3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but fell short, June 29 2004
But I'm a Cheerleader, was entertaining however it had a low buget feel and fell short of it's comedic ability. The story had a lot going for it and the talent was there to be had. Ritchard Mull, who played Bull in the T.V. sitcom Night court, plays a militant gay who is trying to undo the damage this True Directions facility is doing. Clea DuVall did a great job as a angry lesbian and the rest of the cast did a good job. I noticed many chances to get a comic jab but they passed without a laugh. I feel this is good enough to add to a Gay themed collection but not a top ten pick. I had high hopes but felt a bit let down. Rent it if you can and make your own call if you want to buy or buy a used copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too heavy and a good bit of romance, June 22 2004
Broadway Damage was a fun and enjoyable film. It was not too heavy and not overly light, a good date movie. Not a lot of sexual stuff and no nudity. The acting was good and the story was cute. I would not put it on my top ten list but it is better than a great many of the indipendant gay themed films I have seen. I would say it is a good addition to the gay themed movie collection and a good investment. The best romantic comady todate is "Trick" with a simular story but done very well. This film is good for mixed groups and remains fairly nondiscript.

3.0 out of 5 stars Realistic, Funny and eye opening., May 11 2004
This review is from: ALL THE RAGE [Import] (DVD)
The manner that this film is presented is semi-movie, semi-documentry and works in this format. The story of a motivated, good looking, successful, professional gay man who is looking for perfection in others. It is a fairly factual depiction of one type of gay man that may be found in most cities. The acting was good and the story kept my attention. The production quality was good as was the audio quality. The film was enjoyable for the humor and it had some heavy scenes filled with lifes drama. It had a fair amount of semi-nudity however was rather mild sexually speaking. This is not a feel good movie nor will it be considered sensual however it is worth renting first, to see if you like it enough to add to your collection. Not a bad investment but not great either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Facinating and strange, May 11 2004
The production quality both audio and video was good. The script was facinating and truely sad. This was not a feel good movie and in fact will leave you angry. Teena Brandon was a self destructive, confused young lady that wanted to be accepted and loved however she could not accept herself. The story is about how she lived and the situation that leads to her death. It was actually very well acted and I was impressed with the finished product. This is a quality addition to any collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars More reality than we would like to admit., May 11 2004
This review is from: Leaving Metropolis [Import] (DVD)
I enjoyed the film " Leaving Metropolis" for many reasons. The acting was good and it had a good script. It was a bit raw and had an edge however it was believable and struck me as situations that some of my friends from the past would get themselves into. The production quality was good and so was the audio quality. The Artist "David" has painters block and takes a job as a waiter to try to get unblocked. He gets a romantic notion towards his married employer "Matt", Who appears to like the idea of getting together with David. David is unethical in his behavior, but that makes the story facinating to watch. The film is funny at times and also has it's fair share of drama. It had some very suggestive scenes however they fit the situation. It was a good addition to my collection and a good investment. The situations shown in the film are good for heated debate if you like that sort of thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tender and enjoyable story, April 28 2004
This was a good film with good production quality. The acting was solid and heart felt. The story was tender, heroic, affirming and at times very funny. Since the story line is outlined in the other reviews, I'll not be redundant. The fact is that I enjoyed the film on it's many levels and feel that it is a sound investment. The images of the young man fighting for the freedom to be and do what it is his nature to, was exceptional and inspired. The courage that this eleven year old shows in the film is splendid and this film is good not only for the skill of acting but for the heart warming feeling that it inspires. It is true that the basis of the story has been done before in many other ways however it can be important to see it from other perspectives as this did. A good investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drama, Comedy and classic Thriller all in one, April 27 2004
This film is a lost gem. It's not a well known film however if you take the time to view it, you will be impressed. Its classic who kills who and why mixed with twists that unless you have seen it before, you will not suspect what comes next. It is edge of your seat entertainment, Not a lot of blood and guts however it has tons of thrills. Caine's acting is up to it's usual high marks and Reeve is excellant as Caine's gay lover. I would have to say that Reeve pulls the roll off very well. The story is not a gay theme as you may expect, in fact the gay relationship is only one of many plot devices that weave the overall story.
The production quality is good and the film would be excellant for mixed crowds and enjoyed by all. If your looking for a gay theme movie this is a good film but not what I would consider a gay theme film. (...)

4.0 out of 5 stars A short life story of Joe Orton, April 27 2004
This review is from: Prick Up Your Ears [Import] (DVD)
This was an entertaining film with suprizes. The production quality was good and the acting solid. I had no idea what to expect when I got this film and viewed it with an open mind. It is the life story of Joe Orton, Playwrite and all around character. A some what more modern Quentin Crisp although Mr. Crisp was bold and respectful and Mr. Orton was bold and much less concerned with being respectful. For his short life he was an Out, in your face sort. Gary Oldman did a masterful job of not only capturing the bold and harsh aspect of Orton but also did an outstanding job of letting us see the soft, tender and even semi-romantic feeling Orton had for his lover of ten years, Kennith. Just when your sure that Orton is cruel and cold, he shows you a loving act that that renews your hope.
The acting made this film a great investment and the story is excellant. You will most likely want to add this to your collection as I did. It was an impressive film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Production quality was good but the script was not, April 19 2004
This review is from: Red Dirt (DVD)
The overall production was actually good and the images of the south did have a vivid and alive sharpness that was enjoyable however the story is confused and slow.It starts with a scene of this young man [having adult relations] with a young lady that that turns out to be related ( stereo type of southern relations ) and along comes a drifter, a likable sort of fellow that is very passionate about life and the young man starts a friendship that grows. The story had promise but failed to deliver and in the prosess asks you to believe some fairly far out plot lines. The acting was good except some of the southern drawl that got a bit cheesy and unrealistic. I have viewed many independant films and in large find them very good however I found this film to be a poor investment and feel that "Trick" or " I think I do " to be better investments of time. This film has a few [adult] type scenes however is modest and shows very little nudity other than a shower scene of the drifter and the young man and girl in the beginning. (...)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could have been, April 8 2004
This review is from: Ordinary Sinner (DVD)
Ordinary Sinner, was not a bad film nor did it meet its potential. The production quality was good as was the sound quality. The acting was actually OK, Martinez stood out as the priest and was the most connected with the viewer. The issue with this film was that it was a bit slow and forced. The other leads had no connection with the viewer and when they tried to be dramatic, you could see it but not feel it. The script was good but did not get you drawn in to the story as well as it should have. The coming out scene of the priest was the finest moment in the film, it was the most powerful and at that piont you did feel involved but it lost me shortly after that scene. Overall it was not bad but also not a movie you would invite your friends over to see. I would suggest renting it if you can and see if you like it enough to spend the money to buy. This was not a great investment but is worth a look. You may want to see the movie " Priest".
