Better Than Expected, Feb 27 2004
I only rented this because my favorite band, the Chileans LUCYBELL did a song for the movie. I was expecting a typical dumb vampire flick with terrible acting, etc. Let me say, this was better than most of the hollywood glossy garbage that has been coming out as of late. Kudos to the director for making the most out of a small budget. The plot is interesting, as are the loner, goth teenage characters. While the acting and script (Chilean slang) left a bit to be desired, I was still mildly surprised, and was glad to see that there was actually some thought put into this project. I will be keeping my eye on this director.

Stuck In My Mind, Feb 20 2004
The fact that the snuff film industry actually exists is scary enough. This film is a chilling look at peoples obsession with money and violence. I won't go into the plot, but I will say that all fans of psycological thrillers, mysteries and horror should check this one out. The acting was appropriate, and it was very well directed by Amenebar (who went on to direct the US hit "The Others"). This one will stick with you long after the credits have passed.

Classic Almodovar, Feb 20 2004
This Almodovar classic from the early 80's is an excellent dark comedy. Great characters such as the next door prostitute, the little redhead girl with telekinetic powers, the cheap grandma, the impotent policeman, the gay dentist, the two writers, and so on make for an interesting watch. Many classic lines are found in this one, like the newlywed who gets her face burnt from her husband spilling coffee on her "I'll never forget that cup of coffee" and "I'm diabetic? oh, I always forget at dinner time?" This film is not really driven by plot, but rather by the characters' lives. Like all Almodovar movies, it is a piece of art, a meditation and a comical look at life, sexual orientation, coincidence, destiny and love.

Among Almodovar's Very Best!, Feb 17 2004
This was the first Almodovar movie in which he used a higher picture quality, giving it a more hollywood look, ON THE SURFACE, but this is not hollywood-esque by any means other than that. The charcters are very Almodovar, in that most of them have serious issues. The Almodovar humor, like the grandma cutting the umbilical cord with her teeth, is there as well. The story has to do with Victor, a young, naive pizza delivery boy who has a quick fling with a drugged out daughter of an Italian diplomat. He eventually finds her, and gets involved in a scuffle with her in her apartment, causing some neighbors to call over the police. The police confront the couple, a shot ends up being fired, and so commences our bizarre, black comedy, tragic love story. The acting is great, great script, beautifully shot, it really is an excellent film. It is great to see legends like Pedro Almodovar continuing to get better and better. His last three have just been phenomanal, "All about my mother", "Live Flesh" and "Talk to her", can'd wait for his next release, "Bad Education" featuring Gael Garcia Bernal.

Deliciously Entertaining, Feb 12 2004
The characters are what drive this movie and make it fun to watch. Though I realize that last lobster dish he created for the stuck-up food critic was meant to be ridiculous, I still found myself drooling all over the couch. Danny Aiello is perfect as the low-key restauraunt owner who is not impressed with his star chef son's cuisine. The events are realistic, and I loved the pretentious, condesending "Fitzgerald" jerk who just rips his waitress to shreds with his lowbrow, rude remarks. The gay maitere D was hilarious as was the ... bartender who challenges his customers to trivia and rakes in the dough. My only semi-complaint was the ending which I found to be rather predictable and unbelievable, saw it coming a mile away. Still, this is a great indy film, and a must-see for anyone who works or has worked in a trendy restaurant.

More Than Just a "Food Movie", Feb 12 2004
I'm a sucker for food films like "eat, drink, man, woman" and "Like Water for Chocalate", etc. There is something so inwardley satisfying about seeing a grand feast on the screen, and seeing the reactions. But this one touched me like no other. It is brilliantly simple on the surface, though most of the movie is symbolic and drives home a powerful lesson concerning gratefulness, loyalty and community among other things (thanks to the reviewers who pointed out that the feast represents the Lord's supper, though I'm not "Christian" I still appreciated the parallels.) Read about the plot from other reviews, I just felt that I needed to throw in my 2 cents.

Not Only For Students, Feb 7 2004
I am using this textbook in several of my classes, and let me just say- it has everything I could have hoped for. The chapters are laid out well, many cases are cited, and the student is given actual cases to figure out, with the citations given at the end so he can find the actual outcome. I've found this to be among the best textbooks. It is so good, in fact that I've reccomended it to several of my friends who are going into business for themselves. This covers nearly everything they'll need to know regarding contracts, secured transactions, warranties, etc. Love the law!

Fun Ditty, Feb 4 2004
First off, I'd like to comment on the fact that this flick has a "theater" feel to it. It feels as though the audience is interacting with the cast. This musical whodunit mystery/black comedy is quite entertaining (and very French). Ozone uses bright colors and outlandish wardrobe as usual on this canvas. The musical score was fresh and although it wasn't necessary to further the plot, it added yet another dimension of artistry to the film. The actresses in this were clearly having a good time, and won me over right from the get-go. The plot is a typical "clue-style" story where 8 women are all suspects in a murder and they are trapped in a house with each other. A must see for all "artsy" film lovers!

Nude Matadores and Lottsa Ham, Feb 1 2004
This is a fun film! A black "who's sleeping with who?" comedy that draws its viewers into this bizarre, crazed love triangle. Anyone who is a fan of early Almodovar will get something out of this. The acting is great, especially by Bardem. The script has alot of subtle one-liners, and the sex and nudity is explicit and contributes to the anything goes atmosphere. So if you're looking for a fun dark/tragic comedy with lottsa sex, pick this one up.
