4.0 out of 5 stars Better than remembered, July 3 2004
This review is from: Wake Island (DVD)
Saw this long ago on TV. We had no Saturday morning cartoons then, only seemingly endlessly repeated WWII movies. This DVD isn't bad at all. Yes, we have all the cliché military and civilian types we're supposed to have in movies of this sort. Yes, we have some VERY well done camera work also. William Bendix and Brian Donlevy great. Worth a look, not "Zulu" but worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars *The* Batman movie, Oct. 5 2003
Fun! Nostalgia! Lee Meriwether! A great latin lover with greasepaint caked on top of his moustache! A tour of the Batmobile! Dynamite commentary by Adam West and Burt Ward! A vision of the Dynamic Duo untouched by Burton and Schumacher! You can't go wrong!

4.0 out of 5 stars OK Evening's Entertainment, May 4 2003
Fun to see Mike Mazurky, Henry Wilcoxon, and George Raft in bit parts. Fun to see Robert Saachi do a spot-on impersonation of Bogart. The best unplanned fun is viewing the cheesy 70s TV-movie values that add to the nostalgia of the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, Feb. 14 2003
The online movie reviews are what first attracted me to this film. They're still accessible. It certainly was worth the wait for "Brotherhood..." to open in only three distant theaters in my area last January. Have been waiting for the DVD ever since. My only quibble with the US DVD, aside from fewer extra features, is the abandonment of the original eerie poster art with the hatted Chevalier and faithful companion Mani for dumbed down cover art (yes, there is shooting; yes, there is chop-socky) apparently made only for les Americains. And thanks, Tampa Tribune, for sending me the DVD as my contest prize!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with previous releases, Feb. 8 2003
This review is from: Complete Musketeers (DVD)
Arguably the best musketeers movies ever. Excellent transfers to DVD and NOT to be confused with the older Fox Lorber releases. Documentaries on the two DVD set include comments by cast members Michael York, Raquel Welch, Christopher Lee, Chuck Heston, and Frank Finlay. Wish the late Roy Kinnear, Oliver Reed, and Spike Milligan could have been here to contribute as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book + CD-ROM, Jan. 30 2003
...this collection of Mallory Pearce's excellent illustrations includes a CD-ROM with the book's graphics saved in BMP, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PICT, and TIFF formats. Have fun with the shore birds, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, Porifera, Coelenterata (I looked the last two up), and flora! Great to use on faxes, letters, and envelopes. This may turn out to be my favorite Dover clip art + CD-ROM collection since "Food and Drink Illustrations" ISBN: 0486999440.

Hadn't seen the film for some ten years before it arrived on DVD. A decade makes me even more appreciate Spader's work as Michael Boll. His character is a most convincing utter corporate dork who struggles to free himself of his devils then aftwards free himself of his 'savior.' Lowe too is great in his villain's role also though his character is perhaps overly cute/pretty at times - yet convincingly threatening when required. Good to see Christian Clemenson in *any* capacity. Oh, Lisa Zane: suits please note she needs more time before a camera! (Notice how the couples who stumble into the plot - the pier bar, the garage - are screaming about their relationships?) Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colonial war film, May 25 2002
A fine action film, also a short overview of the French post-war attempt to keep hold of Indo-China then Algeria. The movie fairly shows French injustices in Algeria leading to the later excesses by both the French and rebels. Note how, at that time, all their military equipment larger than personal arms was American in origin. Good cast, great scenery, was told by 'Nam vets that the battle sequences are very authentic looking. Also note this: how many other post-war French colonial paratroop war movies are there?

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not true Old West, May 12 2002
Very entertaining film of a most implausible gunfighters' contest. Highlights include director Raimi's over the top camera work as well as an outstanding back-up cast including Lance Hendrickson, Jonothan Gill, Pat Hingle, Tobin Bell, Roberts Blossom. No, Bruce Campbell is not visible even though he's listed in the credits. Authentic armaments: when was the last time you saw a "My Friend" knuckle-duster in a movie? Great score too! This was Woody Strode's last film.
