2.0 out of 5 stars Could be subtitled "Why Gene Simmons Is So Great", Sept. 4 2013
This review is from: Kiss and Make-Up (Paperback)
This is not a book that tells anything resembling a detailed story of KISS. This is a total puff piece. It's all about Gene, how smart he is, how hard he worked, how successful he's been at everything he's ever tried, and how many women he's slept with. He doesn't shed much light on KISS' 1970's glory days, although I'm sure there must have been some great stories from that era that remain untold. He only goes into detail when he wants to make other people look bad.

Simmons wastes a lot of effort in deriding and insulting former KISS members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, going out of his way to paint them as lazy, volatile, alcoholics and drug addicts. To KISS fans, Frehley and Criss were integral parts of the classic lineup, and it's painful to see Simmons throw them under the bus like he does in these pages. He paints them as incompetent musicians who contributed very little to KISS' success. Gene keeps himself directly in the spotlight at all times, and shows virtually no humility. He spends more time discussing his relationships with Cher and Shannon Tweed than he does discussing the thing that made him famous in the first place, his music.

The only thing this book did for me was destroy much of the KISS mystique, which is a shame because I was a big fan.

Watch You Bleed: The Saga of Guns N' Roses
Watch You Bleed: The Saga of Guns N' Roses
by Stephen Davis
Edition: Paperback
5 used & new from CDN$ 13.49

5.0 out of 5 stars A great history of the band, Sept. 4 2013
I know this book has been criticized by some readers for minor mistakes, but these aren't the types of mistakes that make a book unreliable. For example, the author refers to Jimi Hendrix famously burning his Les Paul at Monterey (in reality, Hendrix burned his Stratocaster) and refers to Paul Stanley as the bassist in KISS (Gene Simmons was/is the band's bassist) but these errors are quite minor and irrelevant to the story.

Another complaint I've heard is that Davis isn't offering anything new to the GNR story, and that everything found here can be found from other sources. SO WHAT? This book is a great telling of a very interesting story. Very detailed and not much is held back. The author does a terrific job of describing the 1980's glam metal scene in general for context. If you have any interest at all in Guns N' Roses, you'll find this book very difficult to put down, as you follow them from pre-stardom to the streets of Hollywood, to their eventual implosion. For those of us who don't already know everything there is to know about Guns N' Roses, this is a fantastic book.

4.0 out of 5 stars There is something to this, March 14 2013
One thing "Zefenchy" conveniently neglected to point out in his review, a rather important point, is that the authors of this book successfully predicted back in early 2012 that Benedict XVI would soon abdicate for health reasons, paving the way for the final Pope. After successfully predicting something that most believed would never happen, how can any reviewer say that "these authors got it wrong all along"?

When this reviewer states "the 266th pope is not Peter the Roman but Francis the 1st from Argentina", he clearly shows a lack of understanding of the St. Malachy prophecies. Malachy used a short phrase in Latin to describe each Pope, beginning with Celestine II and “From a castle on the Tiber.” That Pope’s birth name was Guido di Castello. More recently, he described Pope John Paul I with the phrase: “From the midst of the moon.” His reign, which began in 1978, began with the moon half full and lasted only one month — or one moon. He was followed by Pope John Paul II by the Latin expression “Laboris Solis” — or translated “From the labor of the sun” — an expression meaning a solar eclipse. As it turned out, John Paul II was the only known pope to be born on the day of a solar eclipse — and he was buried on the day of a solar eclipse. For the next Pope, Benedict XVI, St. Malachy wrote: “Glory of the olive.” Before the Pope was selected, some suggested a Benedictine would be elected because the order is sometimes referred to as the Olivetans, whose name ultimately derives from the Mount of Olives in the New Testament. A Benedictine was not selected. However, upon his election as pontiff, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger chose the name Benedict after St. Benedict of Nursia, founder of the Benedictine Order.

So the fact that the new Pope is named Francis the 1st from Argentina means nothing.

Read the book and decide for yourself.

This is your standard mid-90s co-ed alternative rock. The songs are pretty good and Liane de Lotbinière's vocals are strong. The production is a bit weak.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, June 29 2010

As a longtime sports fan who had slowly been beginning to suspect that something fishy is going on, I was very eager to read this book when I heard about it. It does not disappoint. It' A terrific book loaded with evidence that is difficult to deny. You'll NEVER look at pro sports the same way again after reading this. This book not only provides compelling evidence which proves that game-fixing happens, but how bloody EASY it is to do it! Once you see how it happens you'll wonder why you hadn't figured it out before. I am now convinced... basketball, baseball, etc. are absolutely as fake as wrestling. At least wrestling has the guts to be honest with you that it's all predetermined.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, Feb. 26 2009

This is a fascinating book. Be warned though, the stories contained in this book may shatter your uninformed "weltanschauung". It's kind of sad really, to discover that the events that the media portray as naturally occurring are in reality fomented and manufactured by the intelligence community. This book is convincing. You'll never look at the music industry the same again.
