wylie, Catharine Ross, and Beth Grant all make strong use of their characters. The movie is bursting with eccentric well-constructed characters from Donnie's family to his friends. There are no weak links here! And technically the movie is beautiful. Set in the mid 80s, the production design is dead on with just small touches here and there. The music is affecting! The camera work is sublime! Even the special effects work incredibly well given the budget. This is a labor of love for all involved and it shows. And the DVD is the same labor of love. Two commentaries, deleted scenes, trilers, easter eggs! You could spend days on this disc and never get tired. This is a no brainer! It's a must-have for anyone who loves movies.

Beyonce goes soul-o in a sexy 70s way!, Jun 26 2003
Beyonce shines through as a woman without her group around her, and surprise ... it's a retro-fitted hip hop affair with a lot of sensual laid back grooves. The first single "CRAZY IN LOVE" is the most uptempo sampling a 70s groove from "Are you my Woman". That is followed by "NAUGHTY GIRL" which Beyonce uses a hook from "Love to Love You Baby" by Donna Summer. We all knew she has a reverence for the 70s, but most surprising are the Middle Eastern influences found in both NAUGHTY GIRL and BABY BOY. Belly dancers rejoice! The second half of the album slows down, but never to a ballad speed. Low funky beats keep the entire album afloat, and rap stars like Jay Z, Missy Elliot, Sean Paul, and Sleepy Brown color almost every other song. It's ghetto fabulous from the cover photo (diamonds and jeans) to the spoken "BEYONCE INTERLUDE" where she coos into the mic about love. Will she tromp Kelly Roland's solo album numbers in sales? Maybe. But each member of Destiny's Child has proven they can stand on their own. And have their own identity musically. Beyonce has emerged as the sexy 70s cool hip hop girlfriend. Suddenly you realize Foxy Cleopatra would love this CD!

D'OH! Someone quoted the Bible!, Jun 18 2003
Seems like the Religious Right runs around criticizing pop culture for corrupting our youth and minds. So it's nice to see an author take THE SIMPSONS and find it moral and uplifting. All it takes is one viewing of HOMER VS LISA AND THE 8TH COMMANDMENT to reach that conclusion! Fans of the show knew this! Most critics do not watch enough to know that THE SIMPSONS have larger than life hearts, and a morality that shines through any misadventures. This is an extremely well-written book. It's light and funny, but it makes you think. Kinda like THE SIMPSONS. Pinsky has done his homework, and he cites SIMPSONS episodes from Season One until last year. He also tackles some sticky theological issues in a way that will make the layman understand clearly. Whether you are a Christian or a SIMPSONS fan (or like me - both!) you will find something in here to quote again and again. Nice work, and I look forward to other books in the series which include taking on the theology of Disney and The Lord of the Rings.
