4.0 out of 5 stars A good story with a few minor flaws!, Dec 14 2003
This review is from: Dead Zone (Hardcover)
Overall, this book was very good. As I was reading it, I never wanted to stop. The main character was described very well, and his actions seemed to have merit. I had no problem with the basic premise of the story. The one problem I had was his ability to sense things by touching them. If he had this power he would have gone mad with images from everything around him giving him signals from the past or future. He would of had to live in a bubble to not get totally engossed by everything. Besides that one thing that annoyed me, I enjoyed this book fully. I put that flaw aside, and read the story for what it was, and it was very good reading. The author has characters you love or hate immeadiatly, and you remember the characters when you put the book down. I always thought that if you put a book down and think about the story weeks later, then it must have been a pretty good book. This novel is one of those books. The ending took me a little by surprise, but then I thought of who the author was, and thought that to myself that the ending he came up with was approriate. A book well worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars How did these guys survive without dying?, Dec 14 2003
This book is a very good book on the life & times of Aerosmith. It particularly deals with the early years of the band, how they formed, their dreams and aspirations, etc.
It seems to not go into as much depth with the advent of their re-emergence into the pop scene in the mid 80's. The book tends to go over 10-12 years very quickly. It sheds a lot of light on little things the band went through or did, and never stays on one subject for too long. How they are all alive is beyond me!! Their drug use is gone over in a great bit of detail. Actually it isn't use for them, it was blatant abuse till your poor. Everything was just looking for the next high, which is a shame in a way.
Now for the bad news. The book can tend to be tedious at times. If your a die hard Aerosmith fan, then these parts will not be boring as you will want to know everything you can about them. I'm just a mediocre fan, and the book seemed to get lagged down at times. Primarily because, to me, it seemed to jump ahead too much. They are going into a story, and then it goes off on a tangent, and I was asking myself why that tangent was even in the book. Or at least in the place that it was.
Overall, the book was worth reading. I learned a few things about the band and the record business by reading this. It just wasn't a riviting story to follow, which kept it tedious at times. But, it does detail the beginnings of this band very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting point of view, Dec 6 2003
I picked up this book solely because I had heard this man talking on the radio to promote this book. For the entire 1.5 hours the man talked, I was riveted to the radio. I was so freakin amazed at this mans story as he was relating it, that I had to have his book.

After having read the book, I was slightly disappointed. Maybe I had built it up too much in my head with anticipation, I do not know. The things this man did were still great if they are true, but it is told from a very egotistical point of view. That left a kind of bad taste to the book. He did not talk that way on the radio. He describes it in the book, as if he were making decisions that may or may not have been according to protocol. All of this was being done without really knowing what was going on around him, (as in the actual buildings falling, etc.). It just left me to wonder how much of the story is true, and how much is added on. It's hard to believe that with all of these men fighting to save lives, he seems to be the best one to always make decisions, or the correct decision. This may just have been a flaw in the way the story was written, I do not know.

All in all, it was a good book. A fascinating tale. I'm just not quite sure of the authenticity of the tale during this tragedy in American history, which is why I only gave it 3 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Impressive For The King Of All Media, Jan 19 2003
First off, I would like to state that I never read Private Parts by Stern, which I was told was a better book. I personally was disappointed in this book. After reading this book, I felt like he was just writing another book because Private Parts did so well. It had some parts that were funny, but for the most part, I felt like it was a book for Stern to insult everyone that he could in a book. I believe that Stern is one of the smartest men in radio, and that he does what he does very well. I am not part of that audience, and perhaps that is why this book did not appeal to me very much. After having read this book, I felt like I had gained nothing by reading it. It left me with no good feeling, and I really wasn't any more educated because of it. I was quite disappointed to say the least.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oz never grows old, Jan 19 2003
I liked this book a lot. Like all Oz books, it gets to be ridiculous at times, but still a lot of fun to read. I think this book was written better than many others that Ruth had done earlier. It tended to be less absurdity, and more geared to the telling of a good Oz story. It didn't have an ending where something really weird occurred to make everything all right. I enjoyed it a lot. It is a childs book, and that fact should not be forgotten, but it is a book to make everyone feel good when they are done reading it. I personally loved it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing....but not great, Jan 5 2003
I found this book to be very entertaining, for half of the book. The first half of the book kept me very entertained. Finding a new world, and explaining it, and how it exists was very good, as were the characters. The second half of the book became irritating to me. Every thing could be fixed with the practice effect, regardless that it was something that rarely had ever happened before in the world that the story takes place in. It became a nice easy way to get the characters out of trouble, and was relied on too much. Was the story entertaining none the less...Yes. I could look past those things I have mentioned, I just did not rate the book very high because of it. I am not going to give the plot away, but several of the characters kept the book amusing. I like to read a story and smile every now and then at cute things that put humor into a book even though a tale is being told, and for that I applaud the author. The book left me with several funny images that still run through my head.

4.0 out of 5 stars The evolution of machine is interesting, April 28 2002
Unlike a lot of other reviews, I found the first 30 pages a little boring, and the rest of the story great. The beginning of the book is excellent, then the character development of the humans occurs, and I found it hard to get through. Then once the robots are in the picture, I found it very exciting to the last page. I have read this general story line of the evolution of machines before, just not in this way. I found it very good. I liked the robot dialogue. I found myself enjoying the robot characters, and the primitive culture they had. The feelings of robots evolving over millions of years is neat, as is the origin of the robots on Titan. There seemed to be a lot of negative reviews of this book, with the beginning being all they liked. I liked the very beginning too, but most of the rest of the book did not let me down. It gets trivial at times, and the rescue of certain characters at the last minute occurs. All in all though, I did not find it a waste of time to read at all. In fact, I think it may be one of the most enjoyable reads I ever had.

5.0 out of 5 stars After almost 50 years-still a good book, Mar 17 2002
This is a very good book to read. The conflicts that go on in the story simultaneously are very good. Sometimes it jumped back in time, instead of staying with the spider story as I wanted it to, but it was all very well done. The emotions of the title character were well done, although I didn't agree with him at times, or with the things he did, it was just my perspective on it. The ending was a little neat to me. It ended a little different than I would have originally guessed. I enjoyed this book. It is very well done. It is ageless in the fact, that it was written 50 yrs ago, but could easily be placed in todays world. The characters and they way they react are timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first King novel, Jan 5 2002
This was the first Stephen King novel I ever read. I was dumb founded by the book. I heard he was a good writer, but this book flattened me. I have only ever read 2 of his novels, so I'm not the greatest King critic, and I do not know his good from his bad. What I do know, is that I enjoyed this book immensely. I never wanted to put it down, ever. I would be tired, and sleepy, and have to put the book down, but where was I to stop reading?....The plot was good, and I thought the charactors were very well explained. I could see them clearly in my head. The story line took a few turns I wasn't expecting as well, and that's always fun reading. It was so suspensefull for me to read this book. If you are even thinking of buying, or reading this book, then I suggest you do. I doubt that you will be disappointed. If I could give more stars, then I would.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read for a night or two, Jan 5 2002
This review is from: Thinner (Paperback)
This book was exciting enough. It enthralled me for several nights. I got into the charactors, and my mind was gone for hours and hours while I read. The charactors are all dark. You really can't root for any charactor in the book, bacause they all have so many flaws. The mobster is a great charactor, but, he is a mobster after all, and enjoys hurting people. The gypsy's are made out as rogues. They are told to be unfeeling and rough, and only caring for themselves. There is no happiness, or goodness in this tale and that is why I liked it so much. Not everything turns out well if we wish it so. I would have given the book 5 stars, except I didn't like the ending. Oh, don't get me wrong, it goes well with the wishy washy charactor. I was just expecting something else is all. I read it, then put the book down, and said to myself, "That's how he's going to end this book?...Odd!". If you like Mr King, then you should, keyword being should, like this book.
