3.0 out of 5 stars Good debut, but it wore on me., April 29 2004
This review is from: Shake Your Money Maker (Audio CD)
This was a good debut from a promising band, but to be honest after a few plays I felt like I heard all I needed to hear. Hearing "Hard to Handle" on the radio way before they got popular was a breath of fresh air, but after a while this record got old to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good debut!, April 29 2004

This was a good debut by a band who had a real chance to be something. However, a weaker second record scared people away. This has some highlights, especially the first half. Those who know the best known songs may want to seek out "In The Land of Salvation and Sin" somewhere and come back to this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good compilation!, April 29 2004
This is a good compliation of the Satellites. But where you need to start is with "In The Land of Salvation and Sin" record and go from there. That is an all time classic of rock and roll. This has tastes from that record, but you need more than an appetizer!

3.0 out of 5 stars Was expecting more..., April 29 2004

This, to me, was a bit disappointing. The change of pace is nice, but the record to me sounds same-y after a while, and it doesn't really hold much interest to me. But this is not an abject failure, and further movements in the acoustic direction by Martsch should be applauded.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guitar hero celebrates his craft!, April 29 2004
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Doug Martsch is a true guitar hero. While he operates out of the mainstream, he is an accomplished and powerful player, and most "classic" rock fans would enjoy this if given a chance. The songwriting is excellent, as always, and the live setting really makes the sound even more powerful than in studio. Buy it for the people who just listen to the same songs over and over, and they'll be converted!

3.0 out of 5 stars For completists, April 29 2004

This is OK. It has some good stuff, some interesting stuff, and stuff that should have been left on the cutting room floor. I'd say only BTS die-hards should buy it. It's not bad, but it's not top-quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a departure - but it's still quality, April 29 2004
Doug Martsch and Built to Spill turn down the guitar heroics a notch. However, the songwriting and sonic pallete and even better than before. "In Your Mind" is my personal favorite, with the different sounds going on in the mix.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more focused - almost brilliant., April 29 2004
Except for some slower spots, this record, their last independent record, puts it all together for Built to Spill. It's a guitar lovers record, and the songwriting keeps improving. Definitely worth seeking out and blasting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great guitar record!, April 29 2004

Major label status has improved BTS. Their indy work, to me, was a bit spotty and at times indulgent. Now the guitar majesty of Doug Martsch is focused, and the songwriting improved. A fine addition to anyone's catalog!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guitar record, April 29 2004
This review is from: Perfect from Now on (Audio CD)
Fans of the guitar, this is an album for you. BTS has improved over the years and found their niche, and this is a classic. It makes you want to reach for an air insturment and flail along. Sure, the voice gets some getting used to - but that shouldn't distract one from the majesty of the record!
