5.0 out of 5 stars First rate suspense thriller, April 10 2000
This review is from: Coma [Import] (VHS Tape)
When a close friend dies unexpectedly after routine surgery, suspicious doctor Genevieve Bujold digs into the depths of a shocking medical conspiracy. Brutally tense, exciting film, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. It poses some touchy philosophical questions as well. Also starring Michael Douglas and Richard Widmark, who both perform well in critical roles. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clint's best western, April 10 2000
This review is from: High Plains Drifter (VHS Tape)
If you could take only one Clint Eastwood western with you to a desert island, I would recommend this one. It is a stark, moody, violent and compelling morality tale with outstanding production, fine direction, and uniformly excellent performances from a skilled cast. Clint adroitly melded techniques learned from Sergio Leone with his own unique vision to craft a true classic. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars By his own admission, Arnold's worst film, April 10 2000
This review is from: Red Sonja (VHS Tape)
In fairness, it is only Schwarzenegger's presence which lifts this movie out of the 1-star category. There are some fairly good fight scenes, a few nifty sets, and some nice location filming. Other than that, however, it is a waste of time. There are numerous technical errors and other indications of slipshod production values. Nielsen's acting, if you are so generous as to call it that, is embarassingly bad. Sandahl Bergman, normally pretty competent, overcooks it completely as the evil queen. If you like this type of heroine, it would be preferable to spend your time watching Xena, which though far from high art, is much better than "Red Sonja."

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably Seagal's Best, March 21 2000
This review is from: Under Siege (VHS Tape)
Navy Seal Seagal battles terrorists led by rogue agent Tommy Lee Jones, who have hijacked the battleship USS Missouri and its nuclear missles. Action-packed thriller which pulls no punches. When you see the look in Seagal's eyes upon finding his Captain's body, you know the creeps are dead meat. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another of Stewart's fine 1950's Westerns, March 21 2000
This review is from: Bend of the River (VHS Tape)
Man with a past James Stewart leads a settlers' supply train on a trail of danger and greed. Excellent western with plenty of action, beautiful location filming and a good cast. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind Western, March 15 2000
This review is from: One Eyed Jacks (VHS Tape)
Brooding outlaw Marlon Brando seeks to even the score with the former partner who double-crossed him (Karl Malden). Though a little disjointed at times, this film is otherwise so well crafted and performed that one easily can forgive any minor shortcomings. The supporting actors are uniformly excellent, the tension well-sustained, the setting beautiful, and of course, nobody else can be Brando. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind war movie, March 15 2000
This review is from: Young Lions, the (VHS Tape)
Despite a few flaws, this is nontheless a fine and unique film, with a skilled cast, good production values, and a compelling, though episodic story. There are many outstanding and often disturbing scenes which linger in the mind long after viewing. I have seen it many times, and have always found it to be a thoroughly engrossing piece of work. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Western, March 15 2000
This review is from: Tin Star, the (VHS Tape)
Ex-sheriff turned bounty hunter Henry Fonda teaches the lawman trade to rookie peace officer Anthony Perkins in an excellent, intelligent western. High marks go to both cast and direction. Fonda plays to perfection one of his trademark type of roles, the weary, reluctant hero. A fine film by any measure. Highly recommended.

I have little to add to the other plaudits already made. A classic film, filled with classic scenes, memorable lines, and fine performances. I have seen it at least 50 times, starting with its original theatrical release when I was a kid, right through its current place in my video library. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid classic, March 15 2000
This review is from: Kiss of Death (VHS Tape)
This great piece of cinema has lost none of its punch in more than 50 years. Even more starkly photographed than most "film noir." Makes you realize, if you don't already, that filmmakers and actors knew what they were doing back then, frequently producing results far superior to most of their modern counterparts.
