It`s a classic book - and you can hardly add anything to it. Though it`s a little dated, it`s still worth reading.

It`s a pretty clear and informative Italian course for beginners - a good combination of basic grammar and useful vocabulary. Though it`s still better to use some audio course I would still recommend this one.

An amazing book!, April 23 2002
It`s just whatever you need to know about modern Italy and its inhabitants. By the wideness of the topics and the depth of their discussion the book can be comparable with Luigi Barzini`s classic - though, it`s written by a non-Italian. It`s not only descriptive but also funny - you will love the book!

The best beginner Italian course I ever saw!, April 23 2002
I wonder why no one rated this course yet - because it`s splendid! Clear explanations, all the needed basic vocabulary, interactive written and oral excersises - this book will make you speak Italian from the first chapters! I just love the activity "Your turn" which requires your ability to use all the new grammar and vocabulary from the chapter to build conversational phrases. You can also always look up or listen to the answers to the questions to make sure you answered them right. The other good thing is that all the recording was made by native Italians which can really help you with pronauncation. There is only one disadvantage: sometimes answering to the questions requires just a little vocabulary not known to you yet - though, it`s always a good idea to keep your dictionary close to you when learning a foreign language, isn`t it?

A good value for tourists, April 23 2002
Well, that`s a good enough course you can get for this small money. In fact, if you need to learn just some basic "tourist Italian" this course is quite fine - but not if you really want to speak it. The thing is, it seems hard to obtain any real conversational skills just by memorizing phrases. Also, the recording doesn`t always correspond to the book.
