wonderful book!, Nov. 5 2008
"One" is a story that teaches children how to stand up for themselves and others when they come up against people who try to intimidate them ("bullies"), and that it just takes one person to make a difference.
Without giving preconceived ideas about what these "bullies" might look like, the author instead uses colors and numbers to illustrate her point. Although the ending is a bit ideal with the "bully" deciding to accept the invitation by the others to be their friend (which would be wonderful if that was always the outcome!), it does give kids the idea that you can help make a difference in other people's lives.
My 5 yr old son is just starting to have to be introduced to this whole subject, and he loves the clever use of colors, numbers and feelings that are depicted. A wonderful introduction in how to deal with others who try to make you feel bad about yourself, and how to even help them feel better about themselves!
