5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Dec 18 2009
This review is from: The Golden Mean (Hardcover)
I read the book almost in one day, starting it at night, reading through the following day, and then finishing it the morning after that. The book is filled with fascinating characters with complicated names (thank god for the character index in the front) and even more complicated issues and problems. Aristotle is written with such grace and beauty and hilarity, the same way she handles all her other characters in this book. There are no simple problems here, which is fitting for a novel about one of the greatest thinkers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Dec 18 2009
This new book is full of new adventures and into how people think, how creativity and new ideas were developed.

Overall, the book had less impact than some of his previous work (e.g., Tipping Point) where he took one idea and really developed it. Still, as light reading, this book is a good buy. The essays are self-contained, so it's pretty easy to pick it up, read for a while, then put it down again without worried about losing track of an argument or line of thought. The wide range of topics make it likely that most readers will enjoy at least some, but probably not all, of the essays. So if you like Gladwell's other books, and are looking for something similarly amusing, but a little lighter, than this is probably going to be a good (if not great) book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice & Enjoyable, Nov. 20 2009
This review is from: The Bishop's Man (Hardcover)
From an award-winning writer and one of Canada's foremost broadcast journalists, comes a deeply wise and moving novel that explores the guilty minds and spiritual evasions of Catholic priests.

Father Duncan MacAskill has spent most of his priesthood as the "Exorcist" -- an enforcer employed by his bishop to discipline wayward priests and suppress potential scandal. He knows all the devious ways that lonely priests persuade themselves that their needs trump their vows, but he's about to be sorely tested himself. While sequestered by his bishop in a small rural parish to avoid an impending public controversy, Duncan must confront the consequences of past cover-ups and the suppression of his own human needs. Pushed to the breaking point by loneliness, tragedy and sudden self-knowledge, Duncan discovers how hidden obsessions and guilty secrets either find their way to the light of understanding, or poison any chance we have for love and spiritual peace.

Another sure winner & true story:

3.0 out of 5 stars What about the God factor?, Sept. 29 2009
"Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell focuses in on why people are successful and why people are not successful. According to Malcolm being successful depends on many factors including your birth date, your family, and your place of birth and of course your luck.

Can't stop recommended this book to Canada: YOU WILL LOVE IT; TERRY FOX WOULD BE PEOUD!

This review is from: The Book Of Negroes (Paperback)
Based on everything I'd heard, I had high expectations for this one. The story itself is a great one but the writing has left me a underwhelmed. The language seems geared toward a young or inexperienced reader, and doesn't have the depth to fully transport me.

Still, it's worth reading for the historical perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to catorize..., Sept. 29 2009
As a fan of science fiction, I was drawn to this book by it's title (and a recommendation I read online). I found the first quarter of the book intriguing because it read like a how-to guide for time travelling. It's not your usual love story because there are parts of the story that are unsettling, especially the violence involved in Henry's attempts to survive being thrust in hostile environments and situations. In the end, you'll find that it's his humanity, his struggle to have a fulfilling relationship and ultimately make sense of his place in the world that grips you.

This novel is not for those looking for a sappy love story, nor is it for the hardcore sci-fi fan. It's simply a good story with a fantastic (out of this world, unique) premise. It is a strange and wonderful look into the turmoil of a man unable to control his own destiny, but able to live a fulfilling life (and experience a profound love) despite his incredible handicap.
