5.0 out of 5 stars Not a great book, but a very entertaining one!, Feb 5 2004
This review is from: Door of Death #15 (Paperback)
Okay, first off, this is not written by RL Stine. That has already been stated. It was written by Eric Weiner (Deadly Detention), and I knew what to expect knowing this. This book is very fast paced, and gory. OH SO GORY! People are stabbed, burned, chopped up, eyes are popped out, hearts are ripped out, and heads a squished. This book is GORY! And I loved it. It felt a lot like one of the older Fear Street books when they still took some risks. Even then, it is a tad more then that. Now, is this book good for 11 to 12 year olds? No, but I would expect them to still be reading Goosebumps. This is more like a 15 to 18 age range book. I mean, other than the violence there is nothing. No swearing, no sex, no nothing. Plus, although the book is gory, it isn't perverse, and really, other than maybe one or two lines a death, doesn't get all that bad. Over all, a fun book, not an amazing read, but a fun one. I would expect nothing less from a Fear Street book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Movie, Very Good Musical, Jan 31 2004
This review is from: Camp (DVD)
This movie suprised me a bit. Not with it's story, or acting, or script, but with it's music. The movie has some of the best musical moments. There was not one moment where I wanted to fast forward through a song, and I have to say, all the singing was top notch. As a musical, this works in spades. As a movie... not so much. If it wasn't for the language, and the fact that Vlad seems to sleep with just about everyone, I almost felt like I was watching one of those teen soaps they have on Noogin. This isn't a bad thing, but it really never went as far as it could. But even with that, I still had fun watching it, and got a kick out of some of the characters. Also, the leads, Vlad included, are all very talented, and fun to watch. I would say that this is perfect for the teen set, and it is, but because of the music, I have to say that any fan of musicals, especially modern ones like Hairspray, should check this out. The sex stuff (which is ALL implied and off camera) and some language (some swearing, not much) keep this from being a good movie for little kids, but 12 and 13 year olds should gobble it up. Recomended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent... kind of, Jan 25 2004
This review is from: Majorettes, the [Import] (DVD)
Well, I came in watching this movie with very low expectations, and I got, for the most part, what I expected. There are some nice moments, like the first kill in the convertible, and the dialogue between the two kids before that, but mainly, the movie was a by the book slasher, and then the end was a by the book revenge flick. The only thing that wasn't by the book in this movie was a few nice twists towards the end, even though they weren't big enough to save the movie from being rather bland. The acting for the most part was bottom of the barrel, with the exception of a few people. And the movie just seemed like it wanted to be to main stream for its own good. Some parts just cried out for a Troma style over the top feel, but instead they were stuck in total seriousness. That killed the mood, considering that this is a movie about a man killing majorettes. Oh, and don't expect gore. There is blood, but that's it.
One thing that really bugged me was the disk it self. The sound is pretty crappy, but I'm guessing that's just from the print that Shriek Show was given, but the thing that bugged me was that at one point the movie actually skips a chapter on its own. I think it was around chapter 12. The disk just went right to chapter 14, skipping a scene that actually had some important details, and going on to one that was just pure fluff and filler. So that was a problem. Otherwise the disk is fine. I would have to say **1/2 out of *****

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok little horror movie, Jan 5 2004
This review is from: Tomie - New (DVD)
I saw this movie a few months ago on an import dvd. I do have to say, the movie was VERY VERY slow. It had some creepy moments, and some good acting, but in the end, it was just to slow. Also, there is some very out of place nudity, and some sequences (like the flash back of the death of a particular student) that just fall flat due to weak direction. Maybe Replay will be better. I shall see.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Pulse is Still There, Jan 5 2004
This review is from: Battle Royale Vol. 4 (Paperback)
After volume 3, which was still a good read, and yet, far from as good as the rest of the series, Ihave to say, volume 4 really brought the life back. First off, the extreme sex of the Fallen Angel chapter in book 3 is gone, replaced by what makes the series work, pulse pounding excitment, and amazing characters. Also, I have to say, the art and style are amazing, detailed, and beautiful and gruesome at the same time. It's still at four stars, mainly because of my attitude towards the main character, Shuya (I think thats his name). He still feels to much like a bleeding Romeo hero, although he does get better in this volume, by realizing his flaws. And his "heroic" (stupid) actions are not treated as something great. But still, he bugs me, so that brings my rating down one star... more like half a star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Dec 15 2003
I was suprised. I started this movie, and very quickly I felt like I was in for a night of boredom. And that held for about 15 minutes or so in to the movie. Then the characters started to grow on me a bit, even the white ebonics guy. And then things started to get really freaky! The cast works very well once they get a hold on their characters, and everyone gives their all. Yes, there are annoying elements, like the white ebonics guy, but even he starts to grow during the movie, and towards the end I wanted him to live, just like the rest of the group. The soundtrack works very well, and has a little bit of techno, a little bit of rock, and a little bit of actually scoring that sounds amazing. There are also some very well shot scenes, and the movie looks very professional. While not the best movie ever, and far from original (it's like Wrong Turn meets The Hills Have Eyes meets Scream meets a zombie movie), it is still one of the better straight to video outings that has been released recently. And to top it all off, it has a great sense of humor at times, making some of the slower scenes, and scenes of character building enjoyable. So I give it four stars. The only thing holding it back from five is the first 15 minutes or so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good So Far, Dec 5 2003
Well, I've read a good deal of the stories in this book, and I have to say, over all they are decent. Not as good as Fatal Attractions (book XI), but still decent. The best story so far was deffinatly "Route 666" and coming in second is "One More Notch." The worst so far are "The Heroine" and "Death Fetish."
I recomend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not as good as 1 and 2, Nov 24 2003
This review is from: Battle Royale Vol. 3 (Paperback)
This is a decent volume in the series, but it gets bogged down at times by the ungodly amounts of sex, and a lot of overly dramatic dialogue. The dialogue I expected. The sex... not so much. And when I say sex,I mean graphic sex, and when I say graphic, I mean pornographic. Yes, you see everything. And, while normally I would look the other way, this time I was rather mad. Why? Well, for one, the sex was totally pointless (at least for the last section of the story) and at times wholey disgusting (there was, shockingly enough, a urine fetish scene). And for number two, most, if not all, characters involved in those scenes are 15 or younger. Now, they do not appear to be 15. They appear quiet the opposite. They all seem like adults, with very adult features, such as one girls GIGANTIC breasts. And while the first two books only hinted at some adult content, this book shoves it in your face, pees on you, and then leaves you covered in who knows what. And yet, the plot is still good. A bunch of a new characters are brought in to the story, and things do move along. But the sex holds this back from being a five star book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Nov 1 2003
This review is from: Angel (Paperback)
This may not be the most appealing manga visually, but when it comes to its story, it hits a home run. I picked up Angel on a whim (didn't really like Between the Sheets) and was glad I did. This is one of the better comics out there right now. The stories are uplifting, and yet, far from sappy. Honestly, they felt real, even though they deal with supernatural elements. Nothing felt forced, and nothing felt like a trick to make us care. And the story about the young girl and her mother nearly had me in tears (and anyone who has seen a guy cry would say that its an amazing feet). A deffinate pick. The only reason I gave it four stars was because of the art. While not bad, it is rather odd, and sometimes hard to deal with. It also can distract from the over all feel. Luckily the story makes up for that.
