5.0 out of 5 stars Fellini, De Sica, ... who cares., July 12 2004
This review is from: C'eravamo tanto amati (DVD)
I opened this DVD with some trepidation, because of all the controversy surrounding its original release. To my relief, the full theatrical version was there, uninterrupted and without cuts. The print quality is good enough, better than the one I saw recently at Vittorio Gassman retrospect. The controls are not particularly versatile, for example, I couldn't change the choice of subtitles during the play, but regardless of the flaws, we should be grateful to those, who made this wonderful film available to us. There is nothing like it!

1.0 out of 5 stars It is not a parody!, July 4 2004
Possibly the most idiotic film of the past 30 years. The only redeeming moment is when Randy Quaid tells about being abducted by aliens. But even there, we already guess that he will not survive to the end of the film. After all, who is a better candidate to sacrifice himself, than some wretched drunk and misfit. Utterly dispensable.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a comedy., July 4 2004
Neglected masterpiece, misunderstood and unappreciated by far too many. It is not perfect, perhaps could benefit from some extra production time, but the film's incredible inventiveness, brilliantly wacky humor and fantastic sets, more than compensate for its shortcomings. Great, brutal fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars best modern don giovanni, April 9 2004

This is a superb recording, in every way. The singers are excellent, in top form, and completely immersed in their roles. The voices are highly individual, in perfect balance with each other and the orchestra. The sound is warm, spacious and clear, with every detail present. However, the top honors should go to Haitink. Under his baton, the marvelous orchestra unfolds the drama with great sensitivity, precision and strength. Despite the relaxed tempi there is not a moment of slack. The whole performance carries sense of unity, rarely matched in other recordings. This set is at the very top of the huge Don Giovanni discography, together with Bohm's German version on RCA, Furtwangler's Salzburg 1953 (newly remastered on M&A), and few others.

This review replaces the one that seconded criticism of the last two scenes as being out of place and contrary to the narrative flow. That was my sentiment after viewing the film in the theater, when it first came out in 2001. However, recently I saw it again, this time on DVD, and to my great amazement discovered the true last scene. It was a short "cartoonish" version of Seymour's convenience store fight, but with a different outcome, that popped out few seconds after the final credits. I don't know if that scene was a part of the theatrical release, since by the time it should have appeared on the screen I already left the hall, as most other viewers did, but the scene does bring an unusual twist resulting in a more effective ending, especially when connected with a momentous expression on the face of Seymour's therapist as she closes the door behind him and his mother. The "new" ending was so unexpected, that I first thought something was wrong with the DVD. Anyway, in light of the above discovery, I must retract my prior little disapproval and give back one star I took away because of it. This film is a true gem, remarkable in its originality and warmth. Just don't rush for an exit or turn off your player when the final credits start rolling.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, Nov. 17 2001
"How would you react if I told you I was an antichrist?" - mocks David the prospective roommate during one of the fun interviews in the beginning of the movie. Well, what do you know? A little further into the plot and that question doesn't sound so comical anymore.
This film is not a simple betrayal and greed story, but rather deep exploration of the darker side of human nature, terrifying journey into the anti-world where love becomes hate, generosity turns into greed, friendship into betrayal, and even light comes from beneath.
Thus, it is no accident that Alex, who places less emphasis on moral issues than his roommates, is least affected by that transformation, and I would argue that his initial motive for replacing the contents of the suitcase was just a practical joke. And David's reason for taking control of the money and his later attempt to have it all is not really greed, but rather some warped sense of justice, the revenge on his former friends for pushing him into the abyss of inhumanity. And Juliet, also, can not escape destruction, although she realizes it at a later stage. Then, she does want the money badly, as the only possible compensation for the lost soul.
I saw this film first time few years ago on late night TV, starting about one-fifth into the feature, missing the title and credits. The story, the atmosphere, the detachment and subtle irony of the presentation, which made it even more powerful, its momentum and unflagging rhythm, the acting, - it was like a kick in the head. Next morning, I was calling my friends, describing the plot and asking for the title, until someone gave me the answer. "What an amazing film!" - my reply was.
Five stars are not enough to rate this film's virtues. IMHO, it is one of the greatest achievements in the history of cinema, a must for a serious viewer. "Black comedy"? Give me a break!

2.0 out of 5 stars Someone with such a condition should not be walking free, Sept. 7 2001
I saw this movie in the theater, and in a few hours completely forgot about it, until month later when visiting the same theater suddenly recognized it among the playing features.
Perhaps the film had so powerful an effect that it caused in me a condition similar to one protagonist had, at least in relation to the contents of the movie itself. Or may be it was lack of emotional depth, unrelated shallow characters and complete absence of purpose that left me nothing to remember. I tend to believe it was the latter.
Two stars for unusual setup.
