3.0 out of 5 stars Effective, flexible cooling, May 29 2012

The Haier portable air conditioner is easy to set up and effectively cools a 850 sq. ft. apartment. The only downside is it's operation is rather noisy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Berlin in the '20s, Sept. 8 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"City of Shadows" is not part of Ariana Franklin's "Mistress of the Art of Death" series.

This is a book about Berlin in the 1920s.

It is a mystery but it is also a portrait of a place and time; Berlin itself becomes as much a character as Esther Solomonova and the rest of the Berliners in the book.

The book starts rather slowly but the characters develop well into people you care about - you want to rush through it to reach the conclusion of the mystery, but you also want to read it slowly to enjoy the development of the characters and the descriptions of a terrible but fascinating time in Germany. You understand why ordinary Germans could vote for Hitler, even as you shiver for what you know is coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Mystery, Aug. 31 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Part of Ariana Franklin's "Mistress of the Art of Death" series.
They quickly got over our heroine being a medieval forensic scientist - this is not CIS:Middle Ages.
However, they are good mysteries with appealing, and sometimes appalling, characters that keep you involved and give a picture of 12th century England that certainly feels real, however accurate it really is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perils of Pauline, Aug. 31 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
These books are a fast and fun read; but after a while they get a big repetitious and you get the feeling that they are just padded out to keep the series going.
I'd like some resolution, as well as revolution.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deck building, Aug. 11 2010

This is a hands-on how-to-build-your-deck book.
A few nice pictures of decks, but more focused on the details of construction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Garden Design, Aug. 11 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a collection of short articles on planning, furnishing and planting your garden, with many illustrations.

It is not really a "how to" book guiding you through the process of establishing a new garden or renovating an existing one, but gives you lots of food for thought while yo consider what you want to do.

Winona Zelenka has a very different take on Bach's Cello Suites from Yo-Yo Ma, but the sound is just as gorgeous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written historical mystery, Aug. 11 2010

The Shardlake series is set in the time of Henry VIII and starts with "Dissolution".

Tudor times are violent and uncertain - papist or reformer you could be burned if you do not read the political winds correctly.

Shardlake is a lawyer who was coerced into working for Thomas Cromwell, it made him wealthy but heartsick and determined to never again be involved in affairs of state.

In this book, Cromwell has fallen but Shardlake's services are still in demand - from people you do not say "no" to.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the two best kitchen design guides we used, Feb. 18 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Sunset kitchen design guide is clear and well organized. Generally comparable to the Better Homes and Gardens guide, I found the BH&G one slightly more useful but the free Punch design software included with the Sunset guide is a definite plus if you do not already have something similar.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice format, pity about the content, Feb. 18 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This kitchen planner has a well thought out format - ring bound, tabbed sections - and lots of pretty pictures. However, the content is inferior to the other guides we used.
