Price: CDN$ 24.54

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent "hacks" book., Jun 2 2004
By looking at the home page, one might assume Amazon.com is a simple site for such a large portal. Search for the book, put it in your shopping cart, and buy it.

But there's actually a lot more to Amazon, which you can see by reading this book. Many small timesaving (or just plain fun) features and tips have been added to this excellent title.

Amazon Associates in particular will love this book because of the extensive coverage of both Associates, linking to Amazon, and Amazon Web Services. But it's also nice for average users who want to know more about the coolest features of Amazon.

A must for any Associate, and a good read for anyone else.

Content Syndication with RSS
Content Syndication with RSS
de Ben Hammersley

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the few titles on RSS. And it's good, too!, Jun 2 2004
This book really is a must-have (or must-read-once) for anyone interested in RSS syndication technology.

It contains a lot of information on creating RSS feeds and related scripts. Most of the non-RSS code is in Perl, so if you don't use Perl, some of the book might not be handy.

I was disappointed that the book didn't cover much of the user's end of syndication... things like scraping and RSS readers themselves, but that's obviously another book.

This is a really nice title if you're interested in the techie side of RSS, but if you're an end user, there won't be too much here for you aside from the bits of history.

Underground Frequency Guide: A Directory of Unusual, Illegal, and Covert Radio Communications
Underground Frequency Guide: A Directory of Unusual, Illegal, and Covert Radio Communications

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, but getting a bit outdated., Jun 1 2004
Are you tired of listening to the BBC and Voice of America on your shortwave receiver? Do you want to hear something new and exciting? Than this book is for you.

Written during the peak of unusual radio communications, The Underground Frequency Guide covers "numbers stations" that intelligence agencies may use to communicate with agents, international diplomatic traffic, Air Force One's phone calls, and bootleg radio users... everyone from fishermen to guerilla military forces.

Oh, and did I mention that it's 100% legal to tune in in the United States?

The only problem with this book is that it has become just a bit outdated. Frequencies change on occasion, and some stations mentioned have been silenced, gone encryped, disappeared, or switched frequencies.

This book is a good background read, but don't expect all the infromation to remain accurate. For more recent information you can check websites like spynumbers.com.

Macworld Mac Secrets
Macworld Mac Secrets
de David Pogue
Édition : Paperback
Price: CDN$ 27.71
Availability: Usually ships in 3 to 5 weeks

3.0 out of 5 stars The best in the Mac community, but outdated now., Jun 1 2004
This book, like almost everything else by the insanely great David Pogue, is an extremely handy Macintosh book. As someone who does some part-time Mac repair and support, it's handy to have on hand. Not only does it go over the important things you'll need to know, it's also chock full of easter eggs and other fun hints.

However, the last major edition release was in 2001, and this book has become extremely outdated now that Mac OS X is the primary Mac OS. If you're looking for a good book on your Mac OS X computer, I'd recommend "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual" by the same author. "Mac OS X Hints", edited by David Pogue, is also a good book.

If you're a Mac fan, this book is still perfect for you. But if you're an OS X user who couldn't care less about OS 8 & 9, older Macs, or tips for old software, then buy some of the author's newer titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good album if you like their type of music., Jun 1 2004
I'm a newcomer to Christian music... I mainly listen to mainstream, but I recently purchased the new VeggieTales VeggieRocks album of VeggieTales covers, and I've been trying out some of the bands I've heard on that album.

The Newsboys' cover of In The Belly Of The Whale was particularly good, so when I saw one of their albums cheap at a used CD store, I was quick to purchase it.

I really liked this album, even though it's not particularly my kind of music. These songs edge more toward being pop music than rock... but it's nothing like bubblegum. It's really good pop/rock music.

It also has nice lyrics... they're not preachy and boring, but they're both really good religious and really good in general lyrics in general. I love "WHEN THE TOAST HAS BURNED / AND ALL THE MILK HAS TURNED / AND CAPTAIN CRUNCH IS WAVING FAREWELL / WHEN THE BIG ONE FINDS YOU / MAY THIS SONG REMIND YOU / THAT THEY DON'T SERVE BREAKFAST IN HELL!"

All in all, a nice album. Some of the best tracks include title track Take Me To Your Leader, Breakfast, It's All Who You Know, and God Is Not A Secret.

Dave Barry's Greatest Hits
Dave Barry's Greatest Hits
de Dave Barry
Édition : Mass Market Paperback
Price: CDN$ 9.99
Availability: Usually ships in 3 to 5 weeks

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarous but Dated, Jun 1 2004
As one other reviewer commented, Dave Barry is the funniest man on earth, who writes the funniest books on earth.

This book, a collection of some of his earlier columns for the Miami Herald, is no exception to this rule. It covers his usual odd topics including traffic, homebrew beer, politics, and... weasels. You really have to read it to understand the book, but I'll say that it's really funny.

The only problem (and the reason it's lacking one star) is that some of his humor is based on current events and politics, and while it's still hilarious, some of these works (from the early 90s) are becoming outdated.

Otherwise, a great read, especially if you can find it for cheap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best of the new TMBG., May 14 2004
Around their Mink Car album TMBG began to do songs with the Elegant Too, which had more of a techno/electronic/rap sound. But it's good techno/electronic/rap, which is no longer an oxymoron thanks to They Might Be Giants.

The best songs on this CD are "Am I Awake" with its rock/techno beat and the slightly jazz-like "Memo To Human Resources."

Following quickly after are the unclassifiable "Au Contraire", the longtime fan favorite "Ant", and Their decent cover of the Beach Boys' "Caroline, No."

This album is a must for any TMBG fan, but it's not their best yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very funny weasel book, May 14 2004
"Weasel is a funny word. You can improve the humor value of almost any situation by injecting a weasel into it."

This book by Dave Weasel... er... Barry is an extremely funny read. It's a collection of his newspaper columns that will have you laughing over and over again, and annoying your family members with your constant quotations.

He covers almost every topic here, from exploding animals to traffic cops to reader suggestions to doctors to drug dealers to television. It's all here.

This may not be his best book, but it's really funny and a must-have for any Dave Barry weasel. Er... fan.

The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications
The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications
de American Radio Relay League
Édition : Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any serious ham operator, May 14 2004
This book, published by the Amateur Radio Relay Lague, is a must-have item for any serious amateur radio operator.

Any question you might have about RF, antennas, tuners, amplifiers, and so on are in this book.

I would recommend this book to any ham who's interested in working HF or building antennas. It's not really necessary for most new hams who are planning on working two meters for awhile since most of the information doesn't really apply to working 144MHz on a handheld.

Otherwise, pick up a copy. I wouldn't buy one every year since the technology doesn't change that much, but support the League and get a great book by buying this item.

If you're not a Boy Scout, it's a handy book to have around. Any time you need to know a good knot or hitch, advice on hiking, camping, or outdoor cooking, or the best first aid instruction, you can find it in this book.
