good book, July 26 2003
it's quite useful on getting you started on shell programming. As always you'll end up using the man pages to find out various other options and what not. It definitely gets you started on the right track it is NOT a "bible", however. After the book gets you going you can just continue on using man pages and other online help though.

great book, July 26 2003
I have the 2nd edition of this book so I'm going to assume the 4th is only better. Deitel and Deitel are wonderful authors, I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn C++.

incredible, July 26 2003
The only bad thing I can say about this book is it is a bit outdated. I however would not recommend ANY book over this one. It's THE book for learning the tcp/ip protocol suite. I think I've read this book at least 3 times and I'm probably due in for a 4th time. I rank this as my favorite computer book. So really I give it 10 stars out of 5 ;)

I would not recommend this book. It is certainly NOT for a beginning programmer. It assumes C programming knowledge which surprised me while reading. I found the book useful but if you are a beginner at programming find another book. Most of the examples also failed to function correctly but their content could get you going on the right steps.

not that impressed, Jun 6 2003
This an acceptable book, it does assume previous programming experience and more specifically C programming experience. The examples are rather pathetic and they don't spend really anytime explaining the examples, they just suddenly appear out of no where. I wouldn't know what book to recommend but I wouldn't recommend this book for most people. I think where the examples went wrong is they went off into some huge programming example instead of using a short example to demonstrate the current topic. Large sourcecode programming projects I think are better left for the back of the book or for the authors websites.
