5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read on truly becoming healthy!, Jan 25 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Primal Body Primal Mind was an absolutely incredible read and an eye-opener helping to dispell tons of nutritional and dietary myths. Discovering that most often what we consider healthy - think whole wheat, cereal grains, fruits, breads, pastas, low fat foods (even some, if not most vegetables) are NOT healthy whatsoever, and the stuff we consider unhealthy - red meat, saturated fats, cholesterol, is in fact not only good for us, but helps fuel our body's, brain and organs to an optimal level.

By going into our evolutionary past, Nora brings up the eating habits of our paleolithic ancestors and explains how the human race evolved. It wasn't from farming practices or eating tons of starches or sugars like we do today, but by hunting wild game and eating a lot of fat and moderate proteins.

None of the diseases that we have today - cancer, diabetes, alzheimers, ADD and autism existed in such epidemic amounts until recently. And this has not only to do with our lifestyle, but especially our eating habits that are destroying us from the inside out by completely disregulating and throwing off our hormone and blood sugar levels.

This depletes our adrenal gland functions, can throw our thyroids out of whack, and cause severe mood and emotional swings making us susceptible to stress, anxiety and depression at a level unheard of.

What I found to be most shocking, especially to those who are parents or who are going to be soon, is that she explains the concept of Pottenger's in which a generation subsisting on processed, nutrient-depleted foods will inevitably pass on genetic weaknesses and immune system disorder to their children, and so on and so forth.

So, not only do we as individuals depend on learning and LIVING by this knowledge, but the future of our children and their children's health depend on the choices we make today.

Suffice to say, I've altered my eating habits based upon Nora Gedgaudus' recommendations and I am not looking back.

The Narcissistic Family: Diagnosis and Treatment
The Narcissistic Family: Diagnosis and Treatment

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read., Dec 15 2012
The Narcissistic Family is just an incredible resource filled with knowledge, first-hand experience, practical exercises and pitfall-avoidance for those seeking to overcome their childhood and trauma's and live a more integrated life.

Each chapter deal's with a specific issue or consequence of growing up in a narcissistic household and how that affect's the behaviour and thinking of the person in question suffering from malaise of the mind and emotions. The two author's describe narcissism in a family dynamic as; a parent-system that puts its own wants and needs above that of the child causing all sorts of emotional and behavioural complications in the child who tries so desperately to meet the demands of the parent but fails to meet and understand their own wants, needs and emotions.

This can cause fragmentation in the personality and turn kids into people-pleasers or emotionally isolated individuals who don't know how to meet their own wants and needs in a healthy way, often holding in their own frustration and built-up emotions like dams stuck in this constant mode of to reliving the parent-child dynamic of their youth.

Not only does each chapter deal with the consequences of certain dynamics in real-life case studies, but also provides incredibly powerful yet simple exercises and advice that can help people work through their internal struggles and learn to heal the emotional wounds that subconsciously dictate our behaviour.

To paraphrase the author's in one of the last chapter's - to find the hidden treasure inside that is essentially you.

The Myth of Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness
The Myth of Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!, Dec 14 2012
Myth of Sanity represent's one of the first books I ever came across dealing with trauma, dissociation and fragmented consciousness. She speak's to us all by telling the story of the common Dissociative Identity Disorder individual who 'check's out' when certain stresses or situations occur. By dissociating and being adsent-minded, dozing off into daydreaming, or flipping a switch to someone different then who we normally are, Martha Stout show's us that these are all fairly common defense mechanisms that take us away from conscious, present and aware engagement in life and causes us to give our freedom and ability to choose over to automatic behavioural traits that are quite separate from the conscious mind.

Following this journey with Martha, she show's us real-life examples of client's who have battled with these very same issues and who come back from the brink of dullness and non-existence to reclaiming their lives and mind back by learning to overcome these automatic responses to past trauma's and slowly integrating themselves back into 'wholer' people that are able to act, respond and live a more vivid, enriching life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, Dec 8 2012
This review is from: The Noah Syndrome (Kindle Edition)
I found this book to be really fascinating. The author really pull's a lot of information together regarding biblical prophecies of end times and really weaves together what the deeper meanings and symbolism's are pertaining to these predictions. Did people of ages past have insights and abilities that allowed them to foresee the future? And if so, how were those future events interpretated based on their level of understanding?

Piecing together fragments of different prophecies from the Bible, Book of Revelations, Edgar Cayce and Nostradamus, Laura Knight-Jadczyk weaves together a journey into what these books and prophets were trying to say beyond the literal meaning's expounded by theologians. Is 'the beast' really a beast, or was that Johns' method of interpretating something else? Her insights show that to mean the United States and that the mark and stamp of the beast pertains to the materialistic ideology expounded by it that has permeated much of the globe.

And how does the study of quantum probabilities play into all this. Are predictions set in stone or do we, as human beings play some role in either fulfilling or changing the course of our collective and individual lives away from total destruction and on a different path that will mitigate these catastrophes that are already starting to happen on the planet.

Even though this book was written almost 30 years ago and only recently published, I am completely amazed at how accurate much of what was written in Noah Syndrome is actually coming to pass right now at this very moment. And last but not least, she has taken topics deal with the Bible, and different scientific modalities and has done an amazing job of putting it together for the layperson like myself to understand and follow quite well.

I don't think it matter's if you are Christian, Jewish, Hindu, religious, non-religious, etc, this book has something to say to anyone who has a conscience and is concerned for their fellow wo(man), the state of the world, and where we are headed in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential read for those interested in Low Carb/High Fat living!, Aug 22 2012
Thanks to Dr's Phinney and Volek for writing this book. A groundbreaking book that explains in great detail why Low Carbohydrate and High fat (Eee-gads!) diets are not only healthy, but from a blood-sugar and metabolic level, much healthier for us in the long run.

They let go of the stigma that has saturated (no pun intended) nutritional and medical media, that high fat foods are bad for us, and instead give us science, evidence and explanations as to why that isn't the case. Not only that, but for the bold adventurer willing to touch their feet into this type of diet, they also provide essential information as to avoid dangers and pitfalls and make the metabolic transition as smooth as possible.

They also go the extra steps to explain why carb intake, on a large scale is not only dangerous, but possibly the cause of many diseases and ailments affecting millions of North Americans. What's so shocking, is that this knowledge has been known in the medical community for a long time, with a multitude of scientists proving the efficacy of this type of diet, but there has been a staunch refusal to accept this line of research and re-think the dietary guidelines that are currently destroying so many people's health.

Whether that's because of ignorance, arrogance or conscious deception, or a mix of all three, I can't say.

What I can say, as someone who has cut down my carbohydrate intake drastically and shifted over to nutritional ketosis, I've found their insights invaluable in helping me maintain a high level of energy and well-being while doing so. So many of my health issues, like constant gas/bloating, as well as never-ending headaches and neck/joint pains have ceased, and I can attribute that change to the shift in diet away from carbs and towards fat.

Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival
Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lights are on!, Jun 14 2012
Not sure why some reviews indicated this book was hard to read. On the contrary, I found T.S. Wiley's approach to writing this book highly informative and full of humour. Her wit and ability to explain some of the more complex topics using metaphors and analogies made understanding the effects of excess sugars and artificial lights on our biological systems easy to understand.

Often times, books dealing with topics of nutrition, health and biology can be a bit dry and boring - but not Lights Out!

I've given it a shot, following her methods in the book about following our biological clocks and attuning ourselves back to the circadian rhythm of the planet - blocking out all light at night and EVEN getting to bed earlier than I'm used to. Goodbye 3am - 9am sleeping, hello 10pm - 6am, and I have noticed a difference in my overall disposition. A bit more calmer, not as edgey as I used to be, and the constant burning sensation when blinking has minimized too.

I don't think I could ever go back to my old sleeping habits with all the outside lights and blinking digital toys in my bedroom anymore.

Trapped In T Mirror
Trapped In T Mirror

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Look in the Mirror, Jun 4 2012
This review is from: Trapped In T Mirror (Paperback)
Elan Golomb has put together a book worthy of it's name, as one truly feel's like they are seeing a reflection of many parts of themselves and family dynamics when reading Trapped in the Mirror. Confronting the topic of Narcissism, she not only pieces together the process by which it takes hold in a family and passes down from generation to generation, but also gives us real life examples from her own life as well as many of her patients which will undoubtedly lead many readers to relate to the struggles faced by children of narcissists's.

She explains, quite succinctly, what narcissism truly is, and how pervasive it is in our family and cultural life. She brings home the main point of how we not only objectify ourselves in the hopes of pleasing our parents and the negative introject (the inner critic which develops due to the affects of a narcissistic household). She also explains how this process causes us to lose touch with our true, inner core early on in childhood. This has an incredible effect on the choices we make, and people we become later on life.

Not only do we objectify ourselves, we objectify our family and children, and start to see them not as they are, but as we want them to be, discarding their essential selves in exchange for a cardboard cut-out of what we want them to be.

An insightful book, full of depth, Elan Golomb provides an excellent resource into the inner-working of our childhood and provides way's of combating the imprinting that has occurred due to the often traumatizing effects of growing up in a narcissistic environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone wanting to improve their health, May 19 2012
Life Without Bread is probably the easiest to read of the detailed dietary guideline books I have ever come across. Not only do the authors provide an excellent argument with studies, data and testing to back up their claims of a low carbohydrate-high fat/protein diet as being the ideal diet to maintain optimal health and nutrition, but also give us a straightforward explanation of the inner workings of our bodies and metabolism and how they function. Furthermore, they explain where and how breakdowns occur in health causing so many different maladies; from diabetes to cancer.

We see, through Dr. Lutz' medical practice how often and regularly patients would reverse the onset of obesity, high blood pressure, insulin levels, etc just by altering the amounts of fat, protein and carbs they eat on a daily basis.

Also, the transition from a high carb/sugar diet to one rich in proteins in fat can tax the body initially, depending on a persons age and their current state of health. The ending of this book provides key notes on how to make this change of having your body operating on different energy requirements invaluable when I made the change-over to low carb.

My only concerns were the authors don't discuss the dangers of what some carbs have in it, outside of the insulin factor, namely wheat and dairy, which contain gluten and casein. They also never get into the differences between grass-fed/pasture raised animal meats as opposed to factory farmed meat.

But beyond that, this book was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable to read and understand. An amazing addition to anyone's list of books to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A trailblazing book, May 11 2012
Even though this book is called the 'Vegetarian Myth', and it's focus was to dispell the strongly held beliefs that veganism is healthy and can save the planet, which if you read the book, clearly shows does neither, we are also given a detailed account of how our food is manufactured in an agriculturally based society.

In North America, we have all grown up with the image of the wheat/corn fields in the rural countryside as being the backbone of society, providing the rest of the population with food. But what she shows throughout the book is the highly destructive process behind agriculture and how it runs in complete opposition to bio-diversity and creating sustainable self-sufficient environments that promotes life at all levels from the small microbial/bacterial, to plants/trees, to animals of all shapes and sizes.

Also chronicling her battles with health while living as a vegan for 20 years, she explains quite succintly what human beings evolved to eat through millions of years as hunter-gatherers, which agriculture has turned against, causing so many health problems because of it.

This book is packed with data that has solidified many dietary and principled choices on who and where I purchase food from in order to support our planet. I highly recommend this book. A definite page turner!
