While will intentioned, I can only assume that the previous reviews were written by Afshin-Jam's friends and family. I think it is safe to to say that the music and lyrics in this album are both juvenile. The lyrics are unsophisticated and fragmented and musically speaking, you will be hard pressed to find a melody in any of the songs. Sounds like the music was written by a kid picking up a guitar for the first time. I cannot imagine why anyone would buy this album. Falls short on inspiring anyone, especially when you can hardly stand to listen to her terrible voice. Have no idea how this album ever got made, defies logic. Totally overproduced to make up for her vocal shortcomings and crappy music.

For me, this was the height of Celine's music and voice. Nothing contrived or overly rehearsed, just deep and raw emotion permeating beautiful and meaningful lyrics, many by the wonderful Jean-Jacques Goldman.

4.0 out of 5 stars In the Absence of Good Medical Literature, a Great Beginner's Guide to Hidradenitis Suppurativa., June 10 2015

Painful lumps, what appear to be large pimples, full of blood and pus appearing under your arms, breasts, in your groin area or neck? They do not go away and even burst open and discharge an unpleasant smelling fluid/ Feel like someone is pouring hot scalding water on your skin? Maybe you feel like there is a hot fire poker under this abscess? Feel like you are being stabbed when you try to move your arms or legs? If you said yes to any of these questions, you may have the chronic disease known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Julie Grace's book, edited by James Greenland, MD, provides a very basic yet comprehensive introduction into how this often ignored chronic disease Hidradenitis Suppurativa manifests itself, what symptoms look like and how you can attempt to treat it via the current options available (limited), of course you should assess, in detail, the efficacy of any treatment-medical or alternative thoroughly with your own doctor. In the absence of literature given to HS patients from the medical community, I think this small book/booklet almost is a good starting point before you decide to venture onto the internet and read the horrific and what can be very overwhelming tales of HS patients, although most who have HS usually turn to the internet first and since you are reading this, then you very likely have. The author is very up front about the minimal knowledge surrounding this disease.

While there are patient run support groups for HS online, in general, the information is scarce (although this is slowly improving). Most of the information in this booklet can easily be obtained from the internet for free if cost is a factor and for many with HS who struggle to function on a daily basis, cost is almost always an issue. This booklet can be a way to introduce HS to your loved ones, friends, family, and especially an intimate partner, so they know what HS is and so they know that HS is not at all contagious (or you can print of material online but make sure it is vetted by a professional). If you are advocating for HS funding, this material can be a guide for those you are trying to reach out to. The best source of information is a medical specialist or well-informed general practitioner, keep in mind that not all doctors actually know what HS is, so your best bet is a dermatologist even though HS is likely an auto-immune disease but they really do not know what the underlying cause of the inflammation is and this book ,while including in the title "Causes," will not adequately explain to you the etiology (nobody knows), instead it will begin at the point where the inflammation under the skin has already begun and how that can lead to the abscesses, primarily where you have major sweat glands and where skin folds, which are the signature symptom of HS. Again, the author is up front about the limited knowledge surrounding the cause(s).

I think every HS patient I have ever met or read about has confided in me that they were extremely embarrassed by the condition because they thought it was somehow hygiene related, it is not, but if you find yourself thinking you have HS and are not ready to seek medical treatment (although I encourage you to do so immediately, as early interventions can keep the disease from progressing beyond Stage I) then this is a good account (will probably scare you into seeking medical attention), by a medical professional, of what HS is and how you can begin to manage it. We desperately need more awareness surrounding the disease, so we can get research dollars invested into discovering the nature and causes of this dreadful disease, so we can find a cure, in the least a treatment that actually works long-term. HS is already estimated to be in 1% of the population, but many think this number is much higher and possibly up to 5% due to inadequate diagnostic tools, the lack of patients seeking medical attention out of fear or shame, and or the misdiagnosis of the disease as mere acne or folliculitis and we all know HS is so much more.

Often in the literature you will hear "Acne Inversa" being used interchangeably with Hidradenitis) BUT as a patient and 18 year sufferer of HS, I wholly reject this and I hope you do too because, while acne can effect one's self-esteem, leave scars and even be painful, acne is not anywhere near as debilitating and depressive as HS and it is important for your support network to know this too. HS can severely limit one's quality of life by limiting one's ability to work, go to school, have a romantic relationship, enjoy leisurely activities or even go out in the sun. Basic things such as sleeping, taking a shower, getting dressed, sitting for long periods of time and exercising can all of the sudden become debilitating, painful and extremely arduous. Simple things like concentration can be diminished due to the chronic pain endured by sufferers of HS. My sincerest hopes that if you are diagnosed, you do not let the disease isolate you or make you hide in fear or shame. Most importantly please practice self-compassion and please please let others in and let them support you. The disease can be very isolating and depressing if you insulate yourself and one of the best ways to combat or prevent your mental health from declining (most HS sufferers also have some form of depression) is to build a support network, this includes those in your immediate family and circle of friends, your medical team (you will need at least one supportive doctor - may take a few bad ones before you find a sympathetic and knowledgeable one) and even those in our online communities because sometimes you can find a lot of hope from others who are managing the disease and also a lot of good advice that ill-informed doctors cannot provide you, however, do not compare yourself to others because we are all experiencing the disease relative to our own lives and experiences and likely to different degrees. Some patients advocate diets that sometimes don't work for some of us. If you find someone is not supportive or is judging you, they may not fully understand the debilitating nature of the disease both physically and mentally and that will take some sharing on your part and maybe an introductory book like this and later the images of the disease if you feel comfortable. If the person is still not supportive, then they are likely a jerk and you should be surrounding yourself with compassionate people and if none are around in your daily life, there are plenty in the HS community who are willing to be there for you. Chronic disease therapy groups are often available through medical communities too.

I hope this book starts you on a path of inquiry regarding your HS. There is a lot more to be understood and that happens when we ask questions. Challenge your medical practitioners when they do not give you a satisfactory answer or you do not want to take a recommended treatment that has not worked for you in the past, you may come across this with the antibiotics you will surely be presented with at some point during this day/nightmare. Make sure your treatment has a high degree of efficacy. I hope that others like Julie Grace will write about this disease and advocate for HS patients because information is the key to eradicate this disease.

Now, back to my review of the book, a good starting point for anyone who has or cares about someone with HS, while the book has been edited by an MD it is written by an MA but I find that good research is good research. And I won't apologize for the long side-bar as I feel it is my duty to inform anyone possibly listening or reading about HS when presented with an opportunity! Hopefully you found something useful in this review. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but well-being and good health.

I know I love an artist when all I want to do is hear their songs interpreted live. Sarah McLachlan plays for you her biggest hits and some b-sides. She brings something really special to her songs when she sings them live and I often prefer to hear her live albums to the record versions. Great Canadian artist with a unique style who shares her songs and where they come from with her audiences. Simply beautiful!

While the star of the film, Lisa Ray can hardly act, the writing, production and the rest of the cast, make this film a lot of fun for anyone in Canada, Indian background or not. Throws a lot of stereotypes about Canadians of Indian descent to the wayside and lets you laugh at some of the classics, all while mocking classic Bollywood and Hollywood films.

You know how some Greatest Hits collections leave out one or two of the artist's biggest records to make sure you have to buy another cd to get all the goodies, Shania's collection totally does not do this!!! It has every single one of her major hits. I own Shania's entire collection and love some of the songs that were not megahits but it is great to have all the favourites on one disc. Definitely something worth owning and if you don't have any of Shania's old stuff, this is all you will really need. If you want to introduce Shania to a friend or get someone a gift, this is a great option for sure. Great as a workout disc too. Shania grew up impoverished, so it really seems like she or somebody on her team wants to make sure her fans get great value for their money. I saw her live and she sounds just as a great live. A great Canadian artist and one of the few truly Greatest Hits albums.

While the documentary is well produced, I do not think it presented anything new that anyone who understands everyday economics and business did not already know. I think while the documentary showed us the scathing power of modern corporations, which we all often need a reminder of, I think it entirely ignored the role of governments and ourselves as citizens in allowing these entities to proliferate. While corporations have enormous powers and capacity to influence the way we organize our societies, there is certainly a lot we can do and government regulation and democratic institutions should have been a critical element in this documentary that I found was sorely overlooked. I think for people who do not pay attention to to their own economic condition or those that are falling by the wayside, those folks could learn a lot from this. Definitely something that should be shown to young people as this is something they should keep in the back of their minds while they pursue their educations, both those in commerce and those outside, especially those who want to be involved in governance.

To understand present economics and the turmoil the world is in, one must make an effort to learn where the ideas that govern our society arose and in what context these ideas were born, whom or what were the policies and philosophies addressing? A concise History of Economic Thought is a great place to start. The ideas are presented in a clear and concise manner. I used this text as a companion to many of the primary texts I have read on Economics and it has helped me sharpen my analysis and find distortions in political commentary and public policy on economics in the present context. There is way too much dogma in present day Economic thought and practice and it is frightening how little evidence-based policy is put into practice. Justifications for certainly policies which once upon a time in history made sense, are clearly irrational in our modern world, yet many economists and academic institutions seem to promote and practice centuries old ideas without critical thought. This book gives you a great starting point to examine your own thinking when it comes to Economics, as you will keep the context and foundations of modern economic thought in your mind.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great writing but cliched story., June 11 2014
This review is from: Everything Was Goodbye (Paperback)
A wonderful writing style, beautifully descriptive to begin. While the novel started out with a lot of potential it began to head in a downward direction when the characters, which started off strong, took on every day indo-canadian stereotypes. What were supposed to be narrative surprises or plot twists read like scenes from an incredibly corny D-grade Bollywood film where things are easily predictable and sensationalized or worse they read as a racially stereotyped newspaper article written on Vancouver's Indo-Canadian community by the racially biased Vancouver Sun newspaper. One of the main climaxes in the book was just a failure and unnecessary, a prime example of conventional stereotyping of the Indo-Canadian male. Would be nice if she could have gone beyond the archetypes. Author has a lot of potential and hope to see her be more creative in the future and go beyond negative Indian stereotypes and superficial plot but again, a beautiful writer.
