Mystic Fear
Mystic Fear

This review is from: Mystic Fear (Paperback)
"To be wronged is nothing unless one continues to remember it" says Jan Evan Whitford, the author, through one of his characters in this ultimate non-stop adrenalin generating thriller.

Unfortunately for Nikki O'Conner, the heroine, the one she has wronged 25 years ago continues to remember it. Fortunately for us, the readers, we get to read this incredibly satisfying thriller as a result.

15-year-old Nikki, a gorgeous cheerleader, innocently accepts a high school double-dog dare to play a prank on a dashing but extremely shy male schoolmate named Marion Hess. The prank is called the "Marion Hess Fact-Finding Commission". You must read this novel to find out what fact Nikki is supposed to find out. Also, find out why Marion feels he is so fatally wronged that he still continues to remember it, hatching a relentless "Nikki O'Conner "Become" Mission".

Let's fast forward. Nikki, at 40, is still as gorgeous and sought after. She is now a park ranger and life is good for her now. She has survived two husbands and now is happily married for three months to a third husband who adores her. As a testament of his undying love, he gives her a rare antique purple brooch.

The plot thickens when they discover after they have the brooch appraised, that it is worth a million dollars. However, little do they know that legend has it that this beautiful object brings bad luck to all but its rightful owner. Well, Nikki is obviously not the rightful owner, because when she comes home one night, she finds her beloved third husband murdered and Marion's message addressed to her at the crime scene, hence the title, Mystic Fear.

Reading this novel is like going on a non-stop roller coaster ride through a series of romance, mystery, psychosis, and murderous chain of events, all of which leads to Marion's obsession to make Nikki "Become".

It is also amazing how the author, Jan Evan Whitford, is able to juggle an enormous array of engaging characters and copious number of subplots, and tie them all together neatly and beautifully to give it such an agreeable ending. Bravo! Mr. Whitford.

I would strongly recommend this thriller to readers who want it all and are willing to risk a heart attack reading it!

The Furnace
The Furnace

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, Feb. 24 2012
This review is from: The Furnace (Paperback)
The Furnace is a book about a homicide investigator named Lieutenant Kyle Tanner. He is one of the best at what he does and can make difficult captures that others couldn't. SOLEX One is where his next case will be. SOLEX is a power-generating station that is dangerously close to the sun. Someone on the station is a murderer who cuts the head and hands off of his victims and it's up to Lieutenant Tanner to find out who. To Tanner's surprise he learns that this case is different than any other case he has ever had. This case seems to have no motive, no connection between the people dead. This case turns out to be bigger than Tanner ever imagined and if he doesn't solve it, the whole human race could be in danger.
The Furnace is an intense locked-room murder mystery that is definitely a page turner. The story is very well written and keeps a reader on their toes and wondering who the possible killer could be. There is never a dull moment where the story drags on, the story is always moving forward and surprising a reader.
A reader will be taken into the future and feel like they are right there along side Lieutenant Tanner trying to figure out the mystery. All of the characters are well-developed and the story is written well with many turns of events that keep a reader constantly worried for Lieutenant Tanner's life. Timothy S. Johnston definitely keeps a reader's attention with this mystery/thriller plus it has a little romance on the side.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone into upbeat mystery/thriller stories. This book is a great read and is definitely not one to be missed. I will be looking forward to more great stories from Timothy S. Johnston.

"Happiness comes from within." Pg146

Author Stella Vance has boldly laid her private life out for all to read. Through several decades of confusion, suffering and soul searching she learned many of life's vital lessons on achieving a peaceful mind.
Despite living through many tragedies beginning early in her life, Stella did not sit back and wonder why; she set out to find her own truth and peace of mind. She fears no judgment from her readers, only a pressing need to help others along their own path of discovery.
This memoir is packed full of sensitive issues such as truths about the Bible, reincarnation (official heresy to Christians), past life regression therapy (pros and cons), cultural differences, eating disorders, abusive relationships and so much more.
Stella's story begins at the age of 14, in the 1970's. From there the reader is easily swept through three decades into the new millennium, when she peacefully retires. She dances us across the world with her adventures (21 countries); you will undoubtedly feel her highs and lows. Stella covers all emotions from shock to laughter, concluding her memoir with seven short reflections. I encourage all readers to submerse themselves within `Dancing with Duality.'
Stella Vance, retired teacher, now author, lecturer, workshop presenter lives with her husband.
Oddly enough I am of Stella's age and can picture each decade clearly, remembering my floundering years. With all honesty I can say her memoir has had a powerful, positive impact on my own path to a more mindful life. I have already read it twice and I am not finished yet!

"Authentic living means having the strength and the courage to remain true to yourself." Pg.145

The statement speaks the truth as both will be challenged many times throughout your life. The fact that you are interested in this book or any other of it's genre is a clear sign that deep within yourself you are not fulfilled or at peace. Think of it as taking your first steps to changing your mind, therefore changing your life.
After careful and honest reflection of your past, you must accept your responsibility for your part in it, move on taking the knowledge gained from it. To begin, set up achievable goals, reach out for guidance and with a strong, positive mind begin your journey to inner peace. There are pertinent questions in the chapter `Effective Learning' to guide you.
The unconscious mind controls 90% of our thoughts but can be reprogrammed through meditation, detachment, visualization and strengthening activities such as yoga. Researchers now realize that with concentrated effort we can physically change our brain, developing new pathways leading to positive experiences. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to reorganize its neural connections, even develop new ones. As you see the changes, you will understand that you can become a conscious creator and actually create your own reality.
"Your outer world is a direct reflection of your inner world." pg109 If you project negativity, negative experiences follow. If you become in control of your own life in a positive manner, you will attract positive people and experiences.
Michele Doucette has been seeking out and then sharing her knowledge of both secular and spiritual levels of self- discovery for over 20 years. She has written several successful books. Living on the west coast of Newfoundland, she is not only an author but a Special Education teacher, webmaster and amateur genealogist. This fact based, well researched, documented book is a good place to start your journey to becoming empowered.
I have been traveling my own journey to empowerment. It takes time, effort and definitely education to be successful. It helps to have a support group of family, friends, educators and fortunately for me, a mentor. A Highly Recommended Read.

Baghdad Er: Fifteen Minutes
Baghdad Er: Fifteen Minutes

5.0 out of 5 stars John Helman highly recommends this one, Oct. 30 2011
Ever since man began to band together to combat other bands of men for whatever reason there has been one common factor to all armies. That is how to care for those who are wounded. Unfortunately medical science has lagged far behind man's ability to cause mass casualties on opposing forces. Despite the continual playing of `catch-up' there have always been mean and women dedicated to caring for those who have been harmed in combat. It is for this reason and these people that Dr. Todd Baker has written this book.
The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have been especially burdensome to the medical services of the armed forces. This is not due to the ferocity of the campaigns, but instead to the almost personal natures of the weaponry in use, primarily the IED or Improvised Explosive Device. The injuries caused by these weapons are tragic in relation to the cost and ease of their deployment. This puts an even greater burden on medical personnel.
A major reason that these weapons of terror haven't succeeded is the dedication and ability of these very same medical personnel. Dr. Baker does an admirable job of portraying an accurate and engrossing view of the day-to-day saving of lives. In some ways Dr. Baker's descriptions of events are almost clinical which adds a stark realism to it. He wastes no adjectives to emphasize that which is in need of none.
As stated previously some descriptions appear almost clinical in their stark realism. This is not to take anything away from the story itself. It takes a true talent and lots of experience to write in this style. It's easy to open up a thesaurus or to use clichés like "it was a dark and stormy night," but to be matter of fact and still put the reader in the author's crosshairs makes this book well worth the reading.
"Baghdad E.R." is definitely highly recommended on all levels.

The Scruffy Little Crumb-Grabbers
The Scruffy Little Crumb-Grabbers

5.0 out of 5 stars Alison Griffiths highly recommends, Oct. 30 2011
Spider Man, the very fat yet adorable cat, leads a comfortable, relaxing life highlighted by the undying love and doting affections of his owner, Marcy. With the higher than healthy number of treats and toys Spider Man receives, along with his eclectic and friendly entourage of cat friends, one would think his existence to be purrfect. However, that would be just too good to be true, wouldn't it? Yes, like most things, there is a loophole in Spider Man's life, and that loophole is the infamous tragedy of... grandkids.
Unfortunately for Spider Man, Marcy is as fond of her daughter's curious, unruly little toddlers as she is of him, so consequently their visits are long ,frequent and of course of no small burden. Ruby and Frankie, who in fact gave Spider Man his disorderly name, have not yet evolved past the stage of considering cats to be something other than enticing toys to chase and tug. The little toddlers love Spider Man in their own shallow way, but that just does not comply the other way around. After all, what cat takes pleasure in being aggressively followed by a clumsy, chasing, throwing little bundle of trouble? One day however, mischievous little Ruby and Frankie find themselves in a particularly dangerous scrape, with not a soul but Spider Man to provide assistance. Will Spider Man be able to find in his character the will to save the children, though it is the last thing he wishes to do?
"The Scruffy Little Crumb-Grabbers" is a delightful little story written in an entertaining style with a seasoned, refined sense of humour. Children will instantly love and laugh at its distinct, well-developed and amusing characters while parents will find stimulation and humour in its highly relatable situations and underlying messages. This creative finalist of the Indie Excellence Book Awards, by Peggy Krause, will give any reader insight into the secret emotions and doings of cats, and will deliver a fresh, original perspective.

Healing energy of the mineral world as translated by a highly sensitive, enlightened human being will help to heal our planet and ourselves.

Michele Doucette has created a truly unique look into the world of crystals and minerals. Her goal is to teach readers how to first heal themselves and then heal planet Earth and it is this reviewer's opinion that she has done that very successfully, in this book.
Hundreds of crystals and minerals fill the chapters, each truly different from the one before as Michele first describes the stone and then provides readers with her own interpretation of the stone's message. The messages received through meditation are insightful, spiritual and eye opening. This is not a book to sit and read in one sitting, but a book that you will return to day after day as you absorb the deep messages within. Join Michele in an illuminating, self-fulfilling journey.
Do you have to go out and buy all of the crystals yourself? No, simply read the meditations to receive the message. If you are inclined to investigate crystals further after reading this book, I would highly recommend another book by this author, The Wisdom of Crystals.

Michele Doucette lives in Newfoundland, Canada. She is the author of several spiritual/inspirational books including The Wisdom of Crystals. For more on this author visit her website Portals of Spirit.

You Are Everything: Everything Is You
by Michele Doucette
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars An important Message, Sept. 24 2011
You are Everything Everything is You is a compilation of the works of several spiritual authors. Michele Doucette is an excellent researcher as is reflected in the complex content and unique perspectives covered in this book.
The works of Gregg Braden, Paul J. Steinhardt, physicist, Anthony Duchene, Michael Sky, Dr. Masaru Emoto and dozens of others are included in this work. Although convincing evidence, the text seems tedious and repetitious at times, however the message is the same throughout, "You are everything and everything is you!"
I do not think new explorers of spirituality will find this book helpful as it is too advanced in information and thinking, and would suggest it is more for the advanced seekers of enlightenment.
Michele Doucette lives in Newfoundland, Canada. She is the author of several books She is an avid researcher who is very worried about the radioactivity that is leaking into the ocean and air from the Fukushima reactor. She feels the earth is in great turmoil both naturally and with man's obsession with war and greed. This book was written to inform and awaken the masses.

Egypt: The Uprising: The Battle for Maat
Egypt: The Uprising: The Battle for Maat
by Amira Aly
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 9.21

5.0 out of 5 stars Yuke Man of Allbooks Review highly recommends this, Aug. 5 2011
This first of a multi-volume series has everything from actual modern day political events to an incredibly interesting dose of fantasy and science fiction. This is also a fable for the Egyptian mythology buff to dive into. Its extensive details literally transport you into ancient Egypt and to present day historic sites which range from the Sphinx to Luxor in modern day Egypt. The author, Amira Aly, who is trained as a medical doctor, but is now a freelance writer and editor, has done extensive research in Egyptology and has created this informative and thrilling epic.

"Egypt: The Uprising" begins with real life events: the uprising in Egypt on January 25, 2011, at the Liberation Tahrir Square against the autocratic rule of the 82 year old President Saye Mubasher and the looting of an ancient relic from the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. There is something for everyone here: romance, jealousy, revenge, post-apocalyptic scenarios, good versus evil, mythical creatures, a seeing blind man, and much more.

The best part is that readers can easily identify with the main character, Aya, an unassuming down to earth ordinary present-day media savvy youth (a regular schmuck, according to the author) whose main concern is to protect her twin brother. Little did she know that in doing this everyday task of watching over her weaker twin, she somehow "summons the other world" and becomes unwittingly involved in finding the stolen ancient relic which is the key to deactivating the doomsday device that will end the world. You have to read it to find out how that is possible. In the process, you are in for the ride of your life.

This high tech eBook has Aya writing to her readers through blogging and other modern social media platforms. Even Maat, the ancient Egyptian Goddess of Justice and Order, is high tech. She communicates through instant messaging, preferring it to the "more complicated and unorthodox way".

The author, herself an Egyptian, living in Cairo, Egypt, writes in such an
intimate and conversational way that she makes this tale easy and enjoyable to read. The
question here is, is Aya's still missing mother who is an anthropologist, somehow related
to Nour, the romance in Aya's life? Could he be her half-brother since Nour has an
Egyptian mother and his father is also somehow entangled in this bid to save the world?
Well, we will know soon since Book Two is in the process of being written.
