The Dirty Girls Social Club: A Novel
The Dirty Girls Social Club: A Novel

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, Nov 14 2003
I very much enjoyed "The Dirty Girls Social Club". I just happened to pick up this book at a book fair a while back and was instantly pulled into the lives of the "sucias". Each sucia tells parts of her life (and her friend's lives) from her own perspective. The sucias became friends while attending college in Boston. Every couple of months they meet up and catch up with each other's lives. The lives of Lauren, Usnavys, Sara, Rebecca, and Amber are all very interesting. Their lives are full of sorrow, pride, success, shame, joy, independence, and love - all the things that make a good read. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the character Amber. I found myself getting very bored with her chapters and skipping over them to read more about the other sucias. Either her character wasn't as developed as the others, or she just wasn't very interesting.

Overall, I would suggest this book to anyone who would like a light, easy read about 5 very different women who share the common bond of friendship.

I really had no interest in "Wrong Turn" when it came out because I thought it was just another movie about stupid teenagers who get hunted down and killed in the woods. Well, I was exactly right. The only different thing that I wasn't expecting is that the teenagers are hunted by inbred killers in the woods and mountains of West Virginia. While this premise is far from original, it is the mutant inbreds who make the film.

In the opening credits, the audience gets bombarded with images of missing people as well as news articles about mutation. We never quite understand if these mutation articles have anything to do with the killers in the film or if they were just used as a foundation for what we were about to see.

In the film, a group of teenagers and a doctor get into a wreck and must find help in the desolate woods. They split up, of course, and then people start dying at the hands of the cannibalistic killers. Overall, the story isn't that great, but there is a lot of gore and plenty of gross-out moments throughout.

Eliza Dushku, once again, plays the "tough chick" in the film. It seems as though she's becoming typecast. It would be nice to see her in a different role.

"Wrong Turn" is an okay film. I wouldn't suggest it, mainly because there are many other films with this storyline that are much better. However, fans of this genre might want to check it out and compare.

Now I understand why the critics did not think much of this film when it was released. "Half Past Dead" basically tells the story of the "new Alcatraz" in which one of the prisoners, who hides a secret worth millions, is going to be executed. Seems like a pretty decent storyline until the action starts happening. Morris Chestnut's and Nia Peeple's characters hold the prison hostage (as well as some very important figures there to witness the execution) hoping to get the very valuable secret out of the prisoner. Steven Seagal plays an undercover FBI agent who must fix the situation promptly with his bad acting a guns. Ja Rule makes an appearance as a prisoner as well as Seagal's unaware best friend. Ja basically gets thrown around the entire movie and his trying to look and be as hard as possible becomes very annoying early on in the film.

I personally wouldn't recommend this film since there are so many other good action films out there, but I'm sure action buffs will probably enjoy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars DeNiro Never Lets Us Down!!!, Oct 15 2003
Ce commentaire est de: Casino (Widescreen) (DVD)
Casino is an excellent film about the rise and fall of an empire in the gambling haven, Las Vegas.

Robert DeNiro plays Sam "Ace" Rothstein, a cunning and smart business man who gets into the casino business. He is given a casino to run, mostly because of his reputation for always winning, by the mob who get their cuts of the money one way or the other (i.e. lying, stealing, murdering, etc.). Joe Pesci stars as Ace's best friend Nicky Santoro who is sent to Las Vegas to protect him. Nicky has a tendency to be a ruthless and merciless person, so he eventually gets into a lot of trouble, making it harder and harder for Ace to stand by him. Sharon Stone stars as Ginger, a hustler, call-girl, and junkie who Ace falls in love with and persuades to marry and have a child with him. She agrees, not because she loves him but because she sees the money, jewels, cars, and houses all awaiting her.

Soon things start to go wrong. Ginger comes inbetween Ace and Nicky and the Tangiers casino is investigated by the FBI. All the while Ace tries to keep everything as legitimate as possible because he's a smart business man who's made a lot of money in Vegas. He doesn't want his success (and his reputation) to be ruined.

Even though this film lasts three hours, it did not seem that long. This film held my interest the entire time and had me wondering what was going to happen next. There are some rather brutal and violent scenes in the film - I actually had to cover my eyes a few times because the scenes became too graphic - but that is expected in this type of mobster film.

I would definitely suggest this film to anyone whether you like mob films or not. This is one to see. Mr. Robert DeNiro always come through and gives a stellar performance!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Had It's Moments, Oct 8 2003
"Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood" is a funny spoof of all the inner city "hood" films of the 90s. Shawn and Marlon Wayans star in the film as Ashtray and Loc Dog. Ashtray has just returned to the "hood" in order to live with his father and become a "man". We soon find out that Ashtray is actually a couple years older than his father - I'm still confused about that.

Overall the film spoofs just about every "hood" film of the 90s from Boys 'N the Hood to Poetic Justice. It does have its funny moments that will really have you laughing, but then there are times when it seems like the Wayans brothers are trying a little too hard to get laughs (e.g. the grandmother who swears, smokes weed, and gets in fights for the fun of it gets old after a while). I would suggest this film if you're in the mood for a spoof comedy.

"Scarface" is an incredible film about the rise and fall of a Cuban refugee in Miami, FL in the early 1980s.

This film revolves around Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who came to this country when Fidel Castro expelled many of this citizens (and criminals) to the United States in 1980. Tony and his friends soon discover the world of cocaine and begin selling it. Tony builds an empire out of this business and eventually becomes a very powerful man. However, all of the power soon comes to an end when a hit is placed on him. The climactic scene at the end (containing the now famous line, "say hello to my little friend!" will leave you in awe!

Al Pacino gives what I believe is an Oscar-worthy performance as Tony Montana, while the very young Michelle Pfeiffer portrays his cocaine-addicted wife. The film can quite violent at times and very strong language is used often, so you might want to put the kids to bed before watching this one.

The second disc containing all of the special features is a gem within itself. It contains deleted scenes, how the film came to fruition, and a short documentary about how "Scarface" has influenced many of the hip-hop artists today.

Overall, I would give this film and its special features 10 stars. Even though Tony chose to go into the business of cocaine, it shows how a person coming from virtually nothing can become one of the most power people in the country if his or her drive is strong enough. Like the movie says, "The world is yours!" I would highly recommend this film to anyone with a DVD player. It's a film that I think everyone should see at least once in their lives, whether you're into gangster films or not. You will not be disappointed at all!!! Watch this film!!!!!

"Bulletproof Monk" is an okay film about a Tibetan Monk's quest to keep a valuable scroll, which contains script giving its holder the gift of time - he or she will never age while the scroll is in possession. While protecting the scroll, he comes across a thief who, through time, fulfills three important prophocies. These three prophecies will let the monk know that he can now pass the scroll onto the next person to protect. All the while there is a villain (a guy who looks like a blonde Hitler) who is trying to steal the scroll so that he can become young and take over the world. The monk and the villain had a run-in sixty years ago and now he's out for revenge.

Chow Yun-Fat and Seann William Scott do good jobs as the monk with no name and Kar. Jaime King makes an appearance as Kar's love interest, but her performance is filled with looks into the camera either trying to come off as a bad a** or sexy. I couldn't tell which. Almost all of her screen time consists of her looking into the camera and at the other characters with her chin down looking up at them. It was weird and I couldn't understand why kept doing it. I think they could have gotten a much better actress for the part. King did a better, and more realistic, acting performance in "Pearl Harbor".

Overall, this film is okay. I would suggest it if you're in the mood for some special effects and a lot of fighting.

Flowers In The Attic

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!, Sep 29 2003
I was first introduced to "Flowers in the Attic" through the 1987 film starring Kristy Swanson. Now, these many years later I have finally read the book. I started out of order, reading "Garden of Shadows" the last book in the series, but prequel to "Flowers in the Attic" first. I have to say that this book is very good! You will be glued to the book from start to finish.

The story revolves around the Dollanganger family. One evening Christopher Dollanganger dies in a car crash and his family, consisting of his wife and four children, must go back and live with their family in Foxworth Hall. Both Christopher and his wife, Corrine, grew up in this mansion. It is because of their incestuous marriage that they were both banished from their home and their family.

Wanting to recapture her father's adoration and love, Corrine comes home and hides her children, so that she may inherit his vast fortune. She asks her mother to watch over the children, who are confined to the North wing of the house. They are not allowed to leave this area and can only go up into the attic. Soon their mother pretty much abandons them and leaves them to rot in the attic while she lives her life without them. Their evil grandmother does everything in her power to make them feel as bad, horrible, and dirty as possible, wanting to punish them for what their parents had done nearly 20 years prior. Soon the children discover that they are slowly being poisoned and why they are trying to be killed.

This book is an excellent tale of deceit, love, hate, pain, and triumph. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! You won't be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, Sep 29 2003
My boyfriend and I rented this film mainly because of the cover. Neither of us had seen the first "Bloody Murder", but we figured that it wasn't necessary. What we got was a very predictable and almost laughable attempt at a horror movie. From what I've read in reviews about the first movie, this one is supposed to be much, much better. That's amazing to me because this one was terrible. The acting is absolutely horrible and the plot is very predictable. I and my boyfriend were able to figure out who the killer was a quarter of the way into the film. Don't get me wrong, if you're in the mood for one of those stereotypical slasher films, then this is perfect. There is gore and the obligatory nudity - everything that people have grown to love in these types of film.

Overall, I would only suggest this movie if you're having a party or if you're in the mood for a good laugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Ever Expected, Sep 29 2003
"Minority Report" is a gripping drama about preventing murder before it happens. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a police captain who works for the "Precrime" division of the police department in Washingto D.C. in the year 2054. Because of the Precrime experiment/department, there has not been one murder in D.C. in six years. Three humans who are kept in liquid called "precogs" have visions of crimes that are about to happen. Anderton and his collegues then use that information to prevent murders all over the city. This procedure seems foolproof until Anderton realizes that he is next in line to murder someone. The tables turn.

"Minority Report" is a futuristic film that doesn't bore you with a lot of scientific jargon or far-fetched ideas. The thought of murders being prevented alone draws you into this film. Steven Spielberg does an excellent job of showing a futuristic Washington D.C. without it looking fake and silly. The story will also keep you glued. There is the obvious story of the precrime division, a backstory regarding Anderton's son who was kidnapped and has been missing for the past 6 years, and the story of Anderton trying to figure out why he is going to kill someone he has never met. Believe me, this movie will keep you glued to the screen!

I would highly recommend this film. Not only is is visually interesting, but the story and performances are incredible!
