4.0 out of 5 stars Good book about colonial women, Jan. 21 2004
I am very interested in finding out about colonial American women. This book didn't disappoint as far as facts. The author takes great pains to mention as much as she can about the women she's writing about. My only quibble with the book would be sometimes when the author introduces some facts, she would just leave the facts hanging there. There would be interesting tibits mentioned about a particular woman, then that tibit would be left and the author would go one to discuss something else.
Still, overall this book is very enlightening about how women lived back in colonial times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what you will be expecting, Oct. 6 2002
I originally bought this book hoping to learn more about the so-called "poison widows." What I got was a book that devotes more than two thirds of its pages to the trial. There is alot of extra info about the lawyers in this case that I really didn't think helped the flow of this book.
The author only briefly delves into what life was like back in the early part of the century. There is even briefer mention about the women's lives. You are told in passing that some of the men beat their wives, for instance.
The main portion of the book, the trial, isn't told very well either. I understand that there were alot of women that went to trial, but most of them get a few pages. Two of the trial lawyers get more coverage than most of these women.
Overall, more of a general synopsis of what happened than anything with real depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, engrossing book!!, Sept. 15 2002
I normally don't read true crime books, so I initially hesitated about reading this one. I am so glad I ended up reading this! The author does an amazing job of bringing the different stories of the different people together. You really feel for Lynne Sposito as she tries to find out who murdered her parents, and why. It's amazing how many people were involved with the crime, whether actually participating, or being involved with the coverup.
You will never look at police investigations the same way again after reading this book.
A must read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but..., June 6 2002
While I like that she uses alot of fresh ingredients, I would have greatly appreciated it if the receipes included the dried/canned equivalent. I don't necessarily have the time to go out and buy fresh sage.
I also would've liked pictures to go with the receipes, so I had more of an idea of what I was getting into.
Still, it's nice to have a cook book that gives such a variety of receipes for the single cook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange, yet still good cd, June 6 2002
This review is from: Cornerstone (Audio CD)
For me, this is one of the more strange Styx CDs. I was surprised to listen to the song Love in the midnight from Tommy Shaw. Still, somehow this cd works. Boat on the river is a good acoustic sounding song. I also like Lights, if for no other reason than it's not a song that sounds like anything else. The weakest song on the cd for me is also Styx' biggest hit, Babe. I think Dennis DeYoung has had much better ballads before and after this cd, yet somehow this is the one that became their biggest hit.
Still, if you're a Styx fan, you should get this cd.

Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony
Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recounting of many important women, May 31 2002
This book fills a glaring need in history books. Not many people know more about Susan B. Anthony than she was one the dollar coin. This book corrects that oversight, and then some. Not only does the book give a balanced and well thought out look at Anthony and Stanton, the reader is also introduced to many, many other women who worked so hard for women rights.
I especially liked that the book didn't shy away from some of these women's more controversial stands, such as taking on the black person's cause.
All in all, a very good book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really a biography, May 22 2002
This would be an ok book if you were looking for a novel about Maria Mitchell. However, it's supposed to be a biography, and in that sense it falls short. There are too many paragraphs and pages of the author assuming what Maria Mitchell is thinking. "As she sat next to the fire, she thought of her father and how hard her life was growing up." Things of that nature. I found myself wishing for less speculation and more facts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good CD for the genre, May 20 2002
This review is from: Fugitive (Audio CD)
This CD mostly evokes the excitement of the movie. While there are a few songs that aren't memorable, most of them are up-tempo songs that really capture the spirit of the movie.
Really good CD to put in and get energy from to get moving for your day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moderately good book but..., May 20 2002
The authors of this book had some interesting choices of women for their most important. That's fine, "most important" is a pretty subjective term anyways. What bothered me was the short shrift this book seemed to give many of these women. If you read the brief blurb on Eleanor Roosevelt, you'll come away thinking she was nice to black people. This book doesn't give you enough details to explain why these women are so extraordinary.
Still, the book introduces many women of the 20th century that readers would probably not have heard of before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Once past the first chapter, really great book!, May 9 2002
I really liked the perspective of looking at Van Gogh from a psychological view point. However, the first chapter is very dense with names of paintings and their deeper meaning. The author does much better in the subsequent chapters trying to discover Vincent the man.
A must read for anyone trying to understand Van Gogh!
