4.0 out of 5 stars the best book out there for learning about channels and masks, March 4 2009
Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-On-One by Deke McClelland.

I'm a big fan of the one-on-one series. If you need to learn about channels & masks, this is the book to get. The tutorials on masking hair and alpha channels are 2nd to none. The fact that this book also comes with 3hrs video training makes this book the obvious choice for learning about this subject. There's also no other book out there on this subject, and luckily it's Deke who's written it.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great all around Photoshop read, March 4 2009
Photoshop CS4 - The Missing Manual by Lisa Snider King.

The Missing Manual series is always a good investment in your time and money. This specific title covers every aspect of Photoshop and gives beginners a good intro and even provides great productivity tips for experienced users who are wanting to get up to speed with Photoshop CS4.

I read another review on the NAPP site that said this book reminded them of the original Photoshop Bible series by Deke McClelland. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. The nice thing about Lesa's book is that she doesn't drive us nuts with a crazy sense of humor like Deke did. Yeah Lesa. I should say I really like Deke too. Lesa's Photoshop CS4 Missing Manual is a great replacement book to the bible series.

4.0 out of 5 stars great tips for becoming a professional photoshop artist, March 4 2009
Real World Compositing with Adobe Photoshop CS4 by Dan Moughamian & Scott Valentine.

This book is an affordably priced solution for those amateur retouchers/digital photographers looking to transition to the pro level. This is not a book for learning how to use Photoshop. It's a book for those intermediate level users who need help to develop planning and workflow skills.

The beginning of the book talks about pre-viz and planning. The authors clearly have a great deal of experience and share some great insights for you to be taking into account when planning your composites.

While I found the chapter on lighting to be rather light, the authors made some good recommendations for some other reading sources for further study. One of the best chapters is about the new 3D modeling and rendering features now available in CS4 Extended. The authors gave a good introduction to this new feature as well as a good intro to Cinema 4D as a complementary app.

5.0 out of 5 stars a no-brainer, Jan. 11 2009
this is a great little book for the price. It's got everything in it that you would expect; download, processing and printing. It's all there. What you'll discover is that after reading the book, you'll find it easier to just leave by your keyboard. It's small enough that it doesn't get in the way.

This is by no means a complete photoshop book. It is targeted for a specific task and it's priced that way too. Far too often Photoshop books are crammed with everything and weigh in at a few pounds. For many that's a necessity, but that's not what this book is about. In fact, if you're a shooter that is mobile and processes on site, you'll probably end up throwing this book in your bag as a quick reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for beginners and a great refresher for experienced users too!!!, Jan. 10 2009
Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-On-One by Deke McClelland has been revised for CS4 and is an amazing training resource for the new user and still contains info that the experienced user will benefit from.

Written for the new user, it starts with the basics of the PS CS4 user interface and using Adobe Bridge to access your photo files. He moves on to the basics of colour correction before getting into retouching and photo compositioins

"Pearl of Wisdom" are insightful little bits of info found throughout the book, that are like pull out quotes, but are Deke's thoughts about some unique experience that he thinks you should know about to make the project go smoother. He also has similar items called "Further Investigation" which refers you to some online resources to learn more about a specific topic. Kind of like reading the books listed in the footnotes!

The book comes with over 2 hrs of video training that is unique to this book (not extracted from his hundreds of hours of training on lynda.com). It's advised that you watch each video before or after reading the accompanying chapter in the book. The process of Read, Watch, and Do, is one of the most effective ways of learning Photoshop and is unique to Deke's one-on-one series.

This book is complete in that Deke chooses to teach you everything you need to know to get the basics done in Photoshop and do them well. However, features found in Photoshop Extended like 3D and video functions are NOT explored. The book would be too big to carry around if he did.

I recommend this book for all beginning users. Experienced users would still learn some good tips from this book, as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting started with InDesign, Jan. 2 2009
Adobe InDesign CS4 One-On-One (Paperback) by Deke McClelland

Adobe Indesign CS4 One-On-One by Deke McClelland has been revised for CS4 and is a tremendous resource for the new and experienced InDesign user. Written for the new user, it starts with the basics of the ID CS4 user interface and starting your first document. As you progress thru the project based material you are exposed to invaluable tips and tricks that will make you an ID pro in no time.

"Pearl of Wisdom" are insightful little bits of info found throughout the book, that are like pull out quotes, but are Deke's thoughts about some unique experience that he thinks you should know about to make the project go smoother.

The book comes with nearly 4 hrs of video training that is unique to this book (not extracted from his hundreds of hours of training on lynda.com). It's advised that you watch each video before or after reading the accompanying chapter in the book. The process of Read, Watch, and Do, is one of the most effective ways of learning InDesign. As well, Deke's humorous writing style makes you think he's right next to you.

For experienced users, Deke successfully explains complex subjects such as XML tags. As well, even thru the basics chapters, experienced users can pick up productivity tips and hidden features that only Deke can find. As an addition to this revision, Deke digs into the interactive features new to IDCS4 such as buttons and page transitions.

I recommend this book for all users.

InDesign Type: Professional Typography with Adobe InDesign CS2
InDesign Type: Professional Typography with Adobe InDesign CS2
by Nigel French
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 26.45

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for every print designer's bookshelf, Jan. 2 2009
InDesign Type: Professional Typography with Adobe InDesign CS2 (Paperback)
by Nigel French.

This book is so packed with information, don't expect to read it in one sitting. More than likely, you'll read it a few pages at a time. This isn't a book that you read once and toss when a new version of InDesign comes out, this book applies whether you use CS1 thru CS4.

Nigel runs thru everything typographic in InDesign (as the title suggests). Chapter headlines like "Don't Fear the Hyphen" and "Text Wraps: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", should give you an idea of the kind of fun and educational writing style Nigel has. My favorite fun chapter was the last one called "Type Effects", Nigel presented some great real world production tips that I've referenced a handful of times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infrared is an amazing world to explore, Jan. 2 2009
Digital Infrared Photography (Hardcover) by Cyrill Harnischmacher.

This hardcover book was a real treat to read. It's nicely organized and layed out in a way that makes understanding this subject very easy.

Cyrill breaks down Infrared Photography by theory, camera choices, practical aspects such as exposure and composition and finally post-processing via Photoshop. In his section on the digital darkroom he presents some very impressive techniques on channel swapping.

While it is short in length, only 106 pages, it is affordably priced and definitely a good investment if you are considering getting into IR photography.

Visual Communication in Digital Design
Visual Communication in Digital Design

Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 18.89
25 used & new from CDN$ 11.44

5.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to the study of graphic design, Jan. 2 2009
Visual Communication in Digital Design (Paperback) by Ji Yong Park.

This is a great intro to the study of graphic design. Ji Yong Park has a doctorate of design and begins the book by introducing the reader to the most basic of graphic design elements; the point. From there he builds on it by introducing the remainder of design elements such as line, shapes, texture, colour, size and space.

The chapters are well organized by subject and they build on each other by showing numerous examples of the presented material. If you are looking for a book that will introduce you to the fundamentals of graphic design and give you good examples to learn from then I recommend this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great reference, Oct. 18 2008
Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland and published by O'Reilly.

A very handy and extensive guide to using CS3 and all its features, including a great chapter on Advanced CSS. I enjoyed the tips and references to websites when appropriate and found it a clear and concise reference guide to have on hand, even though it clocks in at close to 1,000 pages!
