Death in Rough Water: A Merry Folger Mystery
Death in Rough Water: A Merry Folger Mystery
by Francine Mathews
Edition: Hardcover
17 used & new from CDN$ 0.46

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious, July 11 2004
This book is so pretentious I found it hard to believe anyone would publish it. I hated it too. The author spends so much time trying to be witty and urbane that the story suffers, and the readers also.

Murder Makes a Pilgrimage: A Sister Mary Helen Mystery
Murder Makes a Pilgrimage: A Sister Mary Helen Mystery
by Carol Anne O'Marie
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars A fun, old-fashioned mystery., April 8 2004
The story follows two nuns, Sister Mary Helen and Sister Eileen, who regularly are mixed up in murder. In this case, they win a contrived "free" trip to Spain to visit the final destination of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. The sisters meet an odd mixture of fellow winners, including one haughty upper-crust couple, two young adult women who were childhood girlfriends, a retired college professor and his wife, and a stereotypic crass couple who own a furniture store. In Santiago they encounter a clever police chief, his wife and their niece who has agreed to help assist the tour guide.

While the characters don't actually make the pilgrimage, the book does give a good account of the story of St. James.

In the cathedral, one of the pilgrims is brutally murdered, her body discovered by Sr. Mary Helen. From there the mystery unfolds in a standard way. Okay, the plot is formulaic, but entertainingly so, and I found the story interesting and well written. It was an easy read, straightforward and had little pretense.

This was my first of this series and I plan to read more. It is lightweight, but in a fun, escapist way.

2.0 out of 5 stars A great album., Mar 20 2004
This review is from: Mavericks (Audio CD)
These guys get better with every outing, and this album is terrific. I haven't stopped playing it since I got it. The vocals are clear, and the harmonies are a thrill. Plus they sound like they are having fun, not always true with groups who re-form. There is no one who does toe-tapping honky tonk like the Mavericks, and there are some great cuts on this album. Buy it.

I like this album, and think these guys have a long career ahead of them. I am usually not a fan of Tex-Mex, this group is the exception that made me take notice. I saw a cut on a television ad, listened to it a couple more times on a service, and decided to get the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book., Jan 9 2004
I was deciding between this book and one other, and chose this one. Reading it, I was happy to see that I had made the right choice. This is a great book, well illustrated, written with insight. The basic how-to is very helpful, I learned exactly what I wanted. For anyone who would like to learn how to work with wire, and what tools you need, plus how to use them--buy this book

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money., Dec 9 2003
This review is from: Holiday Affair (VHS Tape)
I thought this was a a cheap shot to cash in on the season. It has poor character development, stilted language and a hackneyed plot. It just isn't a cozy Christmas film. Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh rely on sterotypical roles like the "tough guy with a heart of gold" and she is the damsel in distress who almost marries the wrong man." I think a much better holiday sleeper is Christmas in Connecticut.

The Beach House
The Beach House

2.0 out of 5 stars Not even a howler., Oct 4 2003
I waited to read this book after seeing it on the best seller lists, and expected a pretty good story. Wrong. It is dull and plodding and has little suspense. I also don't understand how James Patterson could put his name on this unless he was in debt to loansharks. It is as if someone else wrote it, someone with no experience. This is a real stinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh, la-la, Sep 5 2003
This review is from: Michael Bublé (Audio CD)
Excellent and well produced, this is a great cd. When Michael Buble is compared with Sinatra, it is more than true. All the tracks on this cd are fun, not a sour note anywhere. I stumbled on it by going to the Reprise Records site after a Neil Young and Crazy Horse concert (I bought Greendale too.) If you like swing, you will love this album.

Etruscan Chimera
Etruscan Chimera
by Lyn Hamilton
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this down either., Aug 25 2003
I loved this book, it is exciting, well-plotted and very well written. I was surprised that this book didn't get more attention because it is as rivetting as The DaVinci Code, maybe even more. Lyn Hamilton is quite skilled at developing a sense of place, I have wanted to visit every locale she writes about. You won't be disappointed with this mystery either, it is as good as any Hitchcock had in his best days.
