5.0 out of 5 stars Betty Hutton is Awesome now in vivid TECHNICOLR on DVD!!, March 4 2002
"Annie Get Your Gun" (1946) Broadway Musical ran for 1147 performances starring Ethel Merman (her signature song became "There's No Business, Like Show Business") prompted the MGM TECHNICOLOR movie adaptation in 1950 starring Betty Hutton in the leading role. MGM's promising singing baratone, Howard Keel would be Annie's love interest, Frank Butler.
The legendary Irving Berlin (God Bless America, White Christmas) penned the incredible lyrics & music for this explosive musical.
Maximizing the TECHNICOLOR the vivid colorful movie sets & costumes exploded off the screen!! Now this remastered DVD delivers this incredible color to our home as good as the original 1950 theatrical release.
NOTE: Even though this Musical is dated and reflects it to be a period piece we do get to see the world, Broadway & Hollywood of 1950. So sit back & enjoy the entertainment, delightful songs & lyrics of Irving Berlin performed by the wonderful, Betty Hutton & Howard Keel.
Summary: Loosely based on Annie Oakley's (Hutton)real life with the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show" & her stormy relationship with fellow male-nemisis sharpshooter Frank Butler (Keel). The music provides us with toe tapping & knee slapping excitement. The song & dance numbers are lively & colorful. Eventually as all early Broadway/Hollywood stories go, a happy ending prevails followed by a grand finale number!!! Proving "There's No Business, Like Show Business".
This DVD is Outstanding. Picture Quality is unbelievable! The extra features are excellent. To include; Introduction & brief Annie Oakley history by Susan Lucci, 4 Movie Outakes, Production Notes, Trailer & Audio Session Track for "There's No Business, Like Show Business". Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allyson is Great in this 1947 TECHNICOLOR Musical now on DVD, March 4 2002
This review is from: Good News [Import] (DVD)
This second film (1947 Technicolor) post WWII version of the Broadway Musical classic "Good News" has June Allyson providing us with a nice song & dance lead. The original 1930 version with Penny Singleton (aka "BLONDE" movie series of the 30 -50's) was a Depression upbeat/ fun, crazy go lucky musical.
The "Good News" 1947 remake has been beautifully remastered & provides us with the most vivid & clear TECHNICOLOR transfer imagineable!! It is just perfect! June Allyson referred to as "the girl every man wants to marry & the girl every woman wants as a friend" proves her musical talents both in song & dance. Especially in the "Varsity Rag" dance finale". Allyson even commented this was one of her favorite films. (It shows!!!)...
A very pleasing musical DVD with feature extras to include: 1947 deleted scenes & from the 1930 Black & White version dance numbers with Penny Singleton, Production Notes & Trailer. This DVD delivers what it promises, "GOOD NEWS". Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars National Geographic does a great job w/Fact & Fantasy on DVD, Feb. 20 2002
National Geographic, Beyond the Movie Series has done a commendable job analyizing and comparing JRR Tolkien classic fantasy world of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy using Peter Jacksons passion & Tolkien detailed epic book to film Part I: The Fellowship of the Ring to our worlds past geography.
This documentation brings up some interesting questions regarding Tolkiens fantasy world and his real life experiences. JRR Tolkien was a WWI veteran, Oxford Scholar, Professor of Languages and English Legends. He discovered that England was robbed of their early legends & history through 5th & 6th century invasions. Tolkien decided to re-create an entire world including an Elven Language (both written & spoken) which revolved around England & its mystical past using ancient castles & landmarks as references.
National Geographic explains Tolkiens amazing world of Middle Earth vs our world, the struggle between good & evil, the familiarity of the places, heroes & villains, and the parallel challenges in our world! Using Peter Jacksons film clips adds to this fascinating epic story tremendously. Pure entertainment & very informative. A great addition to the "Lord of the Rings" DVD library.
This DVD is a Full Screen presentation, approximately 60 minutes with no extras except National Geographic ads. The DVD transfer picture quality & sound are excellent!! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vincent Minnelli Comedy comes to WideScreen DVD !, Feb. 15 2002
This review is from: Designing Woman (Widescreen) (DVD)
The great director Vincent Minnelli (Gigi, American in Paris & Meet Me in St. Louis) does an outstanding job presenting us with the 50's comedy "Designing Woman". Lauren Bacall is gorgeous in the lead and with a rare comedic performance gives us a great movie. Her leading man Gregory Peck also in a rare comedic role pulls it off masterfully under the direction of Minnelli.
This Warner Brothers DVD is very nicely done. The movie & color quality is outstanding and the WideScreen presentation fills the screen with the stars personalities. DVD Extras include a Trailer & behind-the-scenes mini documentary featuring the Costume Designer Helen Rose.
Summary: New York High Society Designing Woman (Bacall - is outstanding) meets a New York Newspaper Sports Writer (Gregory Peck - a nice change & he was delightful) at the Beverly Hills Hotel, California while on their respective assignments. After a shakey start, fall madly in love and in a few days marry.
As they return to the "Big Apple" the real adventure begins. The original Odd Couple now realize they both had separate lives and different committments. How they deal with the transition is real Hollywood humor and with the philosophy of the 1950's there must be a happy ending after they pay their dues. A Great movie!!
A very nice movie showing us the Hollywood and the Big stars we know & love to see. Enjoy.
