5.0 out of 5 stars gotta love your mom...., March 11 2002
easily considered the greatest film of almodovar's career and i am in absolute agreement. all about my mother has it all from plenty of almodovar outrageousness which we've come to love and an unforgettable touching story. cecilia roth gives a sweet and convincing story a woman who's son was killed in a car accident. after losing her only son, she sets off to find his father whom evidently has never been in the picture. along the way, she meets the most outrageous but certainly lovable characters one could ever have hoped to meet. we meet two lesbians actresses, a transvestite model, and a young pregnant nun all of whom are in need of help in one way or another. what unfolds throughout the film is glorious, tragic, and always engaging. mr.almodovar makes several references to classic films like all about eve as well as tenessee williams' famous play a streetcar named desire. easily pedro almodovar's most compelling film and i can't recommend this film enough. just see it !!! you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars don't dream it.... be it !!!!!!!, March 11 2002
how many campy cult classics do you know of which reigned supreme at the midnite cinema for nearly a decade or longer? here is a perfect example of a musical which has never left our heads and seems to do well with each new generation. probability suggests that rocky horror picture show will never go out of style and purchasing this dvd is the next best thing to seeing in in your local theatre on halloween night. HAVING BOUGHT SEVERAL ROCKY HORROR VIDEO TAPES THROUGH THE YEARS, none of the vhs tapes look nearly as good as this what with all the extras you are getting here and few had the deleted scenes many of us have been after for ages. if you are going to purchase rocky horror, this is the collector's dream come true. for those of us who haven't had the experience, you obviously don't know what you've been missing through the years. tim curry gave the performance of his career as the mad dr.frank-n-furter from the planet transylvania who has discovered the spark of life. in the early portion of the film, we find a young couple out for a bit of evening fun who end up stranded in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire. with nowhere to go and desperately trying to get out of the rain, they find themselves in a nearby castle surrounded by transylvanians weirdos. i won't bother telling you the rest because you really do need to see it for yourself to believe it but i say you are in for a real treat. rocky horror is without doubt the greatest sci-fi horror spoof ever masquerading as a musical and certainly the most beloved film of it's kind. don't dream it.... be it !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars great place for you to start..., March 11 2002
This review is from: Like I Said (Audio CD)
ani difranco is still one of america's most underrated and important artists alive today. ms.difranco happens to be one of the few artists i know who is indeed a self-made pop star. here is one of lesser known albums which i sat down to digest recently and i'm glad to say it's a new member of my cd family. like i said just happens to be a great place to start for all those interested in ani whereas five years ago i probably would've told you to try not a pretty girl or dilate perhaps. this cd is basically a compilation of her first two albums and i've read or been told that these are actually remixes of the originals though i'm not for certain. ms.difranco has a lovely voice which doesn't sound forced but yet is undeniably powerful. on this cd, we find an intoxicating and stimulating hearing experience of spoken poetry over acoustic guitars alongside beautiful balads which stay in your head for nearly days. i'm singing both hands as i'm writing this review. be sure and check this one out real soon. happy listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars these kittens have claws......, March 9 2002
This review is from: Oracle (Audio CD)
here is one of the finest examples today that women in metal can rock & have been sadly overlooked due to the male domination in the music industry. what you should find just as interesting here is that our kittens are around the same age as britney spears. oracle is the sophomore follow-up to spit for those not paying close enuff attention. it's evident here these girls have indeed sharpened their claws to actually dig into the listening public once again. morgan lander has an almost ethereal voice which gives oracle a goth feel so to speak. oracle however is a death metal cd 90% of the time or more so don't let the ethereal voice comment fool you. there is quite a bit of growling in the vocals & probability suggests serious hardcore metal fans will delight here. some of the best tracks include safe, in winter, & the clever pink floyd cover run like hell. this is one oracle you don't want to miss. pick up your copy today!

2.0 out of 5 stars not what i was hoping for..., March 5 2002
This review is from: True Stories (DVD)
i've always been a fan of talking heads and have tried to follow up on david byrne through the years. for some strange reason, i never saw this film when it was playing in the theatres and i am just now seeing it for the first time on dvd. while true stories certainly did have some humorous moments and there are some great ones here, the film never really rises to our expectations of either a great campy musical and/ or good comedy. after the film is over, you almost feel as though you've wasted a full 90 minutes which you can't ever get back. the music here recorded by david byrne and talking heads ofcourse is great and certainly collectible but i would recommend renting this dvd before purchasing a copy for the personal library. i'm sure i will not get too many helpful votes on this one as it appears the film has garnered some very positive reviews thus far but i simply thought the film silly and pretentious at best. john goodman gives an acceptable performance as a single man who's greatest hope in life is to be happily married but none of the actors here offer us oscar caliber performances. you are better off seeing the other vehicle for david byrne called stop making sense if you like the talking heads.

5.0 out of 5 stars very overlooked film..., March 5 2002
This review is from: Star 80 (Full Screen) (DVD)
who could forget the tragic tale of dorothy stratten? to date, this film has never really received the full recognition that it deserves and i'm not exactly sure why. whereas many films love to cash in on great tragedies in hopes of making a big buck, i believe mr.fosse wanted to us to see how ms.stratten's death should effect us all and how unneccesary obsessions often turn violent in the end. the film has a steady pace, great script, and virtually flawless performances by everyone here. eric roberts nearly blew me away with his tense and dramatic presence. mr.roberts is another prime example of an actor overlooked by the academy awards. having not seen much of ms. hemingway's work, i have to admit i'm converted and will be seeking more of her films although probability suggests this was one of her greatest roles ever. at such a reasonable price, there is no reason not to own a copy of star 80 in your dvd library. you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars great ensemble cast, March 5 2002
This review is from: The Big Chill (Bilingual) (DVD)
the big chill was perhaps the biggest surprise film of the early eighties & today people look back on this milestone achievement with great respect. having not seen the film in ages, i decided to purchase the dvd & revisit some old friends whom weren't really that well known when this film first made it's appearance on the big screen. overall, i felt really great when the film was over but i felt they could've played with this theme a bit more & big chill would've been fantastic. no BIG complaints overall but i don't feel i really got an idea of who alex was & what kind of a life he lived. the other characters were rather well-developed so i guess it would have been nice to see a flashblack or two showing us alex's interraction with the college buddies. having said that, i love all the characters here and can see why this film remains popular to this very day. i enjoyed the deleted scenes on the dvd but they don't really make or break the film either way. what i found more fascinating is the documentary on the bonus material which shows many interviews with the cast members, screenwriters, and director. very insightful and well-done !!! if you are going to add the big chill to your collection, DVD is the obviouS choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars wildly imaginative and extremely effective, March 5 2002
This review is from: Magnolia (Widescreen) (DVD)
mr. anderson is one of the finest directors of our time & magnolia is another jewel in his gold crown. in a time where nothing is what it seems and everything remains a complete mystery, the film magnolia couldn't be anymore necessary. given the transformational nature of the film industry, this should be the age of aquarius for recognizing excellent independent cinema boasting major hollywood talent. mr. anderson has weaved together a unique tapestry of people's lives which you can't help but care about when you realize how similiar our lives actually are to these fictional ones on the screen. magnolia's timeless themes to name a few might be loneliness, sympathy, and perhaps even occasional guilt here and there. universal themes make this masterpiece totally unforgettable. i should also mention the ending almost seems biblical and will not give away anymore details here. you are just going to have to see this for yourself. although this may be only small potatoes at best in comparison to the great gifts magnolia has already in store for us, aimee mann boasts some terrific new songs here which could provide hours of listening pleasure while driving to work or cleaning up your house. if you are interested in great modern cinema, look no further than the works of mr. anderson. he is the future of modern cinema. MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU MR. ANDERSON FOR BOTH BOOGIE NIGHTS AND MAGNOLIA !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars good film overall, March 5 2002
This review is from: Caligula [Import] (DVD)
as far as how politically correct this grand epic may be in depicting roman decadance, i completely lose points on that. but then again, most of us here who have seen or will see the film probably could care less about how historically accurate this film was. do i like caligula as a film? indeed, i think it's one of the most handsome historical films i've seen in quite a long time. while definately not for all tastes as caligula can easily be construed as graphic, i strongly believe this film is very well done and deserving much more credit than it's received. when discussing the violent content of this film, i found it no more appalling than any conan films or the majority of medieval films which have been made. what i would really like to know though is how on earth the oscars could ever overlook the flawless performance from malcolm mcdowell as the lunatic ruler of rome? would i consider this film pornographic? i believe there are scenes which are equivalent to or rival those of any classic porno films of the seventies but it should be blatantly obvious that this film is not a porno flick. for those who are wondering just how much was restored for the unedited version, we have a grand total of 45 minutes here not shown in the r-rated version which also offers here and i don't recommend purchasing that one by any means. please note however that the majority of the hardcore scenes are not shown with major actors such as peter o'toole, malcom mcdowell, or sir john geilgud. here we have amazing costumes, sets, and again great performances by all with the exception of the character claudius. just exactly who told this man he could act and how did he wind up in this film? in many ways, this film reminded me of another great tragedy made in recent years called titus. while maybe not as visually stunning, caligula's great performances can easily be compared to those in titus and/ or gladiator. for those skeptical viewers out there, try renting this one first before investing twenty some odd bucks into it.

4.0 out of 5 stars how could you go wrong with jack and jessica?, March 5 2002
ok, this one actually is deserving closer to three and a half stars but there is no option for half stars on amazon unfortunately. the film actually is not bad but how could you go wrong with jack and jessica, right? naturally, the performances are strong and they hold this mixed bag together like superglue. in fact, i think this is easily one of jessica lange's greatest and most overlooked performances to date. the depression era i think is depicted well here but the film is not flawless by any standards. for starters, the film is extremely slow and many viewers will probably not have the patience to watch this one until the end. secondly, i don't find postman erotic as most of the scnes looked forced or mechanical. aside from that, the story is good but would've been nearly perfect if they could've shortened it by thirty or forty minutes. for a more erotic thriller with a steady pace, you might try basic instinct.
