More Proficient Motorcycling: Mastering the Ride
More Proficient Motorcycling: Mastering the Ride
by David L. Hough
Edition: Paperback
14 used & new from CDN$ 20.85

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Safe Motorcycling., Jun 25 2003
This is a must read for any motorcycle rider, novice or experienced. The layout of the book is good and information easy to find. There is some overlap between the first book and this one (delayed apexing for example), though both are invaluable guides.

The basic physics of bike handling are covered nicely and has a no BS approach.
The book gives very good insight into safe cycling and has some practical exercises to try out as well.

Problems: Topics like counter steering are split across multiple chapters. Though this is the only one I found, it would have been nice to have all in once nice block or chapter.

Conclusions: For the street rider, both books by DLH are a must read. These books changed the way I look at street riding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong foundation builder, Aug 31 2002
This book will give you very strong foundations in
the basics of computation in the bio world. Though
this book does not give details of the computation
methods, it does give a very clear picture of math-
ematics and the science involved.

This book has a good coverage of FASTA and
BLAST. (Though a little bit short)

The programming techniques coverd are bare. Though
concepts like searching sequences using dynamic p-
rogramming are covered, you are better off reading
something like Proteome Research by wilkins et al.

I am yet to find a good book that deals only with
the technical and programming aspects of bio informatics
if you do find some thing interesting lemme know.

On the whole this book helped me understand a lot
about sequencing, alignment and prediction. The illustrations
and pictures provided are good and the text to the point.

If you are reading this review pls understand that I am
primarily a programmer trying to get into the
bio informatics business. I do not have any schooling
or degree or even experience in the bio informatics world.

Hope this helps

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Guide, Aug 30 2002
This review is from: DNS and BIND (Paperback)
I bought this book to understand the basics
of DNS. Needless to say the book did its job
well. Explains the concepts, set up and
Administration very well.

From the programmers point of view
this book had very good examples.
The C examples were well documented and explained
the workings of a resolver pretty well.

Overall, I cannot think of a better reference/guide
book for DNS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool, Aug 5 2002
I dunno how many people like me tried to read this book.

* I am not very math oriented.
* I dont have a CS degree.
* I am generally a dumb dude.

I am reading this purely for fun. I had a lot of trouble just understand the concept of CFG's. Since the text was dense, I had to look up other resources (web) to clarify and understand whats described.

What I dicovered was that book contained the best and shortest description and explanation of the concepts. In other words highly optimized. Every day read a couple of pages and every day this book fills me with new ideas and joy!

Conclusion: The text is terse. For an average guy like me, it is a little hard on the poor brain. With a little effort, hard work and patience this is proably the best book for concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is *The Java Book*, Aug 5 2002
For some body who's programmed in java for some time,
this would be an eye opener.

I got an idea of things that I was doing incorrectly quite some time. Though I have not yet finished the book, Of what I have learned from the first couple of sections is invaluable.

Highly recomended for any body into Java programming.

The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage
The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage
by Cliff Stoll
Edition: Paperback
52 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Very Well written!, Aug 5 2002
This book is very well written. This cliff guy is very interesting himself. One of those looney, geek characters.

The story itself is well structured. I didnt lose interest at any point.

The book also has references to Robert Morris (both Jr and Sr) which i found quite interesting.

Unlike Shimomura's Takedown, the author comes across as a nice down to earth guy, downplaying his technical ability and is really funny at times (like trying to microwave his sneakers against his girlfriends advice!)

I have read this book three times and I never got bored at any time. This is the ultimate craker story (and true to boot).
I will go back to this book any day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Concept Building book., April 1 2002
I bought this book to understand the computer science side of molecular biology. This book gives good treatment of the basics though if you are a programmer and want to get involved straight away, this book will be of little help.

This book helped me understand some concepts, and pointed me to some of the tools and databases that are currently in use in the bioinformatics business.

TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols
TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols
by W. Richard Stevens
Edition: Hardcover
14 used & new from CDN$ 7.05

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb for Concepts, April 1 2002
Highlights:

*) Very clear and precise
*) source code in book very nicely explained.

Drawbacks:

*) Sometimes very heavy treatment (at least on my poor brain!)
*) Not a very portable reference (considering there are 2 more volumes). Is there a CD version ;-) ??

I initially bought this book to understand how the tcp/ip stack was implemented in linux.
Being a programmer mainly doing business related software, I initially found understanding this a little daunting to go through . After a little effort and looking at the source, i found this book enlightening!

I found it extremely useful comparing code and concepts in the book with the actual tcp/ip source (FreeBSD and Linux). I am still going through 3 volumes of the book.

A very good text book if you want to dig into the core of tcp/ip.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent coverage of the protocols., Dec 22 2001
I found vol 2 and 3 extremely helpful as a reference book, definitely recomended for learning the core of the tcp/ip system.

i started out trying to learn the basics of the ip stack,
insted this prompted me to buy vol 1 and 3 as well.
