1.0 out of 5 stars Not SACD, Nov 26 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Let It Bleed (Audio CD)
I unfortunately did not read the other reviews before ordering this product and was, as were others, very disappointed to receive a regular (although remastered) CD and not a hybrid SACD as described. One has to wonder how many reviews must be written before Amazon corrects their erroneous advertising for this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Underappreciated Talent, Feb 20 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Upon reading the only other review for this album I felt compelled to add my own take on it. Lindsay Buckingham's talent is, in my opinion, unquestionable. However, like Ry Cooder, it is his taste which sometimes runs contrary to others', particularly when compared with mainstream pop music being played on the radio at the time of the release of his albums.

"Live at the Bass Performance Hall" is an album typical of Lindsay Buckingham's career ever since Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours". The Mac's biggest selling, and one of the biggest selling albums ever, "Rumours" was successful in large part due to Lindsay's production (although the album credits Fleetwood Mac with production). In fact, it resulted in his being given virtually free reign to produce its follow-up "Tusk".

Although "Tusk" also credits Fleetwood Mac with production (and special thanks from the band to Lindsay Buckingham) it was Lindsay who took the lead. Sales of "Tusk" were a bitter disappointment following the runaway success of "Rumours" but bear in mind that its sales would still have placed it as another band's biggest selling album ever. The band turned upon Lindsay and blamed him for its (very relative) commercial failure.

Each of Lindsay's solo albums has contained radio accessible product such as the hits "Trouble" and "Go Insane" but also contains a good selection of more experimental pop, filled with studio wizardry, overdubs and layered vocals. "Bass" is no different.

If you are the sort of listener who loves a hit version of a song and never wants to hear a different arrangement, solo acoustic version or even an almost note-perfect live version, then "Bass" is not for you. But if you want to experience a musician stripping down the arrangements, baring his artistic soul and performing live to an enthusiastic audience who obviously "gets" what Lindsay is doing, I highly recommend it. Be sure to watch the acompanying DVD as seeing Lindsay during this performance adds another facet and makes clear what the album is all about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Stories, Jan 13 2011
This review is from: Light Lifting (Paperback)
I agree that the writing was of the highest quality however my biggest disappointment with this collection is exactly what another reviewer liked: the author leaves each story mid-way through, never concluding one to my satisfaction. It was as though this book was actually an excerpt of individual novels, designed to give the reader a sneak peak at what awaits him should he choose to purchase each individual novel. If this were "The Green Mile", being released in a series of paperbacks as that Steven King tale was, then this would be enjoyable. It would leave the reader awaiting next month's installment. As it is, it left me wanting MacLeod to finish what he started.

4.0 out of 5 stars SACD versus DSD, Nov 7 2010
For the reviewer who rated this album only one star and others who may consider the purchase as an SACD to add to your collection, please read the following: "SACD is a disc of identical physical dimensions to a standard compact disc; the density of the disc is the same as a DVD and it encodes audio using a process known as Direct Stream Digital." Credit to Wikipedia for this information.

SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) is the consumer name for discs that make use of the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) recording process.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading on the packaging, Aug 2 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While I agree with the only other current review that this is a great album and the sound quality is fantastic, I was nevertheless disappointed when I first watched it. The packaging very clearly states that it is presented in "High Definition 1080p Widescreen" and the menu certainly is. But when you advance to the concert it is 4:3 and a disappointment. As far as I am concerned that is false advertising.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big enough Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler fan to recently fly to Boston with my wife and daughters to see his Get Lucky tour so I'll be keeping this in my collection but I'll probably rarely watch it and will treat it as simply a music disc.

Your site states "This is a DVD-Audio disc which is playable on most DVD players as well as all DVD-Audio players." however it also clearly indicates this to be a Blu Ray disc which is compatible with no DVD players or DVD-Audio players.Mojo (Blu-Ray Audio Version)

4.0 out of 5 stars Cape Breton Ceilidh meets Tom Waits, Mar 7 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
To add to the previous review, if you haven't heard the Tom Fun Orchestra, imagine arriving in the kitchen during a Cape Breton ceilidh (pronounced cay-lee) any Saturday night. Instead of bringing along your best drinking buddy, you introduce Tom Waits, Buckwheat Zydeco, a couple stray horn players from Beale Street and a sleepy Bruce Springsteen. All join in the musical merry-making with "The Boss" napping in a corner and waking once in a while to wail on his harmonica.

If this appeals to you, buy this CD and support original Canadian home-grown talent and enjoy the great music. If it doesn't, I suggest you turn off the mass-produced and over-sampled pop music you're listening to and see what happens when real musicians play real instruments together!

1.0 out of 5 stars Save Jason from himself!!, April 12 2008
I enjoyed Jason Statham's performance in "Snatch" and I enjoyed his performance in "The Transporter". Neither movie, while perhaps 100% believable, went terribly over the top.

Then came "Crank" and "The Transporter 2". If Jason Statham continues with movies such as these we'll all soon be wondering whatever became of him. The world doesn't need another Steven Seagal in the movies, thank you very much. One is more than enough.

An Audi so indestructible it's paint doesn't even scratch. A driver so skilled he can flip the car in midair and use a convenient crane to remove a bomb from its undercarriage. A femme fatale ("Sin City" style) who wears practically nothing and a jet (not to mention it's two passengers) who survive a full speed crash from the top of the atmosphere into the ocean nearly intact. Then there's the inept police ERT (SWAT for you Americans) unit... why go on?

If you're reading this before renting, buying or even borrowing this movie, save yourself two hours of your life you'll never get back. Walk to the neighbourhood pub, have a beer and engage a stranger in conversation about today's weather, it will be time better spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A longtime fan, Mar 4 2007
This review is from: Boston (Mastersound) (Audio CD)
It's interesting to read the reviews left by some customers and I can appreciate the positive and negative comments left by those who are able to explain their points of view. Those who state their opinions as incontrovertible fact are, in my personal opinion, easily dismissed. They suck? Why? Classic? Why?

I feel they are excellent, not because they wrote spacy lyrics that represent psychodelia or because they were politically outspoken (neither, in fact) but because they displayed top-notch musical skill, offered no apologies and stuck to their guns. Not one synthesizer to be heard for years; they played real instruments!

Anyone who enjoys a good electric guitar must find themselves humming or tapping their toes. This music was not only fun but it was lasting. If you don't agree, turn on the radio and wait. You'll hear them again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing the Point, Jan 5 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While I strongly agree with most of the reviews rating this CD very high, it seems some of the reviewers have missed what seems to me to be the point of this series of five albums.

This series gave Johnny the opportunity to give a nod to a mostly younger generation of songwriters whose work he admired by recording their songs in his own unmistakable style. Tempered, of course by Rick Rubin's production and the input of numerous session players and other stars, not least of which were most of The Heartbreakers, Johnny did take the opportunity to re-interpret some of his own compositions as well.

Before commenting on Johnny's songwriting in songs such as "I Hung My Head" however, reviewers might take a moment to read their liner notes and then offer their compliments to such songwriters as Sting ("I Hung My Head"), Tom Petty ("Southern Accents") and the many others whose work impressed Johnny Cash enough to inspire him to re-interpret it himself.
