5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a Britsh Gem, Jan 19 2012
This review is from: Porterhouse Blue (DVD)
A new man is coming to be head master of the college
Porterhouse B*L*U*E.He brings with him new ideas and new
ways of doing things.Unfortunately that is the last thing
that anyone at BLUE wants. It is the ritual for the headmaster
to die of glutonny and they all have.Every meal at the impoverished
college is a banquet. It not not unusual to have pheasant, swan,
or any delicassey that's available. However,if they are broke,
how do they pay for it? Simple. The well to do students pay
big bucks to have some one else take thier exams for them.
The new head master played by Ian Richardson is not aware
of this scam, but quicky discovers that the college is
bankrupt. He goes on an austerity kick which drives head
porter Skullion, played by David Jason up the wall.He is
steadfast in his desire to see no changes what so ever.
He is the self appointed guardian of Portehouse traditions.
They clashes between these two are hilarious.
This satirical look at British pomposity, ritual, and Colleges is
priceless.
If you can appreciate the subtlety of British humor then this movie
will have you rolling with laughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BRITS DO IT BEST !!!, Jan 19 2012
This review is from: New Tricks: Season 1 (DVD)
When it comes to series tv,the Brits are unrivaled.
I only found out about this series last year.
I fell in love with the characters instantly.
That's what makes this series such a hit, they do
in depth charcter studies. You really learn what
makes the characters behave the way they do.
The others reviews will tell you about the series.
I will tell you how to save a large bundle of money
if you want to buy this series.
I discounted using Amazon .CA for 2 reasons.
1) there shipping comes by covered wagon.Meaning
it takes forever to get a product mailed using
standard shipping.
2)there prices for each of this series is highway
robbery.
I checked out Amazon.com and found there prices much better.
I then checked out Amazon .UK and it blew me away.
The difference between ordering all the series(1-8)
from Amazon UK v.s Amazon Com was DOUBLE the savings.
More than enough of a savings to buy a region free dvd player !!!
Plus Amazon .com doesn't have series 8 available at this time.
Yes I am taking into consideration the difference between the
pound and the Cdn dollar. Also,I got the order in 4 days !!!
The picture quality on the dvd's is great and it's in full screen.
Just a couple of asides:
Dennis Waterman who plays Gerry Standing sings the theme song that
you here at the beginning and end of each show. His real life daughter
plays his daughter ( a detective ) in one of the shows.
The wife of Brian Lane, played by Alun Armstrong is actually the
real life wife of Jack Halford, played James Bolam.
I highly reccommend that you buy the series starting with
series # 1 first. It really gives a full understanding of
the characters.Besides the first show is hysterically funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overblown Expectations., Oct 26 2009
This review is from: The Lost Symbol (Hardcover)
I read the reviews here before buying the book.I got the feeling that many of the reviewers had highly overblown expectations.
I got the impression that unless Dan Browns next novel explained (in detail) how Jesus walked on water they were simply not going
to be satisfied with anything less.
And I was right !!
This novel does not dissappoint, unless you expected the above.
As usual the research for this book is superb. Not being an American,I found the in depth descriptions of the nations capitol
buildings really interesting.
Like in all his previous books Mr.Brown knows how to create tension
and fast paced action. My first reading was done quickly. My second reading really allowed me to to enjoy the book immensely.
I dare to say that if this had been Dan Browns first book,
the nay sayers would be lining up to give bravo reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy at AMAZON UK, Sep 5 2007
This review is from: Girls' Night (DVD)
Shame on the sellers of this great little movie.
One is selling it for $129,and the other is for
$707.At Amazon US they are selling it for $248.US.

Save big and buy from Amazon UK.They are selling
it for 18 pounds.That's roughly $35 cdn.
It is a region 2 dvd.Hope this helps others from
being gouged.

Save yourself a few bucks and buy the 2 disc version from the U.K.The picture quality is relatively good and the movie is all there.
I own a Phillips dvp642 dvd player and it plays everything that I throw at it. How this cheap little player $89.00 at wal Mart
is able to convert a pal dvd to be able to play on an ntsc tv I don't know, but it does.It also will play region 2 disc without a problem.
I have ordered many region 2/PAL discs from Amazon U.K because they are not available in Canada or the U.s.and they have all
played perfectly.

If you are interested in the battle of Tobruk, you would be better
off opting for two Richard Burton movies about thIS battle:
The Desert Rats or Raid on Rommel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming story, Jan 15 2004
This review is from: Majority of One, a (VHS Tape)
This movie is truly hopeful and uplifting.
Roz Russell ( Mrs.Jacoby) plays a Jewish American widow who's son was killed by the Japanese during WW11.
She,her daughter and son-in-law take a ship to Japan because the son-in-law is to play a part in the trade relations
conference between the Japanese and U.S.
On board ship she is introduced to a widowed Japanese businessman Koichi Asano ( Alec Guinness)who will lead the Japanese contingent in the trade negotiations.Mr.Asano's wife
was killed at Hiroshima.
Mrs.Jacoby is polite but very cool towards Mr.Asano at their initial meeting, but over time and several chance encounters
these two people overcome their hostilities and prejudices to
see each other as gentle loving human beings.
Both Russell and Guiness exude such warmth and charm that it is
understandable how these two people from seemingly diverse
backgrounds could develop tender feelings for each other.
As an aside, look for Russell getting a little tipsy while
at Mr.Asano's home.
This is definately a two thumbs up movie.
PLEASE bring it out on DVD.
