5.0 out of 5 stars As a Liza vehicle - a 5 indeed, Dec 10 2005
This review is from: Stepping Out (VHS Tape)
.... in this she sparkles, she shines.... there are elements of Michael Jackson and mama(watch Judy singing Swanee in A STAR IS BORN) and compare it to Liza`s belting of the song Stepping Out....
The supporting cast is good if on the cardboard-side.... It`s a shame it was released straight to the video market(we didn`t see it in Norway until 1993), cause it remains a solid hand of work. On October 19 2005 I met Liza Minnelli in Oslo and I thanked her for giving us the best concert of hers in years... This was NOT a has been diva, but a legend - still growing, still working and still in fine voice.
True, her dancing efforts are history compared to this film, but the audience wouldn`t let her go and she finally sang I`ll Be Seeing You -acapella....
This may be her last musical on the screen, but it certainly is a testament(with CABARET and NEW YORK NEW YORK) of how great and versatile she once was....

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, July 19 2004
This review is from: The Blue Lagoon (DVD)
The film was dissected by most critics, but I have always enjoyed it. The stars; Christopher Atkins and Brooke Shields shine in their youthful beauty and performances. The movie was banned in Oslo when it opened in 1980, but it played to full houses in the provinces. The docu on this DVD is good, but the sound is not on par with the movie.
I think the critics at the time was embaressed by its sensual frankness and therefor tried to "kill it". It was a huge hit though and still is a film you should see with your loved-one:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Arlene Dahl IS GREAT, but underused, July 19 2004
This review is from: Three Little Words (VHS Tape)
This is one of Astaire`s lesser known vehicles, but in my opinion - 1 of his very best. It was his own favorite movie. He is a delight co-starring with Red Skelton(his intense comic style is toned down here) and has a wonderful chemistry with the great dancer Vera-Ellen. The film is full of good songs and memorable supporting players including Gloria DeHaven(as her own mother Mrs Carter DeHaven), Debbie Reynolds(dubbed by Helen Kane) and Carleton Carpenter. Debbie and Carleton was reteamed in the Jane Powell film TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE and indeed stopped the show with "Aba-Daba Honeymoon".
But when the Norwegian actress Arlene Dahl enters the film; she brings the film a step further. Her beauty and charm makes u go wild and her "I Love You So Much"-number good and simply staged. Unfortunately her role as Eileen Percy - the silent movie star - is a minor 1, but she glows every time she`s in front of the camera.
Miss Dahl has visited her homeland many times and has done wonders for the Norwegian community in the States. She is also the mother of Lorenzo Lamas of Falcon Crest and Renegade fame.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MGM`S BEST, July 19 2004
This review is from: High Society (DVD)
I saw this film years before THE PHILADELPHIA STORY on which it is based. Mind you: THIS MUSICAL is far better than The Philadelphia Story. Grace Kelly is wonderful as Tracy, whereas Hepburn is hard and difficult 2 like. Stewart is an irritating, uncharismatic C.K. Dexter Haven. Sinatra`s Dexter is at his best. Indeed when u have a cast like Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Calhern and Louis Armstrong - 1 should just shut up and let them do their stuff. Indeed Charles Walters did; and what a lovely film it turned out 2 be.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROMAN AND MIA`S BEST, July 19 2004
With all-star-performances from Mia, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer and John Cassavetes, Polish-director Roman Polanski offers his BEST film.... The seduction-scenes with the Devil - and Rosemary`s nightmares were based on LSD-trips and discussions between Roman and his wife, Sharon Tate. Sharon can be seen briefly in the "making of" and supposedly as an extra when Rosemary is having a party. The film is still disturbing and watchable. Rosemary`s humming is indeed by Mia Farrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars ATKINS & SHIELDS - BOTH GREAT, July 19 2004
This review is from: The Blue Lagoon (DVD)
I remember that it was banned in Oslo when it came in 1980, but we saw it out of town hehehe. The DVD is perfect. The cinematgraphy and music as good as it gets. The film was dissected by critics, but I think at the time it was strong stuff to see sexual frankness from a major Hollywood studio. Christopher Atkins and Brooke Shields are both at their best in this film. It is the perfect film for two people in the beginning of their love-affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars JULIE ANDREWS! A LEGEND!, July 19 2004
This review is from: Victor Victoria (DVD)
I remember sitting through it in 1983 in the theatre with Mama and Grandmother. We all LOVED it. With Poppins, Maria and Gertrude; Julie`s Victor/Victoria is HER BEST effort on celluloid. Leslie Ann-Warren, James Garner, Robert Preston, Blake Edwards, Henry Mancini & Leslie Bricusse ALL excell in this comedy. It may be a trifle long and the Hercule Poirot-imitation unnecessary; but it really is the last of the GREAT MGM MUSICALS(although it was shot i England, released by MGM). The set-designs are a treasure 2 behold.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT`S A MUST ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, July 19 2004
.....and the screenplay is wonderful as are the actors. There are no fancy camera-angles or MTV editing of high speed(compared to Moulin Rouge and William Shakespeare`s Romeo+Juliet - classics in their own right), but the camera let the protagonists do their jobs and they do it admirably... Not that every character is of importance; I prefer Connery, Rowlands, Jolie and Philippe; but we all have our favorites... It`s a movie that few people would find dull, boring or just bad.... It`s a low-key masterpiece:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ALL-TIME SHOCKER, July 19 2004
This review is from: Jaws (Full Screen) (DVD)
I`ve seen this over and over... It simply never outstays its welcome. The thrills are still at potent as in 1975. Yup, they did make sequels and Deep Blue Sea; but it can never be like this....Thanks to the genius of Spielberg, Verna Fields and a GOOD screenplay by Garl Gootlieb and author Peter Bencheley this is both drama, horror and suspense on a high level. JAWS is indeed high art. Scheider, Gary, Duvall, Hamilton and Dreyfuss ALL excell in their roles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not his BEST, but FULL of exciting scenes, July 19 2004
This review is from: Psycho (Widescreen) (DVD)
I`ve seen this film numerous times and I have always found it a bit cold, made without passion. Sure the shower-scene in particular is a mind-blower, but Hitchcock was much better off in the suspense-genre... This story simply isn`t interesting enough. It reason may be that it always had a GREAT reputation and everyone who ever saw it knew if by heart and thus destroyed the first viewing of others... Another factor is that Janet Leigh is much 2 pretty and ladylike for her role. When I saw Anne Heche in the 1998 movie I realised that H E R Marion was indeed a low-life, tramp - sort of - who jumped at the chance of doing something stupid 2 her employer. Janet Leigh`s Marion is never at any moment stupid... Alas, Anne was much more satisfying, as were Viggo Mortensen and Julianne Moore.
John Gavin and Vera Miles are lifeless - cardboard stereotypes and that leaves us only with Martin Balsam and the great Anthony Perkins. THEY breath life into their characters and are the main reason I like this version. William Macy and Vince Vaughn repeated their roles, but eh..... hehehehe???????? Let there be silence. In 1983, Perkins reprised his role as Norman Bates to even better effect in the splendid PSYCHO II.
