Oh, brother!, Nov 2 2002
These two films are geared to the gay market, with lingering shots on young studs; some other reviewers may deny this but they obviously didn't notice how the chief vampire eyed the young stud. (It's not that subtle!) I can say though that these two movies are well filmed The first movie is about a frat of vampires who want to initiate a young studly jock. These vampires are fangless though, using instead an amulet (similar in concept to 1983s "The Hunger"). I can't understand why, when two guys get into bed with a lady to feed from her they all remain in their underwear. She obviously gets a high from feeding them, but I can't see why... whether she's on drugs already, or not, because these vampires don't seem to be able to mesmerise their prey. The second film is about a young warlock who tries to initiate 3 studs into a covern. This is even less interesting than the first, but just as elegantly filmed.

Krull is Cool, Oct 20 2002
I remember seeing this at the movies when I was a teen, and have waited for its DVD apperence. This is a good film to get. It's a great blend of sci-fi/fantasy with a good old medieval style tale of adventure against "the beast". (trivia) This one features commentary from the director, plus the stars Ken Marshall, & Lysette Anthony. I must say Ken Marshall certainly changed over the years... for Star Trek fans, he was the re-occuring character "Eddington" on Deep Space 9 (though in this film he hasn't lost his hair).

Unromantic - but interesting, Aug 17 2002
A confrontational film - not just because of its more explicit sex scenes (but this is no porno). It is in fact so explicit that my country (Australia) banned it for a short time. A woman (Caroline Ducey) bares all in her search for love - but the love of her life doesn't notice her, even when she is being very intimate with him, so she finds sexual relief from Paolo, played by real-life continental porn-star Rocco Siffredi. Caroline Ducey goes through quite a lot for her role! I have to say it again; it is confrontational. In this respect it's similar to the Italian film Guardami, and another French film, Baise Moi (both of which I have also seen - the former is about a porn star who discovers she is terminally ill, the later is like an over sexed over violent version of Thelma & Louise, but is in fact a very poor film).

Baise tu!, Aug 17 2002
With the same level of explicit sex as Catherine Breillat's 1999 film "Romance", (which is far superior) "Baise Moi" makes up for lack of plot by adding in lots of pointless violence. The film quality is poor, it is highly grainy in texture. There is also a minimal of plot - basically a road movie a la "Thelma & Louise" only more suited to porn. Banned in my country due to the excess of violence, I was non-the-less able to view this by ordering in a DVD copy from overseas. I'm glad I didn't have to sit through this at the cinema! This film already has 'cult' status because it was obviously made to shock, rather than entertain, & in this at least, it succeeds. Baise moi? Baise tu!

Wrap your wings around this, Aug 16 2002
A very good story about Angels that are all around us - but we can't see them. Some of them wish to be human. One of them tries to be (Bruno Ganz). Filmed in Germany, much of it in b/w. A surprising small role is given to Peter Falk, and look out for the rock band - Nick Cave & the Badseeds an Australian band (not Austrian!). The only negative is it's a bit long winded. Unfortunately the numb-nuts in Hollywood tried to make a version of this & produced the syrupy "City of Angels"

Animatic, Aug 16 2002
A very interesting animated film. The Beatles didn't want to make another film so the compromise was this animation with actors doing a credible job voicing the Beatle characters. The Beatles saw this film & were so impressed that they wanted to be in it - so they appear right at the very end. Some of the songs in this aren't their very best... viz "Only a Northern Song", & "Alltogether Now" but you might discover that this film is an allegory of the Beatles themselves (& the 60s) - brining colour & music to the world - something we're still grateful for.

Worth the time, Aug 16 2002
Not the best film in the world but an interesting spin on the H G Wells "Time Machine" theme with the hero being none other than that author himself - played by Maclolm McDowell in one of the few roles he's ever played the good-guy. They've cast other Brit perenial bad guy David Warner as Jack the Ripper. It's worth a look at - & much better than the recent "Time Machine" with Guy Pearce.

Band on a Walk, Aug 16 2002
You'll not get Hi Hi Hi on this one! Paul McCartney is given a grilling by his daughter Mary. Well, no actually she doesn't ask him a single hard-hitting question at all, but still if you're a fan of the band Wings -the masters of silly love songs, then this has some great footage. Mary acts astounded upon hearing that John took Yoko into the Beatles recording sessions. I'm no single pigeon but I was astounded that she'd have us believe that she's only just heard this. Oh, well, live and let die! Paul McCartney tries to re-write history - especially about the break-up of this band - which was actually caused when his long-time stalwart Denny Laine gave up on the project when McCartney got arrested in Japan. There was McCartney shouting Let 'em in! Mary had a Little Lamb, & that's her dad. She treats him with kid-gloves in this rather then as the magneito & titanium man that we know him to be. I don't know what girl's school she went to but they didn't teach journalism there. Oh well, back to the egg!

A sleeper of a film, Aug 16 2002
This film is more brooding than bloodletting. A vampire with Angst decides to tell his woes to a beautiful Charile (are they real?) Spralding (she's just as beautiful in Meridian: Kiss of the Beast). He's about to bite her, then tells her of his woes. Then he's just about to bite her, & he decides he's a few more woes to tell about. This continues for the rest of the film till they finally 'do it' in a scene that I beleive is only PG-rated. It must be tough to be a vampire. It was tough watching this film.

Twist & Rut, Aug 16 2002
Less like the funny satire Rutles soundtrack and more like a Grammy nomination for best contemporary or laid back album; one of the tracks is "Eine Kleine Middle Klass Musik" which explains a lot in that this album is not as biting as the excellent soundtrack.
