5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD and Fantastic movie!!, Dec 10 2001
This review is from: Crawling Eye, the (DVD)
Image Entertainment have done a fantastic job on this classic, presented here in widescreen and in it's original european form with the title 'Trollenberg Terror'. There is a selection of stills plus the usual trailer. Well worth the money and this would make a brilliant Christmas present for any lover of 1950s Sci-Fi movies - Buy it you will love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fifties SCI-FI at its very best, April 24 2001
What a trully fantastic little movie this is, a real SPFX shocker in its day, and a great story with some fantastic character acting. TV in the UK used to show this a lot in the 1980's but it has been missing for a few years, and it is one of my faves, so now thanks to the team at Criterion I can own this peice of trully bizarre sci-fi cinema history. The extras are great and the commentary is very informative, also there is an essay a sort of potted history of UK sci-fi movies from this era. The transfer is crisp apart from a few scratches on the stock film used, particularly the old plane shots and the radar base, but this is mere trifle compared to the overall mastery involved in the plot and effects, which are for the time pretty incredible to say the least. If you want any more proof of sci-fi from the golden age being intelligent, thought provoking and damn right scary then go and buy this movie, and be very very impressed....

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best of the Quatermass stories!, Feb 27 2001
This review is from: Quatermass II (Full Screen) (DVD)
Having now bought both versions of this 50s classic of paranoia and sheer tension on DVD and VCR, I can tell tou that both versions were worth every penny spent, apart from the shoddy trailer on the VCR version. The atmosphere of suspence in this film is beyond belief, as aliens from an orbiting asteroid orbit the dark side of the earth, sending projectiles to the earth, which on contact with human life infect an individual, and possess thier minds, so that the aliens can manifest themselves in a replica of Professor Quatermass' Moon Project, which basically looks like an oil refinery with an addage of huge pressure domes, which harbour the alien organisms as they are collected by armed guards who protect the base. 'Quatermass 2' location actually was an oil refinery, SHELL to be precise at Coryton in Essex, sometimes refered to as SHELLHAVEN. The film does have it's share of shock moments such as the rebellious worker's bodies being pulped along the pipes from the domes, to stop oxygen from being pumped into it. Vincent Broadhead's death is quite horrible too, as he staggers from an alien food sphere covered in disgusting, black and corrosive food, which is what the plant is reportedly supposed to be producing. Anchor Bay produce a nice crisp and clear print of this film, also the feature has a trailer (US), and an episode of the series 'World of Hammer', a delight to own, and the ultimate in Quatermass stories (MY FAVE MOVIE) to be produced so far, let's hope it gets a remake in the future, because ever a stor deserved it, it's this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hammer at it's best!!!!!!!, Feb 27 2001
This review is from: Devil Rides Out (Widescreen) (DVD)
What an absolutely beautiful presentation this is, Anchor Bay have really pulled out all of the stops for this presentation, sheer quality. The guys and gals at the Bay must really work their socks off presenting these Hammer Classics and this is no exception, a crystal clear and almost pristine print. The master of Horror Mr, Christopher Lee gives us commentary, which is very informative. He talks about his role as de Richleau(?), and the production of what must surely rate as one of Hammers best. A trailer is included and an episode of 'The World of Hammer' series titled 'Hammer'. If you buy no other movies on DVD this year then please, please buy this one and enjoy the dark foreboding times of cinema before 'The Exorcist' became the parody of modern day stories of black magic and possession.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quatermass does battle with five million year old Martians, Feb 20 2001
This movie although not strictly my favourite of the Quatermasses, is still an excellent piece of Sci-Fi cinema, and it has an absolutely brilliant cast to back it up. Andrew Kier is excellent as our intrepid hero, and a million light years away from Donlevy's more abrupt version of Quatermass in the 2 previous films. Anchor Bay have excelled themselves with this quality presentation, there are trailers galore US & UK, which are quit similar, an episode of World of Hammer the Sci-Fi one! And streets ahead of this are the commentaries by writer Kneale and director Ward-Baker which are really informative. Although I prefer the BBC 3hr version, this is a piece of cinema gold and certainly worth repeated viewings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Professor Bernard Quatermass -RIP, Feb 20 2001
This review is from: Quatermass (VHS Tape)
Having been a longtime fan of the Quatermass stories, when I saw this, originally broadast back in 1979 I was dissapointed to say the least, I thought Kneale had taken leave of his senses. I have since had 20 odd years to think about this story, and 20 years where I have literally refused to watch it in any form, as either the full length version( which I Am reviewing now) or the shortened theatrical version, until now. I bought this 2 tape version through Amazon and decided to give it one last chance, and strangely enough I think it has aged quite well, considering the SPFX look a bit shaky, but it was mainly the cast I wasn't too keen on, Barbara Kellerman copletely over acts her part, but on the whole not bad. It's strange to watch it and look back and think my god that was 20 years ago I sat watching that. But enough of that it's a good little seriel, and it does have it's weak moments too. HBO the distributers of this beautifully packaged edition deserve full marks for presentation and quality, if only VCR's in the UK were designed so well. It's to be hoped that someone either Kneale or the BBC at some point release the Excellent Quatermass Memoirs on audio, for the rest of the world to appreciate, the five episodes of Memoirs fit neatly between Quatermass and the pit and the final story, and the late Andrew Kier( who plays Quatermass in Hammer's Q&TP) reprises his role for this fantastic little story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gentle Snowmen of the Himalayas, Feb 16 2001
This review is from: Abominable Snowman, the (DVD)
One of my all time favourite movies, ever. The performances of Cushing and Tucker are superb and very believable, and the subject offers Hammer at the time(1957) to approach this topic with a more gentler feel, than most of their subjects of the time I.E Frankenstein & Quatermass. On the whole this is a very thought provoking and beautiful film, which now thanks to Anchor Bay has an excellent crisp widescreen print. Nigel Kneale who does commentary on this edition as well as director Val Guest must be very pleased with the outcome of this edition, even if they can't agree to differ over the first 2 Quatermass stories, then at least they can agree over this amazing collaberation being one of their finest. Also a re-make of a long lost TV show (The Creature 1956),and a BBC production this is definately one to own,so do yourself a favour buy it, then sit back with the lights out and enjoy the truelly haunting story of 'The Abominable Snowman'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first Quatermass Shocker !!!, Feb 13 2001
The ultimate in man into space-man returns-man mutates into alien movie, and although not as good as the second and third Quatermass stories,it still holds the attention some 46yrs later, and being also considering that Hollywood seem over-run with re-makes I believe this would make a good one for a change. Although Donlevy's performance is a little stiff,Margia Deans is dire, and her voice on this edition has been dubbed, probably to make her seem less automaton like, but I believe it is Richard Wordsworth's performance that truelly delivers the goods, truelly a classic of it's day, shame a DVD hasn't been announced of the movie, come along MGM how about it?

Truelly a great and entertaining piece of 50s Hammer Sci-Fi,and what a treat to own on DVD. Dean Jagger is excellent in his (Quatermass like) role as Dr Adam Royston and Leo Mckern is great as the scientists back-up man,a truelly tense little shocker, and what must contain one of the earliest melting-man scenes in a movie,if not the first. A CLASSIC go and BUY IT!!!!!
