Censorship warning!!!, April 11 2011
The only reason for me to want this soundtrack was the credits track, "Baby I Love You" by The Yayhoos. It has a hilarious chorus that contains coarse language. Rather than it playing as heard in theatres and on DVD, the soundtrack album has the "f" word coarsely cut out, completely ruining the joke. What were they thinking? Who is this protection for, exactly? Someone who's offended by the song (someone who shouldn't bother with a movie like this in the first place, one would think) when it was in the movie is not likely to seek out the soundtrack, hm?? What a dumb decision.

Caught this on TV by chance..., Sep 5 2009
I had no knowledge of this film prior to accidentally finding it on television. I had just finished watching 'Religulous' with my wife and my brother, and it just happened to end as this film's first 10min closed. I think we initially started watching this because I thought I could guess the film's title. Often I can, even without having seen the film previously. Here, though, I was wrong. This film completely slipped my radar somehow. I'm glad I caught it though. What a ride!! It really makes you wonder what goes on behind closed doors in quiet, rural communities. It could be ANYTHING, right? This film shows that quite well, I think. I'd like to take a moment to address some of the negative reviews in here. The ones I've read lead me to believe that the persons complaining either don't like violent thrillers, or Jennifer Tilly's performances. No one claiming surprise at the rough content or the stars of the film should be paid any attention. If you missed and/or ignored the trailers, tv commercials, the poster, the VHS/DVD cover, the rating, the warnings next to the rating... like come on. You got what you ordered/rented/paid for. Did it LOOK like a happy-trails kind of film? Really? Jeesh.

"Original Master Recording" --- ? Explain, please., Sep 11 2008
Is there something different with this edition, being that it's the "Original Master Recording"? I of course own the regular CD release already; was remastering done or something? Or was it the opposite (i.e. is this a more spare, less studio-tooled version?) INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. P.S. There is a release of Megadeth's 'Countdown To Extinction' which bears the same "Original Master Recording" moniker - hence my reason for asking, since this looks the same.

Supposed to be a "fun" horror movie, but it's just lame., Mar 1 2008
The humour falls *almost* completely flat -- I did enjoy the one goth kid who was all decked out in his best "look I'm spooky - and deep" goth kid gear. The horror is non-existent. More thrills are found in a Rob Zombie music video than this POS film. If you think the rehashed-for-laughs shenanigans of 'Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn' made it *better* than 'Evil Dead', then you might enjoy this, too. Those of us expecting anything resembling a good story should probably dope themselves heavily first, or stay away.

Even more of an insult to the fans than the actual show was!!, Aug 13 2007
My wife enjoys this immensely, but as others have posted, my wife's set also has episodes which are prone to buggy playback issues and/or freezing. The bit I read about Amazon reps claiming that "older" DVD players are to blame is BS; it's just the kind of thing one says when we don't know what the real reason is - it's the DVD support equivalent to a doctor saying "It's just a virus". And I should know because I am a call centre Quality Monitor and hear reps doing it all the time... This is a faulty product, or at the very least, had a bad batch. If it were the DVD player, would other discs play fine? Would it screw up on the same episode(s) each time? No, and no. There are also no good extras to speak of; hello, documentary? retrospective? interviews? behind-the-scenes footage? Anything?? I mean, is this or is this not intended to be a "Collector's Giftset"? You'd think that would inspire someone somewhere to include features which are worth watching. Instead, HBO seems satisfied making lame "extras" which amuse for half a minute and never get viewed again - all for the sake of saying that there are extras - credit where it's due, there's a commentary somewhere, but not for each episode (which is normal for TV series on DVD btw) But my wife is so happy to have all the shows that she won't let me send it back - she barely trusts internet shopping as it is, lol.

If you don't dig this film, you weren't meant to, July 14 2007
Like many a genre fan who grew up in the eighties, I find that this is the ultimate tribute to kids who love monster movies. It's got a great blend of scary (but not TOO scary) scenes, hilarious humour, campy set pieces and eighties children's fashion :) As far as criticisms, one could always pick on the script. It lacks depth, has a couple (just a couple) of one-liners that'll make you groan and there are some missed opportunities for real character development and insight - the kind of thing which draws people into multiple viewings because they can get something new out of the story every few years. But if you're looking for a real horror flick that you can watch w/your pre-teens, this could be the gem you're jonesing for.

One of the first albums I purchased, ever., April 6 2007
Nostalgia may play a part in it, but I have strong fond memories of this album. I concur w/the second reviewer here, in that this is guitar-driven rock and nothing more, nothing less. It isn't art-rock, political rock or even particularly deep lyrically. It is, however a bloody GREAT album to drive fast with. I recommend it for anyone looking for something to remind them of the good ol' days of hair metal in the mid-to-late 80s. And to those NOT looking for that, be warned -- you may find yourself liking it anyway!

... a very promising re-release!, Sep 2 2006
No need to review the film itself, of course, so I'm only going to mention how stoked I am for this "Ultimate 2-Disc Edition" DVD release. A high-definition transfer, supervised by Synapse Films' Don May Jr.? Sold - I'm there. In case you don't have this already, there are some things I think I should point out, judging by some comments by previous reviewers... Yes, the "intro" of the film, read by a young John Larroquette, perports that the film is based upon true events. Some will tell you it's "based on Ed Gein", but a quick little Google of that name will show you that tales of Ed Gein were the inspiration point for the film, not its basis. You may have also heard how depraved, sick and difficult to watch this film is - all true, but also false. The film is virtually devoid of any onscreen blood, there is no sexual content and there is hardly a curse word to be found. The careful and manipulative editing, the frantic pacing and the unflinching views into the characters' emotions will make you feel otherwise though. You might come away from it believing you've seen/heard more than you have. That is the genius of this film. Oh yeah - I said I wasn't going to review the film, didn't I? Oh well... couldn't help it, I guess ;)

I'll put the same amount of effort into my review..., April 30 2006
This review is essentially a copy of my review for the "Parabola" DVD... I've seen the video, back in 2001 when it was floating around the internet after its few appearances on MTV and MuchMusic. I already had a VHS recording of this and the video for Parabola, thanks to a cable-TV-endowed friend. Just what the hell is this DVD supposed to offer me?? I mean, gee whiz Tool, thanks for the re-release of your video (no 5.1 to be found, I see... *shakes head) with another "commentary track" by your smart-assed, uninformative weed hook-up, Jello Biafra. At first, I thought the simul-cast dual-commentary idea (there's one playing out the left channel, another out the right, at the same time) was an innovative and amusing concept... if this disc's commentary is anything like the Parabola disc, then I'm glad I haven't wasted my money on another P.O.S. pre-album filler release. Advice? Send a message and just don't buy it. This release, as well as the equally barren "Parabol[a]" DVD and the minimal, out-of-print-but-I-don't-care DVD/VHS "Salival" will serve as a warning sign (perhaps intentional some say, but to what end?) that not everything with Tool's name on it should be assumed to be in the same league as their albums, which are genious. My apologies to the band if they had little or no involvement in the production of these frisbees. I fell for the Parabola one, but you won't see me picking up "Schism". I wouldn't advise anyone else to, either.

Over 2 hrs of minimum wage labour for THIS???, April 30 2006
Thumbs way down for this release... I've seen the video, back in 2001 when it was floating around the internet after its few appearances on MTV and MuchMusic. I already had a VHS recording of this and the video for Schism, thanks to a cable-TV-endowed friend. Just what the hell is this DVD supposed to offer me?? I mean, gee whiz Tool, thanks for the re-release of your video with a thoroughly annoying "commentary track" by your smart-assed, uninformative weed hook-up, Jello Biafra. At first, I thought the simul-cast dual-commentary (there's one playing out the left channel, another out the right, at the same time) was an innovative and amusing concept. After bemusedly listening to the left, I thought "Okay, he's had his fun and given a little tidbit or two at the same time." But I was getting pretty annoyed by the time (about half-way through listening the right) I realized that: ___ a) Jello had NO intention of being truly informative about the video, beyond some musings on the meaning of some of the imagery, and an affirmation that he in fact had no prepared response to the video. ___ b) The commentary was pieced/edited together from scraps of speech that are sometimes exactly the same, actually overlapping around 3mins in, before progressing to further annoy me again with all-new inanities. As if that weren't bad enough, we get a 10mins plus (I turned it off) droning sound that is somehow supposed to pass for a "remix" of the song. I've read that some are disappointed to find that the track is not easily ripped from the disc for play on a computer or iPod. My response to that is simply, "Why would you?". And, to top it all off, there are no menu titles and we are forced to watch the (cool) intro animation every time we want to select another useless "feature". My advice? Just watch the video (the default flame icon on the menu) and eject the disc, likely never to watch it again. OR... take my BEST advice, which is to send a message and just don't buy it. This release, as well as the equally barren "Schism" DVD and the out-of-print-but-I-don't-care "Salival" DVD/VHS will serve as a warning sign (perhaps intentional some say, but to what end?) that not everything with Tool's name on it should be assumed to be in the same league as their albums, which are genious. My apologies to the band if they had little or no involvement in the production of this frisbee. Oh well, at least I'm one disc closer to being able to make a disco ball from CD shards.
