2.0 out of 5 stars Poor..., May 24 2001
This review is from: Ultra (Audio CD)
It's a shame 'cause Depeche Mode used to be such a great band - it was even THE band back in my gymnasium times.
What a pity to release such a sleepy album. The instrumentation on 'Ultra' is pretty inventive but most of the songs do lack positivity and maybe even musical willingness. You simply get sleepy, 'cause they're all in the same far too slow atmosphere.
Especially the hit single 'Barrel Of A Gun' is embarrassingly boring. Not worth the former Depeche Mode quality stamp.
Only highlights are 'It's No Good' which COULD make it to a 'Best Of' compilation, and 'Freestate', especially its crispy guitar.
Depeche Mode needs to work on this adjusted style. It can work. But it'll TAKE some work!
A big compliment though for sending 'Ultra' out on vinyl too!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Yet Ridiculous, March 24 2001
This review is from: 10 (Widescreen/Full Screen) (DVD)
Even the title for this film does not fit into anything. Dudley Moore's character once mentions that Bo Derek's character is an '11' on a scale from 1 to 10... so why is the film called '10'!?!
Anyway, as usual, Dudley Moore provides a lot of good laughs, not only in the slapstick genre and his classic drunk scenes. And these moments are the only highlights of an otherwise outdated and therefore nowadays ridiculous film.
Sex? None.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Straight-Forward Spike Lee Joint, March 14 2001
The best thing about Spike Lee's films is that he expresses his thoughts very directly, and yet without giving in to the temptations of including easy effects like explicit violence.
'Do The Right Thing' is basicly about stupidity. Stupidity that leads to intolerance. Stupidity that escalates because of... stupidity.
A very honest film about reciprocal racism, and therefore one of the better on the subject!
A straight-forward Spike Lee Joint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Live Album, March 11 2001
This review is from: Yesshows (Remaster) (Audio CD)
There's not much to say about this great live experience. It feautures songs from before the two Trevor's influenced Yes, meaning from what most fans consider the band's best period.
Three songs from one of the very best albums ever, 'Going For The One', two epics (especially 'The Gates Of Delirium' is ge-reatly performed!), and a few more. Now THAT's some live album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oldyes, March 11 2001
This review is from: Yesterdays (Remaster) (Audio CD)
This is a kind of 'Best Of' from Yes' earliest albums. It is also one of the few albums that features the studio recording of Yes' interpretation of the Simon & Garfunkel song 'America'.
Interesting if you're not familiar with the older Yesstuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poetic And Sad, March 11 2001
This review is from: The Virgin Suicides (VHS Tape)
'The Virgin Suicides' is a beautiful film. Beautiful in its sadness, in its story, in its filming, in its acting. But especially in its sadness which is described kind of poetically.
The film zigzags a little between genres which is not always a plus. For instance, the not unimportant idea of letting some 'outside' boys, who even seem very young, be the storytellers, is not really successful.
What also remains fuzzy is the punchline. But these weaknesses in the storytelling style do fortunately not really ruin the poetic beauty of an all in all worthwile film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Comedy, March 11 2001
Finally a film that gets me to laugh out loud several times. It's witty, it's typical Hugh Grant, it's British, and it's sometimes unrealistically ridiculous. So I laugh. And you'll laugh.
Why the main character Charles (Hugh Grant) falls for the sensual nymphomaniac USAmerican Carrie (Andie Mac Dowell) remains a mystery, but at least they finally found a part for Andie Mac Dowell in which she makes SOME kind of sense.
A funny British film which you have to have seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Art Book, March 10 2001
This review is from: Marks of Excellence (Paperback)
I basicly see this book as an art book. Enjoy the design of old and contemporary trademarks and their functions. The text though, is very technical - as in other areas of marketing, the science of trademarks and branding is overacademized for nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Dark Comedy, March 10 2001
This review is from: U-Turn [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Many people might not be able to laugh about this film. But personally, as I love black humour, I laughed a lot of times throughout the film. And I chilled as well. And lost my breath over Jennifer Lopez who is a much better actress than you might imagine. In general, the acting is brilliant. Sean Penn being the star, the other parts are either filled out by other big names such as Nick Nolte or Clare Danes, or they are played by stereotypes.
The entire atmosphere in the film is created with unusual efficiency. Through the filming, especially the camera angles and the cutting, you get the feeling to be out there, in the middle of it all, in the unbearable heat of Arizona, in the claustrophobically psychic town of Superior.
The best thing about 'U Turn' though, is that you never know what's gonna happen next. Who's tricking who...
An absolute must-see!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Genuine Piece Of Film Art, March 10 2001
This review is from: Pink Floyd the Wall (VHS Tape)
'Pink Floyd The Wall' succeeds in putting three different artforms together in a symbiotically beautiful way. Pink Floyd's spectacular music, Alan Paker's film, and Gerald Scarfe's animated drawing.
There are so many details and possible interpretations in this film that it is not enough to just watch it once. After ten times, you will still discover new aspects of this historical piece of art. And every single time you watch it, you will still be amazed.
It is simply unique. See it!
