3.0 out of 5 stars Good movie but disappointing transfer, April 24 2012

Yes, the picture and sound are better than the DVD, but neither are as good as they might have been. This is a typical Alliance Blu-ray which is not a compliment. The DVD had full English subtitles throughout and there was no reason to miss these off on this disc. The music sounds fine but the dialogue is nothing special and it would have been a great help, especially to the millions who are hearing impaired, to have had the subtitles, especially as they are listed on the subtitle menu, which then helpfully informs you they cannot be accessed as part of the disc design! English comprises about a third of the dialoge and has no subtitles. The other languages are well subtitled in English. There is a French dub for all languages without subtitles. Like most of the Alliance Canada Blu-rays this is bare bones. Hopefully a better release will appear somewhere else eventually. If you are not troubled by the subtitling and limited language options then this a better disc than the DVD but with just a little more care it could have been a lot better

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful disc, June 19 2011
I am at a loss to understand the two negative reviews. My blu-ray disc is very much better than the DVD and a worthwhile upgrade all round. The subtitles are not however complete as the songs are excluded. If you like this film the Blu-ray is definately the way to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars King of Kings on Bl-ray looks terrific, June 19 2011

Considering the age of the film this restored release is really very good. The colors are rich and vibrant and the darker scenes especially come up much better than I expected. The sound is very clear and although excellent English subtitles are provided, I, who am hard of hearing, almost did not need them. Very good value.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great movie but a very poor transfer, May 30 2011

This review is from: Mrs. Brown BD [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
It's only saving grace is that unlike the non-anamorphic DVD, you get the full widescreen transfer. My experience with this Blu-ray is sadly very different to the two earlier reviews. The picture quality is just about OK but no better than DVD. The sound is variable with a choice of rather booming dubbed French or a better English stereo. No subtitles or extras are available, (other than a rubbishy medley of trailers), despite being listed on some websites as having English and French subtitles. The film is of course very fine but this is release is a disgrace. Alliance in Canada have been trashed before but this time they have excelled themselves. Hopefully this wonderful film will get a release somewhere else that does it justice. This is NOT that release. It is hardly worth a rent if you can rent the DVD cheaper! To add insult to injury it is region A locked. Mrs Brown has been very poorly served on DVD and now by this very poor Blu-ray, what a shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected, Nov. 30 2010

Alliance in particular and Canadian special Blu-ray releases in general have a poor reputation but this is a welcome exception. The English subtitles do not appear when German is spoken but otherwise are excellent. If you choose the dubbed English audio, (which is surprisingly good with entertaining Italian accented English), then the subtitles do not fit too well as they have obviously been done from the Italian original. These are minor points however. Considering the age the transfer is quite strong and a big improvement on the DVD. The featurette is not really about this film but about Roberto Benigni. It is SD 4x3 and one viewing will be enough. The cover is reversable English / French, I presume Canadian French but could not say for sure. This is an excellent value disc. The price is cheap and Canadian post is brilliant. I got my disc in Australia in 5 days! Do not hesitate, strongly recommended.
