4.0 out of 5 stars Vietnam - Up Close and Personal, April 25 2004
This review is from: Platoon (VHS Tape)
A 1986 depiction of the American forces in Vietnam, Oliver Stone's Platoon gives incredible insight into the lunacy caused from war with its emotional and harsh representation of American soldiers slipping into darkness during their tour of duty through Vietnam. Charlie Sheen stars as Chris, a college drop out who volunteers for combat and instead goes to hell. Torn by the insanity that is prominent in the brutality of Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) and the unrealistic morality of Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), Chris soon realizes the cold and despair felt by all.
This classic Vietnam portrayal won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Director. Platoon delved past the initial us and them conflict. Not only showing the dispute with the Viet Cong, it represented a civil war between the soldiers themselves with the violent followers of Barnes versus the moral personalities supporting Elias, and even divided them through their differences in drug choices. Not for family viewing, Platoon is a classic illustration of the madness brought on by combat, and is for all who want to learn of the Vietnam experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yeah, theyll be totally discreet., April 14 2004
This review is from: Ghostbusters (Bilingual) (DVD)
20 years after Ghostbusters original release, symmetrical book-stacking and the stay-puft marshmallow man are still fabulous comedy chaos. Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray head off the Ghostbusters cast as paranormal scientist's on their own for the first time who decide to do what other than go into business catching and imprisoning ghosts. (Credit for screenwriting goes to Akroyd and Ramis.) Joined by Sigourney Weaver, the would be girl friend of the uncouth Dr. Venkman (Murray) who, incidentally, becomes possessed by a demigod, and Rick Moranis, this all-star cast provides classic one liners that are still hilarious after two decades.
Not only downright funny, this movie was credited with Academy Award nominations for Best Song and Best Visual Effects, and it still gives a great show. This is a comedy classic that will always remind us who we're going to call.

5.0 out of 5 stars History X - Unfounded Hate, April 4 2004
Released in 1998 by New Line Cinema, American History X is a serious drama that reveals racism and hate prevalent throughout the world today. Set in Southern California, where a real life white supremacy "Skinhead" movement has flourished off and on for more than a decade, American History X portrays the story of Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton). Vinyard, second in command of the local hate group, serves three years in the penitentiary for the brutal killing of two black men. However, in prison he finds the truth concerning his racist cohorts and is befriended by a black inmate. Upon his release from prison, Vinyard finds himself a changed man that must save his younger brother Danny (Edward Furlong) from the movement he helped establish.
Norton's intense portrayal of both sides of the elder Vinyard, first as the angry, hate filled racist, and then as the loving, older brother determined to save his younger sibling from following the same path, earned him an Academy Award nomination. This five star drama is emotional and powerful, and is filled with a recognizable cast including Beverly D'Angelo, Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould and Stacy Keach. Not for the weak and weary, American History X delivers the brutality associated with all racist groups, white and black, through to its climactic ending.
