4.0 out of 5 stars You Are There!, Dec 26 2011
In this densely-packed collage of fifties popular culture, the author evokes the zeitgeist as no film historian has yet, and in a way no one living through the period might have experienced it. Hoberman gains momentum as he bounces from now obscure but then topical films to those that are part of the fifties canon while overlaying historical, political and cultural themes, events and comments. For perhaps the first time you get a sense of the simultaneity of film premieres and political pronouncements that create a tapestry of the times right out of a James Ellroy novel. Impressively researched, immensely edifying and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci Fi for the Mind's Eye, May 17 2010
Another welcome entry in the 101 film book series. I was thrilled to find that even the entries on my favorites had something insightful to say. As usual, I might suggest the names of a few omissions but would be hesitant to dispute the choices made. Despite the large number of excellent contributors, there seems to be a consistently pithy and intelligent style to the writing. With gorgeous color reproductions of posters and uncommon stills bracketing each two page entry, the book is a feast for the eyes as well as the mind. This series is right up there with "The Rough Guides" as a superb introduction to genre films.

5.0 out of 5 stars China Unleashed, April 17 2010
John Woo has finally delivered a masterpiece that combines his mastery of storytelling and action, and the latest in film technology with a deep love for his Chinese heritage.
This complex story of one fateful military encounter in 208AD has costumes, sets, weapons, and set pieces that are eye-popping, especially in Blu-Ray, and characters who are more than just symbols.
CG technology does not detract from the storytelling and the deployment of some 1500 Chinese soldiers in land and naval battles is spectacular. The sheer enthusiasm of all involved manifests in the astonishing power and beauty this 5-hour-long film .
