4.0 out of 5 stars Bound to be infamous, July 21 2013
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
God of War:Ascension is a good game but not a great game. As a very big fan of Kratos' killing spree it is a bit sad.

This game has a decent story that fits into the canon. The magical attacks look good and are actually extremely fun to use in tight spots. When Kratos gains each of his powers his heavy combos end with an attack that can generate other attacks, which is extremely fun. For example, combos ending with a heavy attack with Ares' Fire equipped will cause an explosion at the end that will make smaller enemies fly or larger enemies stunned momentarily. The game, as usual, has a very polished, cinematic presentation. The multiplayer is an extremely good game and in my opinion is a separate game altogether.

God of War:Ascension has some flaws, and unfortunately they're big flaws. All of the God of War games (except perhaps that mobile abomination) have always had combo fluidity. What this means is that as you upgrade your weapons you unlock several new moves which would work seamlessly with each other. Evade and parry were always perfect. They tweaked this here so that some moves are now locked until you fill your rage meter. Now, rewarding players for not getting hit is not a bad idea. Castlevania: The Lords of Shadow, did it correctly. So did Ninja Gaiden. But they've ended up compromising attack fluidity in this game. If you get hit, your rage meter takes a hit or worse gets wiped out. So you'll end up spamming your basic moves, which isn't a great feeling. Note that it is hard not to get hit because some enemies are just quick, which means you'll end up parrying. Parrying too long drains the rage meter too. The next problem is in the parry itself. They've tweaked it so that just pressing L1 doesn't work. Your previous move has to end properly and the parry itself is a bit delayed. Guess what happens when an enemy takes you from behind during a move with another in front? So, the gameplay has been compromised, which makes this game not so fun as the others in the series.

The game also has some bugs. Make sure you knock down the pillar in Village of Kirra section before entering the puzzle room with the huge rolling cylinder. If you don't you'll have to start the chapter anew.

The Trial of Archimedes is an extremely hard section that is a bit unfair and will test you patience, but I found it enjoyable. I completed the game the Normal and hard difficulties (I forgot the names of the difficulty levels). The highest difficulty level was a bit too much for me, given the above mentioned gameplay problems.

All in all, the game is a decent hack and slash game but it has some flaws which unfortunately make it a tedious affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different in a good way..., July 24 2011
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
In today's gaming market, making a game for one of the most overcrowded game genres takes guts but doing it in a completely different direction is next to suicidal. Coming out of it unscathed and glorious is just out of this world. This is exactly what Gearbox has done.

This game is unlike any other shooter out there. It has a somewhat decent storyline but what is epic about it is the sheer size of the maps and the breadth of weapons it offers. The number and types of weapons is just humongous. Every one of them is different and its just fun to try out every weapon at least once.

The visuals are great and the missions are fun. The story is passable but, as you will realize once you start playing, is not the center-piece of this game. This game is simply about running around and finding the best loot possible and having a great time shooting stuff while doing it. You will not be bored!

The music is alright and nothing to go gaga over. The setting of this game is almost steampunk-like if it wasn't for those robots called claptraps running around. The game does become a little repetitive but hey at least it doesn't end in 6 hours flat (I'm looking at you CoD).

This is a game that is actually worth the money. Thirty bucks for the GoY Edition is a no brainer. The only thing I don't like is the game cover but that's me.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overrated but nevertheless awesome, April 23 2011
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game was overrated and hyped way too much from the beginning. The problem is that when a game is hyped too much it tends to disappoint players in the end. In any case, if you can ignore all the noise and voice surrounding this game, then in actuality the game is pretty good. Just don't expect the game to be a genre changer like God of War or Uncharted 2 were for their genres.

The game has truly amazing visuals and you cannot ask for more in terms of audio/music. Personally I like cut scenes that are pre-rendered rather than on the go cut scenes. It has now been 3 years since MGS4 was released and I just cannot figure out why EA and the others can't still get face rendering right.

In any case, the gameplay is quite good, very good shooting and overall good Physics. There are some bugs (may be intentional - not sure) where dead enemies kind of freeze in the position they fell but that's just a minor annoyance. The centerpiece and the masterpiece of this game is the suit that the protagonist is wearing. It just gives you so many gameplay options. Let me explain. I use the Cloak mode so often and I use the sniper more than it should be used but that is fun for me. And in my concentration and by the way that I play, I always thought that was the only way to play some of the levels/sections but I was wrong. A friend of mine came over and started the game and guess what - he is always in the middle of the action, bullets and grenades flying around, and he always uses the Armor mode and that seems fun as well. Overall, the suit just adds a lot of fun that you can't have in any other FPS.

The storyline is sub-par and nothing to write home about.

Overall, I do recommend this game as it is actually extremely fun to play. But if you read reviews from game sites and such I must warn you that your expectation could be too high. Just experience the game as it is and it will be worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aspirations aside, not a bad game, Nov. 9 2010
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Dante's Inferno is a game that aspires to be the cross platform 'God of War' but that it misses the mark, as so many others before it, is quite evident from the start. The boys at Sony Santa Monica must have had a big laugh.

Don't take me wrong, this game is not bad by any stretch of the imagination. It is just that there are so many similarities in gameplay and visuals that there is a big chance that you may feel cheated if you have ever played the God of War series.

The visuals are quite good and is at the upper end of the this generation of games. Although the developers are 100% justified in making the visuals as they are (since you are literally travelling through hell), a bit more colour would have been better. The only colours I remember when I think about this game are red, yellow and orange, in other words blood, fire and rock. Cut scenes are pre-rendered and could have used a bit more polishing as the transition between gameplay and cutscenes can be quite sudden and sometimes ugly.

The gameplay is what would be expected from a hack and slash game although I must say that a Scythe does not exactly make a spectacular weapon. There is a kind of secondary attack called the cross attack which is a type of ranged attack. As you progress further through the game you will find yourself cheating the game's difficulty level because these cross attacks get stronger while you can stay at a safe distance and finish off enemies. The gameplay could have been polished a bit further but is alright as it is. The music is decent but not memorable and certainly not epic.

The game starts in an epic manner but then descends into this mess with no real motivation in terms of storyline. The developers have taken video game nudity and mature rating to a whole new level that cannot be explained here. The are very few types of enemies and most of them look the same except for some subtle differences in their attack patterns. You will be taking on these guys again and again throughout the game which would feel a bit repetitive.

If you love hack 'n slash games then this game will not disappoint you as it is a pretty decent slasher with good visuals. But do not expect a God of War or Ninja Gaiden and do not expect a great story that would keep you engaged throughout the entirety of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buckets and buckets of blood....., July 7 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I will keep this short. If you enjoy hack and slash games and you have a PS3, this game must be bought. The game is very good, very mature (Aphrodite is the hottest game chick I've ever seen) and very very bloody. The level of detail is awesome as well, as can be expected of Sony Santa Monica. The game looks very good on HD (I played at 720p) and audio as always is quite good. The way the story continues is a bit so-so, but maybe that is because we already know that Zeus is toast and Kratos is a killing machine. If anyone is a bit disappointed with this game it's because they've been spoilt by God of War I and II.

All in all this game is very much worth your money and I highly recommend it.

If you don't know anything about the series I recommend buying the God Of War collection first and play through it. It is worth every dollar.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best arcade racers in a while, July 7 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is absolutely fun to play. The game looks gorgeous and plays very very good. Using the powerplay is a lot of fun, especially when you perform something truly atrocious like breaking a dam or bridge to wreck opponents. Online play is very good too. The only minor complaint I have is that while the music is awesome, it gets tired after a while. Also different tracks around the same location makes them look the same. But those are small things. I really recommend this game...

4.0 out of 5 stars Lunatics Unite!!!, Jan. 24 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The second installment of the popular Motorstorm is a great game. It looks better and has many more maps than its predecessor. Visuals are very good and the included music is awesome. Online gameplay is very very addictive. However, this game is not for everyone. Anyone who played the first motorstorm would know that. Both Motorstorm and Motorstorm : Pacific Rift are kind of cult games among some PS3 owners - me included. Not everyone likes them. But those who do absolutely love them. Thats because the game needs the player to be precise in movements and the maps were designed to be harsh if the player made mistakes. However, the game is not too punishing and is balanced quite well. By the time the player has reached festival rank 5, he/she is good to go online and online is were the action is.

Highly recommended for off-road racing aficionados.

This game is epic. Finally somebody made a game that can challenge the Metal Gear Solid saga in story-telling. This game has it all - story, characters that can make you feel all emotions, gameplay, music and visuals. Although gameplay cannot be called flawless, it is near perfect which is good enough for me. In a time when big studios spew out crap in the name of games Naughty Dog has made an absolute masterpiece.

If you have a PS3 and you do not own this game - you are missing out. Highly recommended.

This game is simply fantastic. For anyone who's been following this series I don't think they need a review to tell them MGS is always good. But for those new to the series - get it. Read the original game stories from MGS 1, 2 and 3 in Wikipedia and start the game - you will love it. This game is epic. Highly recommended.

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Ok. I take back what I said in my Midnight Club review. This game sucks. The cars are good and the races are fine too. What is bad is the story which is kind of annoying and the open world. The open world and the environment belong on a PS2 game - not a PS3. I think Blackbox just used whatever they had from Most Wanted and made this game and it shows. Plus bugs - this game has so many bugs that I lost count. Not recommended.
