Deja Vue, Nov 26 2006
Did I just get out of a time machine? David Crosby is the artist who captured the essence of the pervading spirit of positivism in the late 60's and early 70's. He continues to carry the torch today. This isn't a good album...it's totally brilliant. The compilation portraits the extraordinary musicianship of David Crosby through his entire career from his early days with The Byrds, through the CSN years and the solo albums. If I Could Only Remember My Name is his personal masterpiece and it's forthcoming release in remastered form is eagerly anticipated! Unmistakeable guitar and the soaring voice, the incredible harmonies...this is a revealing look at the force behind Crosby Stills Nash and Young. It is warm music, pure genius and refreshingly genuine. This is a true desert island disc!

Who said that?, Nov 12 2006
This book is fun! It contains an incredible number of famous quotations that are found in other, more lengthy publications, but it also includes modern quotations from such icons as Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and Steven Spielberg. If you enjoy browsing through famous quotations then this is a must. (For example: who wrote "this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius?"). Entirely addictive reading.

U-cover electronic brilliance, Oct 23 2006
This is a gem for those who like "ambient electronica." It's produced by the people at U-cover records in Belgium, www.u-cover.com for info. It's a beautifully balanced work, sometimes dark, other times bright. Other CD's in the same genre include "Where have you been? What have you done? And why?" the sampler by Ontayso, Sense and Tim Koch, and the simply amazing "Volleyed Iron" by Kettel. I like all kinds of interesting music, but when I am working at home this is pretty hard to beat. I'd also recommend Tim Koch's "Islandtones," and anything by Eno, especially his "Music for Films" or "Apollo" which he wrote and performed with Daniel Lanois, to accompany the film about the lunar landings.

Extraordinary, Aug 30 2006
Bob Dylan demonstrates, again, an artist in full control of his art. This is a wonderful album...it is a true oasis in the world of cover versions and imitations. Dylan reminds us that he is the master of songwriting. The album is a treasure and a timely reminder that songs based on real life are going to touch the heart. Only he can create an old feel over and over again without losing startling originality. This is the work of a genius...and we can only listen and say "thankyou." It's marvellous. An absolute must...I wish I could say "thankyou" to Dylan in person.

Audioquest...best compilations, Jun 12 2006
Audioquest has done it again...this, along with "Jazz Masters" and the three CD's in the "Works Of Art" series are fabulous compilations of modern blues and jazz glitterati at their best. If you are not familiar with the likes of Bruce Katz, Mokave, Ronnie Earl or the Mighty Sam McClain, these are the CD's to own. They stand alone as a tribute to modern progressive blues and jazz. A must for any collection.

Disappointed loyal fan!, Jun 3 2006
This CD is a reunion of the House of Love, one of the most magically brilliant, and unlucky, guitar bands of the 1980's UK rock scene. Personal difficulties precipitated their breakup after making a groundbreaking album (the "butterfly album", called, simply, "The House Of Love"...if you see this one: buy it!!). A series of reissues followed containing many gems, like the beautiful "Girl With The Loneliest Eyes" from "Babe Rainbow." This CD listens like a harsh attempt to recapture the smooth skill of their heyday, but, apart from "Already Gone" it is only mediocre, in spite of the fact that I was willing it to be brilliant when I first listened to it. The bonus tracks...live performances of two of their classics: "Shine On" and "I Don't Know Why I Love You," lack the essential sound and Guy Chadwick seems to have difficulty carrying the tunes. It is, I am afraid, a testament to their struggle to get back what they had once and then lost. But I still believe and I will probably buy the next album, if there is one. Their brilliance can be enjoyed to the full on their excellent 2-CD compilation: "The House Of Love, The Fontana Years."

Kinks Klassic, May 27 2006
This is a lovely collection with just one flaw by omission. The 1986 CD of the same name included the beautiful "Celluloid Heroes" and "Heart of Gold" and I can't imagine why these were left off this collection. But it's all great stuff by one of Britains best exports. A must have in any serious CD collection.

A beautiful CD!, May 22 2006
It's one of the shames of the century that this marvellous guitar group from the UK couldn't wrestle with their lack of confidence. What we have here is a wonderful, rich, textured and intelligent collection that will surely satisfy the appetite of any fan of guitar music. The House of Love should have been the number one group of the eighties and nineties, but it was not to be. Interpersonal wrangles and poor management saw to their premature demise. But their influence is still to be heard in many modern bands. This is truly a treasure and a must have in any serious CD collection. If you've never heard this band before...get this CD. It's that good.

Fractals...stand aside for the real world, May 7 2006
This is an extraordinary look at the world around us. Nothing in the natural world looks the same after watching this progarm. Is the real world really made up of pixels and fractals? The arguments are intellectually compelling. The humour in calling the tiniest particle in this "grainy" universe as the "Planck Length" is a testament to the brilliance of Steven Hawking...surely someone who embodies all that is great about being human. Watch this DVD...you'll never look at the world in the same way again.

Marine biology instructor, April 11 2006
This is a wonderful photographic guide to the marine life to be found on the Pacific coastline from Point Conception, California to the Aleutian Islands. My marine biology students carry this book with them on their field trips to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on Vancouver Island and it is invaluable. Am expansion of the briiliant "Tidepool and Reef" this book includes additional sections on the fishes and marine mammals. The photographs are brilliant and accompanied by the taxonomic name and ecological niche of each specimen.Recommended for professionals and tidepoolers alike.
