5.0 out of 5 stars THRILLING, Feb. 23 2002
This review is from: Turandot Comp (Audio CD)
This features an extraordinary recording of Turandot...one of the best available.
All the interpreters are at their prime.
Scotto is a very fragile Liu singing beautifully and emotionally.
Corelli is outstanding!! This is surely one of his best recordings.
Nillson will always remain the Turandot of reference. She is really a princess of Ice at 1st and then melts in the last scene...amazing!!
About the EMI release...I was extremely disappointed. Be sure to own your libretto before buying this CD otherwise you will only get an italian libretto with no translations. However, each act is divided into so many tracks so that you can choose any part of the recording...for everybody's conveniance.
Overall...despite libretto problems...This recording Is A MUST...and not only to Nillson and Corelli's fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alive!, Feb. 14 2002
The two opera twins have come alive with this magnificient Franco Zeffirelli production. I think that "amazing" is the only words that can actually describe them. From beginning to end, it is a series of wonderful extraordinary sets. (you should see them especially in Cavalleria Rusticana...incredible).
Well...Ok...Zeffirelli amazes us! But that's not all...The singers.....better than the amazing set.
The Leader is Placido Domingo. As in a lot of his opera movies he sings greatly. And since I mentioned that this is an opera movie, I should give this great tenor credits for his acting. Better than a real hollywood actor. He gives the two caracters (especially Canio) their real domensions like no one has never done. Domingo is more powerful than Bergonzi and more passionate than Del Monaco (other 2 expetional Canios). This tenor is a miracle!
Next comes stratas (Nedda). Well...honestly her voice wasn't always very clear..sometimes too low...but again a great sensational actress with a gorgeous vocie...bravo!
Renato Bruson is also a very good virile Alfio.
I did not love santuzza...I think others might have been better..
On the top of all this list comes George Pretre! He conducts La Scala's orchestra like a master..(he IS a master).
One distracting thing that I have to note in Pagliacci. The public supposed to view the scene in the 2nd act is always chattering...probably wanted by the director to show realism..but I have to admit it IS quite annoying!
Believe me, when Pagliacci will end (with the "la commedia e finita" given back to Tonio (juan Pons who is very very good by the way)) you will be shouting like the rest of the people inside the opera.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

OTELLO (Verdi)
OTELLO (Verdi)

5.0 out of 5 stars A very noble recording!, Feb. 9 2002
This review is from: OTELLO (Verdi) (Audio CD)
I find this set to be the most noble Otello on record. Even though recorded in 1961 the sound quality is excellent!
Otello is about passion, hatred, rage and jealousy! The conductor should be able to show all these elements and makes us feel them...I don't think serafin managed to do all this. He choosed slow movements and tempis and made this recording...about 20 minutes more than Toscanini's which is the ultimate reference.
However this set won't lack interest at all..and this mainly for two reasons: Tito Gobbi and Jon Vickers.
Gobbi is the perfect Iago and it is here that you will find him at his best. He doesn't sing in a mean ugly voice (too many Iagos do!) but with a malignant intelligent one...light in times and dark in others pushing Otello to his outrage! Splendid.
Vickers IS the most noble Otello of all times. With his big voice plenty of passion he delivers here the best Otello on record. And as Domingo fan, it is difficult for me to admit that Vickers is better than him. I find Domingo's voice much more beautiful and is a much better actor but Vickers' is more suitable and he sings Verdi's notes entirely! The other definitive Otello is Del Monaco with the most powerful voice ever. But Del Monaco's powerful voice screws in the ligh passages.
Rysanek is a beautiful Desdemona. An excellent actress (just like Gobbi).
There are 4 excellent Otello recordings. (Levine RCA, Karajan DECCA, Serafin RCA (this one) and Toscanini).

This one is a MUST.
Buy it at least for Vickers and Gobbi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Feb. 8 2002
This review is from: Puccini: La Bohème (Audio CD)
YES.
Finally a great performance with great sound quality. This DECCA recording has it all. Perfect sound and amazing cast.
And what a cast!!
Pavarotti makes here (with some other Donizetti operas on record) one of his BEST performances ever. The voice shines! It is clear with beautiful ringing and healthy high notes.
I loved Freni. She delivers here a very wonderful sick and vulnerable mimi. Along with De Los Angeles, she made history of her performance here as mimi.
I cannot forget the very precious performance of Ghiaurov! Bravo.
And Karajan's recording...amazing (But I think comes second place after Beecham).
Well...nothing goes bad in this performance...on the contrary...it is just Perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars I join the praise, Feb. 7 2002
This review is from: Puccini: Tosca (Audio CD)
It is bizzarre to see how opera fans react to a Callas recording...specially this one. Well, I am not a big fan of her but, I have to admit This IS a great recording.
I am sure that almost all the 1 star reviewers didn't even listen to this recording but only judged it because of Callas. Where is the "Screaming"? All I can see in Callas' voice is passion, devotion, jalousy and fear or to be more clear, all I can see is a perfect Tosca totally in the role and getting along with, let's not forget, a verismo character. Yes, she doesn't have that wonderful Tebaldi voice (or such an amazing voice as Sutherland), but she is Totally and beatifully commited to her role in THIS RECORDING.
Gobbi as Scarpia is great. I think that NO ONE will ever beat him in this role. Again, there is such a great commitment and understanding to the role, showing clearly sadicism and anger at times and all this accompanied by a great voice.
Di Stefano was in a very good day. Our lyric tenor fits totally in this dramatic role. He delivers an unequal 1st act.
I like De Sabata. However the mono recording doesn't help a lot. But it is well remastered and more than acceptable sound quality.
This IS a necessary recording.
I recommend this Tosca! Go for it.
