1.0 out of 5 stars Dumb and pretentious, May 31 2004
No wonder the Japanese people hate this movie. It's not only the stereotypes (most of the Japanese characters were faceless or ugly, and in general violent and, hmm, stereotyped). It's also the pretentious way of fitting an Oriental philosophy in a Westerner's world. I'm not against meshing the best of different worlds. I'm just saying the novel and the movie are purely made to make money, and there's nothing philosophical or endearing about the story or the main character. Of course, it has to end with the white man taking the Asian woman as his bride. No wonder the Japanese hate this movie.

The company is now defunct and the technology, too. The toy is no longer sold or supported.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years, April 13 2004
This review is from: Sony PlayStation 2 (Video Game)
All of a sudden, over the course of the last year or so, it's become fashionable to trash the PS2. Sony is partly to blame here, for not coming out with the successor sooner. (Where's the next version, Sony?) And the PS2 cannot match either the Xbox or the Gamecube in terms of processing prowess.
But alas, we buy game consoles not to look at the best computer-generated breasts or aliens, but to have fun, to escape our otherwise totally boring and unworthy life. And in this PS2 shines, because it boasts a huge library of titles that cover every genre of video gaming.. and some you'd never thought existed. Compared to the Xbox, the PS2 also exhibits very good reliability: whereas my Xbox went dead after a little over a year, my PS2 is still working fine after almost 3 years. PS2 games are also cheaper than for the other consoles.
If you are new to gaming, the PS2 is the best place to start because, like Windows PCs, you have so many choices when it comes to software and also accessories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven performance, April 13 2004
The biggest flaw to this movie is the uneven performance put up by Anderson. She is great in the first half an hour, but her performance degenerates into pity (much like the character she plays) and unconvincing for the rest of the film. Aykroyd just looks and acts ridiculous as the married seducer, probably the worst cast role in the film. For some reason I never developed a full sympathy for Lily Bart. It could have been a great film, but the rather theatrical direction leave the film cold.

3.0 out of 5 stars Undelivered, April 13 2004
This review is from: Lady Jane (Bilingual) (DVD)
While Helena Carter is terrific in her role as Lady Jane (Queen Jane for 9 days), the movie as a whole falls short because it doesn't present the sequence of events convincingly. The build-up to Lady Jane's crowning moment is rather lame and a little confusing, and the nine days of her "reign" are not documented well. There's also too much of a love story, with her persistence in her faith more like a sideshow or afterthought. Overall it's still an enjoyable experience, if it does frustrate the viewer a little.

1.0 out of 5 stars Without special effects, this is nothing, April 12 2004
The acting is simply laughable. The set design is quite amateurish. The computer-generated special effects are simply silly and unconvincing. Plus, this is almost four hours of utter ennui. People seem to enjoy this only because other people seem to enjoy this. To give this an Oscar once again shows that Hollywood is a total self-flattering piece of joke.

Market Neutral Investing: Long / Short Hedge Fund Strategies
Market Neutral Investing: Long / Short Hedge Fund Strategies

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best source for informatin, March 29 2004
Nicholas runs a hedge fund consulting company and a lot of what he writes is not industry standard but rather what he thinks should be industry standard. There's a lot of different definitions in the HF industry on what long/short equity really means. Nicholas won't tell you what other authorities think. So this is a book with a very narrow focus, but even in this area it fails to clearly identify the risks of these equity hedge funds. You have to keep in mind that this guy is a promoter of the HF industry, so he's not an unbiased analyst of what hedge funds can do and cannot do. He's here to "sell" hedge funds... and to sell his company's services. I do not recommend this book because it's not objective at all.

Franchising For Dummies
Franchising For Dummies
by Dave Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars A good helping hand, March 10 2004
Despite my initial misgivings about a franchising book written by the late founder of Wendy's, I have come to like the book a lot, because it gives you exactly the information you need to (1) consider whether franchising is right for you, and (2) get started becoming a franchisee.
The book starts with a general discussion of what franchising is and what the different types and varieties are, then proceeds to discuss the most important topic of the entire book (and your decision-making process): is becoming a franchisee right for you. An entire chapter is devoted to this topic and it's an open and honest discussion with a focus on what *you* want out of franchising. After you decide yes, it's right for you, it's time to get your hands dirty, and the book gives you a lot of information on every aspect of establishing a franchise and running it. Luckily, the authors do not promote Wendy's blatantly, although there's little information on their hamburger franchising competitors.
I first read a library copy of this book but it was good enough for me so I bought my own copy. I'm considering joining the franchising army, even though the compenstation doesn't seem attractive esp. in the first few years. Maybe in 5 years I'll come back to this page and report my experience. :)
This book was published in 2000 but the information (except statistics cited) is quite up-to-date.

Complete Idiot Guide Making Millions Net
Complete Idiot Guide Making Millions Net
by Rod Underhill
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, but could be helpful to the complete idiots, March 9 2004
You gotta remember that this book was written in 2000, right around the time the dotcom bubble burst. Of course you didn't have to be amazon or ebay to survive the bloodbath, as many small independent shopping sites have been doing quite well.
This book doesn't tell you how to come up with a good idea -- I doubt anyone can really tell you, since successful entrepreneurship is seeded totally on individual creativity. (Disclosure: I myself am still trying to come up with the mother of all "how come I didn't think of that" ideas.) It's more about how to set up an e-commerce site, but the information is already outdated now that four years have passed. Still, it could be an informative read if you are truly clueless about e-commerce.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy the book and make him even richer, March 8 2004
Calling this book "boastful" ( official review) is an understatement. This is total self-flattering and self-grandization. This is not a help book that can show you insider secrets to getting rich (if they exist in form at all), nor is it a half-respectable autobiography. Written back in 1989, at the height of his previous career, this book simply tells you that Donald Trump is the modern-day J.C. Some of the accounts of his personal life are nauseating. If you love the Donald like he was your b/f from a previous life, get this book. For all others, avoid as there's no useful information here and its sold purpose was and is to get the Donald even richer.
