great movie with a twisting plot, Jun 20 2004
I really love the movie because of the great atmosphere it has and all those charismatic actors (I do think Rikki Lake did a great job too). Especially the end was great and resolved in a satisfying way. The only thing I don't understand at all (besides the fact that the real Patricia Winterbourne seemed to be travelling without a passport or any document that could identify her) is why does Grace state she killed Steve, although she did not know who Steve was, nor what Patricia (aka Connie) had to do with him? It was just so irrational to do that. All in all a great movie with a few weak points in the script.

this is NOT a kid's movie, April 17 2004
As I see, some people think this movie is not appropriate for children because of some cruelty. First of all, I wouldn't let children under eight watch ANY Disney blockbuster anyway. They're at some point all too scary for younger children, no matter what the rating says. However, regarding Brother Bear, I must say that they've been very clever with the plot. The older Brother didn't get killed by the bear - as some other reviews imply - he risks his life to save his brothers, since the bear seems to attack them. His death is tragic, but not caused by anyone but himself. Kenai then takes revenge for his brother's death by killing the bear. But since he did not have the right to do that his dead brother, who is now among the spirits of their ancestors, transforms him into a bear. This movie is a beautiful piece of art, the animation is absolutely beautiful and they even managed to lighten up the difficult main story line by adding some unusual sidekicks without ruining the drama, like the moose, which are really great fun despite being totally different to former fun characters like Timon and Pumbaa. Another point that really fascinated me - and which makes this film different to earlier Disney movies - is that there is no bad guy. Kenai's brother who hunts him is no villain at all. From his point of view his actions are completely understandable. The only bad thing done is Kenai's killing the bear, but I wouldn't judge him either. I'm afraid many people would not have let wisdom lead their ways in his situation. So it's not about fighting a bad guy, it's about learning from your mistakes. I honestly didn't assume Disney would ever release a movie with such a deep and honest meaning. All in all, it's a first class movie, which should not be shown to young children. Even adults are crying in the end, so don't expect you children will get over it easily. Animation does NOT equal kid's movie!

5 stars for the movie - not the disc, April 3 2004
Okay, I don't need to repeat what has already been said. It's not a movie for little kids, but it's a wonderful piece of animated art that is a refreshing new way of telling a story - I mean you can tell from beginning to end that this is not a Disney movie (not that Disney isn't good, I just think they shouldn't dominate the world of animated art alone). I was 8 when I first saw it and now I still love with all my heart. So I was really happy to finally get it on dvd. However, the format is 4:3 - no Widescreen (!) and there is no Dolby Digital 5.1 track on that disc. Am I too spoiled by watching Disney DVDs or does MGM just don't care about the movies they put on dvd? It's the same with The Secret of Nimh. They should be ashamed to decrease the viewing pleasure of their customers like that! 0 stars for MGM

The movie is great, and so is the DVD, Feb 4 2004
I know there are some bad reviews about this DVD, which worried me at first, but since I wanted that wonderful movie to be part of my Disney DVD collection I took that risk - and I was NOT disappointed. The sound is very good - but I don't have a Home Cinema Set, so I may not be able to enjoy the DVDs full potential. The video is done very well too. I did not encounter any of the mentioned defects, such as grainy frames or bad colors. There's just one thing about the video that I don't fully understand. They claim to have put the movie in it's original theater ratio, but on my tv the black lines on top and bottom of the screen are not as big as on other Disney DVDs such as Hunchback of Notre Dame or The Lion King. So either they produced Pocahontas slightly differently or they changed the format to some extent. Anyway, there's not even one frame where you think they cut something off, so I guess it's alright the way it is. I am no expert, but the movie was great pleasure to watch. Another plus about this DVD is the bonus material. There are two music videos (Colors of the Wind - by Vanessa Williams and If I never knew you by Jon Secada and Shanice). I had never seen them before so I was pleased they put them on there. In addition to that there's the original trailer and a small quiz about the movie - this is not even worth mentioning, since they put such -dare I say silly- games on EVERY single one of their DVDs. However, a very charming extra is an animated story book where the story of the movie is read to you. Sure, it doesn't have to be on the DVD since you could watch as well the movie instead. Fact is, that the narrator (a woman, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be Pocahontas' voice) has such a lovely way of reading that you can't stop listening to her. I really enjoyed that! I hope my review helped clear up some of the things that have been said in other reviews. According to my experience, the DVD itself is absolutely alright. Maybe some players are having troubles with it, but it worked fine for me.

The Lion King still rules, Dec 25 2003
I guess I don't have to mention that the movie itself is great. The animation, the story line, the characters, everything is first class. With the Lion King Disney has set high standards for their movies to come. However, this DVD is really great, too. The main menu is so wonderfully done. It's amazing how much stuff they can put on a dvd. There are tons of behind the scene interviews, although they're seperated into various clips, which requires real interest in the matter to watch them all. The DVD also contains many other extras I truly enjoyed such a movie posters from all over the world, a language reel, information on the background of the story, and so on. However, I do not just want to praise it. There are things they could have made better. For example, there are 2 versions of the movie on the disc, the new special edition movie featuring a new scene, and the original release. It took me quite some time to figure out how to chose which one to take. For those who still don't know it, you need to go to the language menu to select the language AND the movie (Special Edition of Original Release). That's not quite logical, the best thing would have been to put that option into the Set Up menu. Whether the new scene, morning report was good, remains on your own taste. Personally, I liked it better when Zazu was kind of confused at being the pray for target practice, instead of having him singing when suddenly Simba catches him. The song Morning Report is really short, but not bad I guess. It's hard for me to say if it's good or not, because I need to listen to songs more often to really like or dislike them, but let's put it that way, if they had used that scene right from the beginning back in 1994 I wouldn't complain. It fits in perfectly well, from an animators point of view. Another point is, the character resembling game and Timon's catch the bug game are pretty silly. Even little kids get tired of them after some minutes. The safari on Disc two is quite funny, though. To sum it up, the DVD is great, there are just small things I may complain about, but they're no big deal. This is still the best way to enjoy The Lion King in perfect quality at home. I can only recommend this item.

The word that describes it best is .....strange, Feb 16 2002
Sure, I like Tate Donovan and I like Sandra Bullock, but the plot of this movie doesn't make sense to me and has a happy end that is way too plain. Sorry, but I don't recommend this movie.

Best Menken music ever, Dec 14 2001
The title says everything. Hercules features the most wonderful music you can imagine. Even The Little Mermaid can't top Hercules!
