The King's Good Servant But God's First: The Life and Writings of Saint Thomas More
The King's Good Servant But God's First: The Life and Writings of Saint Thomas More
by James Monti

5.0 out of 5 stars ...those who would lose their life for my sake will find it., Aug 11 2003
This is an excellent biography of a courageous saint whose faith in God was stronger than his fear of death. While the book provides sufficient historical detail and background, its narrative structure is unique in that the author places events within the context of More's faith. Thankfully, Monti avoids a posthumous psychoanalysis of his subject (as many biographers are wont to do). Instead, he illuminates the saint's inner life by tapping into More's own thoughts, as revealed in his published works and correspondence. The result is a rich portrait of a man whose warmth and courage derived directly from his faith in God and the Catholic Church.

Monti synthesizes More's apologetical writings in response to the Reformation, revealing More's keen theological acumen. What impressed me the most, however, was discovering the depth and richness of More's spirituality and faith. More's insight into Christ's agony in the garden of Gethseme and during His passion were particularly moving. It becomes clear that More's understanding and appreciation of Christ's suffering strenthened his faith when he needed it most.

I would especially recommend this inspirational book to young people, who could choose no better role model than Saint Thomas More. He stands as a beacon of light in today's culture of moral relativism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and compelling, Jun 19 2003
By What Authority is a wonderful read. Shea's prose is witty and his argument is compelling. He describes how as a young evangelical Christian he encountered the writings of revisionist theologians who compose the "Jesus Seminar." After studying the Jesus Seminar's attacks on the central tenets of Christianity, Shea gradually realized that the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura could not provide a sufficient basis of authority to adequately defend his Christian faith. Shea's book marvelously describes his faith journey to the Catholic Church how and why the Church has an articulable and authentic basis of authority on which one can confidently stake one's faith. This is a refreshingly quick read (it took me a day) but the argument is timeless.

Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church, a 2000-Year History

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollicking good read, May 31 2003
Crocker's wit and refusal to mince words makes for an informative, rollicking good read. Triumph is a concise, unapologetic apology for Catholic truth and how it has perservered throughout the ages. This survey begins with the Acts of the Apostles and ends with our present pope. See how history lends credence to Christ's promise that the gates of hell will not prevail against his Church. Check it out!

Hostage To The Devil: The Possession and Exorcism of Five Contemporary Americans
Hostage To The Devil: The Possession and Exorcism of Five Contemporary Americans

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing but faith-inspiring, Mar 20 2003
Someone, maybe C.S. Lewis, said that Satan operates the best when people don't believe he exists. This harrowing book makes it quite clear that evil exists indeed. Malachi Martin chronicles how one comes to be "possessed" and how the exorcism process works. He also identifies which types of human behavior and practices make one especially susceptible to possession. Notably, however, Martin explains that it is the individual's free will which must ultimately consent to possessio--and cooperate with the exorcist for the exorcism to be successful. What impressed me most was the bravery of the priests who willingly become "hostage to the devil" during an exorcism. The possessing spirits place incredible pressure on the priests, who must place their trust entirely in Christ (and never in their own abilities) to see the exorcism to completion. I highly recommend this book which sheds light on an uncomfortable but important subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, Mar 4 2003
This review is from: On Being Catholic (Paperback)
This is a beautiful book that was instrumental in my decision to convert to Catholicism. With warmth and respect, Howard explains how and why Catholicism is different that Protestantism. Howard uses many poignant illustrations and analogies to make his points. Especially enlightening is Howard's treatment of the Catholic beliefs on Mary and the Communion of Saints. This is a aspect of Catholicism that especially troubles many Protestants and Howard's astute treatment of the subject should allay fears and dispell misunderstandings. In sum, this is a wonderful book and an excellent introduction to Catholic belief and practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great intro for curious Protestants, Feb 25 2003
This review is from: Hail, Holy Queen (Hardcover)
This book is a great introduction to the Catholic beliefs on Mary--especially for curious Protestants with open minds. Although he could legitimately do so, Dr. Hahn avoids relying solely on Tradition to explain Catholic Mariology. Rather, this biblically erudite scholar presents and explains the Marian beliefs from the perspective of "covenant theology." His analysis and exegesis is prescient and sound. This should appeal to Protestants who are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the bases of Catholic Tradition and Apostolic succession.

Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism
Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism
by Scott Hahn
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 12.59

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, Feb 25 2003
This book is both an inspiring personal testimony and a convincing apology for the Catholic faith. I was especially impressed with the Hahns' conversion story because they had nothing to gain but spiritual fulfillment. They parted with career, friends, family, etc., for the sake of the truth. Their motivation for converting gives them a lot of credibility in my opinion.

Crossing the Tiber: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historical Church
Crossing the Tiber: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historical Church
by Steve Ray
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful!, Feb 25 2003
Crossing the Tiber is a well-researched, heavily foot-noted account of the discovery of truths that lead the author to the Catholic faith. Stephen Ray's grasp of Church history and the early fathers makes this book a powerful tool for chiseling away Protestant misconceptions of the Catholic faith. Further, Ray's erudite appeals to the early Church fathers very convincingly shows that the earliest Christians were indeed Catholics. I am in the process of converting to Catholicism and this book was integral in my journey to Rome. I highly recommend it, along with Robert Sungenis' "Not By Scripture Alone" and "Catholicism and Fundamentalism" by Karl Keating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating!, Feb 25 2003
Reading this book was one of my first steps in the direction of the Catholic Church. Growing up, I had always heard vague disapproval of the Catholic Church; lots of unspecific allusions to Mary-worship, "working your way to heaven", etc. Reading this book, however, lifted the veil and revealed the beauty, depth and truth that is the Catholic faith. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to lay aside preconceived biases and begin an open-minded examination of the Catholic faith. I'm confident that in so doing you will be surprised by truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Razor-sharp argument!, Feb 25 2003
I highly recommend this book by Karl Keating. Keating, a former lawyer, combines clear reasoning and potent prose to defend the Catholic faith from unfounded and ill-informed Fundamentalist attacks.

In the first portion of the book Keating chronicles the origins of Fundamentalist anti-Catholicism. In the second half he systematically refutes fundamentalist attacks on Catholicism and proceeds to go on the offensive, effectively proving the authority of the Catholic Church.

I was a Protestant leaning heavily towards Catholicism when I began this book. When I put it down I had, so to speak, "crossed the Tiber." I would encourage all Protestants to challenge yourself by reading this book. If nothing else, you'll better understand Catholicism and solidify your own beliefs.

I would also highly recommend Peter Kreeft's "Catholic Christianity", Robert Sungenis' "Not By Scripture Alone", and "Crossing the Tiber" by Stephen Ray. These books are truly compelling and serve as excellent primers for Protestants interested in Catholicism.
