Lights, Camera, Sex!
Lights, Camera, Sex!
by Christy Canyon
Edition: Paperback
13 used & new from CDN$ 29.45

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart, Humor, and a Hysterical Hillbilly, April 20 2004
This review is from: Lights, Camera, Sex! (Paperback)
Christy's candid (and often painful) recollections lend heart to this book, something not found in recent adult star memoirs.
Sure, there are juicy tidbits from behind the scenes and anecdotes suggesting that the freaks aren't necessarily the ones in the show (refer to Max Baer and the "silver bullet," respectively), but there's no hint of Raw Talent's arrogance or Underneath It All's sugar coating.
Equal parts cautionary tale (particularly for parents and those contemplating adult entertainment careers) and personal triumph, Canyon proves herself a self-respecting, resilient survivor. She (refreshingly) refuses to shy away from or downplay her past and self-assuredly forges into the future.
Not a bad read from a first time author, there's an ease to Christy's story telling that will only grow with future works.

This review is from: Massive Luxury Overdose (Audio CD)
Ha, and to think, the first time I heard Army of Lovers was on Beavis and Butthead as they reviewed the "Crucified" video...what can say, it's deliciously great fun, listen to the cd on a Tuesday night and dance around your living room like it's the weekend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Much and Not Enough, Aug. 24 2002
This isn't the story of Gia's life whereas she never had much of a life...she was used as a doll to vicariously live through by her mother, she used others to fulfill the love she so desperately craved-and couldn't give herself-and was used by an industry that cared less if it's workers lived/died/whatever, as evidenced by the (non)reactions to her death.
Gia deserved better than this, we all do, it's a pity that people (mentioned in the book, not the readers) are more interested in knowing the real person posthumously than they were when she was alive, breathing, and searching for love, a place to belong, and a way to achieve inner beauty.
If anything, this is more a cautionary tale about dysfunctional family life and it's effect on young, growing children rather than a warning about the fashion industry, more of us probably fall into the former category rather than under the label "supermodel."

Thirteen Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey

5.0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kathryn Tucker Wyndham, July 4 2002
These books were a delightful part of my childhood, I grew up in southeast Alabama and visited many of the haunted sights (the hole that wouldn't stay filled, the grave of the dancing ghost, Huntington College, et al). I recall attending a "storytelling" by Mrs. Wyndham in the 1970's, never was it more fun to be so scared!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Well..., June 23 2002
While the author does maintain a good website relative to the DeFeo case, this book is a huge disappointment. I absorbed more misspellings, grammatical errors, and non sequiturs than I did "new, revealing information."
The book is poorly written and that, sadly, removes any flow or continuity which would otherwise comprise "a good read." The feel is more he said/she said/we said than factual,non-fiction information.
I hate to slag but it is what it is, and that, my friends, is a disappointment. However, upon seeing Mr. Osuna on A&E's "City Confidential," I understand the basis of the inarticulate written word.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Fun!, March 9 2002
This review is from: Love & a .45 (VHS Tape)
Okay, first off, you cannot go wrong with a movie that has the Butthole Surfers and the Jesus and Mary Chain on the soundtrack.
Now, this was another of those movies I rented because I got to Blockbuster late and all the "good stuff" was gone...this movie is so cheesy, it's hysterical! It's one of those cool "laugh out loud" and "don't have to think while watching it" movies.
Key scenes to look for: Billy Mac robbing the store, Billy Mac and the fork, Billy Mac and the tattoo, and Peter Fonda's cameo (or whatever his role is) in the movie.
I heard it was something of a rip-off of Natural Born Killers but since I never saw that, I don't know, but seeing as how Love and a .45 was made first...chicken or the egg, huh?

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for 7 Year Olds, March 9 2002
This review is from: Soylent Green (VHS Tape)
I saw this film when I was seven years old and it scared ... me because I thought it was real!!! Fortuantely, Deathrace 2000 came along shortly thereafter to assauge my fright...I still don't know why my mother answered every question with, "don't do it, you'll burn in Hell..." yet let me watch this stuff at a young age. OH WELL.

And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mother's Story of Her Daughter's Murder
And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mother's Story of Her Daughter's Murder
by Deborah Spungen
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 18.95
29 used & new from CDN$ 11.81

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and Forthright, Feb. 28 2002
Admitting to one's own faults and exposing family problems is not an easy thing to do yet Mrs. Spungen does so in a frank and forthright manner, she doesn't gloss over her family's life with-and without-Nancy. Nancy may have been mentally ill and a difficult child to raise, but it does show that her parents always loved her unconditionally and did try to understand her (even though that was not always possible).
It's sad that she has become a pop icon of sorts, best known for having been stabbed to death in the Chelsea Hotel, and not known for the insight and ideals that were uniquely Nancy's, but Mrs. Spungen does bring many of those qualities to light to show that yep, Nancy was a real person with a real life and real problems and occasional triumphs.

Invisible Darkness: The Strange Case Of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka
Invisible Darkness: The Strange Case Of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka
34 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars Sick, Feb. 28 2002
Sick. Karla and Paul are, without as doubt, two of the most vile, malligned creatures on this planet. As if it isn't bad, sick and twisted enough to accost, assault, and kill a perfectly innocent stranger snatched off the street...these two wind up acting out their perversions on a young family member as well!!!
Once the case burst open and both were arrested, Karla was more concerned about safely getting her possessions out of the house than helping the police find out the truth behind the gruesome torture, rape, murder of three young women! She had the audacity to wear the Mickey Mouse watch-that had belonged to one of the victims-during a police interview/interrogation!!!
And to add further insult to injury, Karla has been offered an early out from prison! Nervermind the eternal prison the families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffee (sic) live and suffer in...just make an accomplice to the rapes and murders of their daughters happy, huh?
I cannot imagine what Karla's family is thinking-she is on videotape as an active participant in the drugging, raping, and subsequent death of her teenage sister-and yet they still support her and plan to welcome her back into their home once released from prison!!!
Man oh, man, you talk about Dysfunction fest...
