2.0 out of 5 stars E book too expensive, April 12 2014
Ce commentaire est de: The Outcast Dead (Hardcover)
Thee book version of this won't be out for a year and then it's going to cost over $15.00. That's simply too high. As much as I enjoy this series I will not pay that price. Publishers, WAKE UP and realize that you are alienating many readers.

Smart characters in tough situations, lovely writing, great story. Elly Griffiths is superb. Her books are set in a part of England that isn't covered a lot in other detective stories. Her main character is now grappling with motherhood and the treatment is great - it's not all rainbows and delight, but the fierce love and protectiveness surprise our otherwise rational/intellectual heroine. There's a good balance between the characters' personal lives as they develop over the course of the books (try to read them in order), and the specific mystery story at the heart of each book.

However, do plan on finding a lot of blankets to lay onto tables and chairs - it's recommended as a padded base for doing many of the exercises.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good winter selection, July 17 2013
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
Ordered this just as a heat wave hit, so while the recipes sound delicious and the narrative is witty and fun, I'm going to wait to try some of them until it's cooler. Most of the foods are rich heavy and great for a cold wintery night.

5.0 out of 5 stars just what I wanted, July 17 2013
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
Easy to put on, does not interfere with the touch screen, does cut some glare (but still not able to read easily in bright sunshine.) Can't have everything. I also notice that fingerprints don't show up as badly now that I'm using the screen. I got it in white - which was hard to find on the Amazon site - but being persistent I found it to go over my white ipad mini and it's almost invisible once on.

The cover does put the iPad to sleep as described. It's lightweight, works OK as a stand (could be a bit more flexible), and it fits well. For the price, it's a good deal.

Pirate King: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes
Pirate King: A novel of suspense featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes
by Laurie R. King
Edition: Hardcover
48 used & new from CDN$ 0.13

4.0 out of 5 stars Mary, Morocco, and 12 Blonds, Oct. 12 2011
Mary Russell goes off at Sherlock's encouragement to help figure out what's going on with a small English filmmaker who seems to be mixed up in drug- and gun-running. The film troupe is led by an English aristocratic idiot who simply must film on a real pirate ship with pirates, in Morocco. Lisbon becomes their first port-of-call, and in addition to meeting several intriguing characters we get a tour of an ancient city and the countryside. Then it's off to Morocco in a leaky boat, with a crew of real pirates and silly actresses, followed by imprisonment in a harem. Holmes has by now entered the act, and we get a few really good scenes with the unlikely husband & wife of Sherlock and Mary. And of course there is derring-do with knives and furniture good enough for an old Errol Flynn movie. Several old movies are brought into the storyline, and references to "The Sheik" abound. We've forgotten how much of an impact that film made on people. And in light of current attitudes towards Arabs, the book makes you think a bit about how our attitudes and beliefs are shaped by our media. Some reviews aren't so positive but I enjoyed this story. Mary is observant and a bit cynical, Holmes is canny and brave (and in love, how nice. And the various new characters introduced may make future entries in this series very interesting. The storyline that is set up to start all of the action isn't particularly exciting or important, but the mystery (what there is of it) is solved and all is well by the end of the last chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paris, Lovers & Revolutionaries - Superb, Feb. 21 2011
Ce commentaire est de: The Orchid Affair (Hardcover)
After the disappointing "Bloodlily" entry in this series, I was wondering if Willig had lost her enthusiasm for her Pink Carnation books. But Orchid Affair is, I think, the best yet in the set. A very interesting heroine with complex emotions, a plot of spies and counterspies, and a strong historic grounding all combine to make this an excellent escapist adventure read. The overall feeling is close to Georgette Heyer's best works, with well-rounded characters and believable motivations, including the children and minor players in the storyline.

The Attenbury Emeralds
The Attenbury Emeralds

5.0 out of 5 stars It does read like Sayers, Feb. 18 2011
Ce commentaire est de: The Attenbury Emeralds (Paperback)
I had read Paton Walsh's "Thrones, Dominions" when it was published some years ago, and wasn't impressed. But Paton Walsh seems to have worked hard to copy Sayers' style, and this book, composed of several related stories about the Attenbury family jeriwels, is a very very good imitation of the real thing. Once in a great while Bunter says something a tiny bit off-key, but it's easy to overlook. The author creatively links the stories over time, beginning with Lord Peter recounting his earliest detecting adventures to his wife, Harriet, and then bringing the story into the present (early 1950s England) and involving Harriet in some of the investigations. As a long-time Lord Peter fan I enjoyed glimpses of his and Harriet's domestic life with sons, butler and even the Dowager Duchess (aging gracefully.) Definitely enjoyable.
