Search Tips

Keyword Search

Keyword Search boxes can be found at the top of most pages of our Movies & TV store. Enter one or more keywords, using any combination of the film's title, director, or featured actor(s). If you use more than one keyword, our search engine will restrict the results to DVDs that match all the keywords you enter.

Here are some examples of Keyword Search:

  • Entering "harrison ford" finds DVDs featuring performances by Harrison Ford.
  • Entering "blue" finds DVDs featuring the word "blue" (e.g., The Big Blue, Deep Blue Sea, Blue Velvet, etc.).
  • Entering "spielberg" finds DVDs directed by Steven Spielberg.
  • Entering "dark davis" finds the DVD Dark Victory featuring a performance by Bette Davis.
  • Entering "walken ferrara" finds DVDs directed by Abel Ferrara and featuring performances by Christopher Walken.

Advanced Search

Our Advanced Search allows you to search by any combination of many aspects of the DVD. Here are some examples in the use of Advanced Search:

  • Entering "expectations" in the Title field and "lean" in the Director field finds the 1947 version of Great Expectations, directed by David Lean.
  • Entering "robert redford" in the Actor field and "sydney pollack" in the Director field finds all films on DVD on which Redford and Pollack worked together.
  • Selecting "Exact Match" in the drop-down menu and entering "matrix" in the Title field finds only The Matrix.
  • Selecting "$15 & Under" in the Price field finds all DVDs priced at or below $15.
  • Selecting "Italian" as the Language Audio Track finds all DVDs of films made in the Italian language.
  • Selecting "anamorphic widescreen" as the Picture Format and "dolby digital 5.1" as the Audio Type finds all DVDs that offer both anamorphic widescreen picture format and Dolby Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack.
  • Checking the Deleted Scenes and Commentary boxes under Special Features finds all DVDs that feature scenes deleted from the film's original release, as well as an audio commentary track.
  • Entering "coppola" in the Director field, selecting the "anamorphic widescreen" Picture Format, and checking the Commentary box under Special Feature finds all DVD films directed by Francis Ford Coppola that are presented in anamorphic widescreen and feature an audio commentary track.

Browsing for Movies & TV Shows

Don't know exactly what kind of movie or TV show you're in the mood for? Use the links on the top navigation bar of our Movies & TV store to browse by genre or search for bestsellers, new and future releases, and more.

DVD Technical Information

Please note that all DVDs sold by Amazon.ca follow the NTSC format and contain North American country code information ("Region 1"). These discs will play on DVD machines intended for use in North America. DVD players outside of North America might not be able to view these titles because of incompatible country codes or video standards. If you're interested in purchasing Region 2 DVDs, you might consider visiting one of our international sites other than Amazon.ca.

Additional title-specific information can be found by clicking the "technical information" link in the navigation bar on the left side of any title's product information page. Information typically found there includes studio, running time, reason for rating, theatrical release date, DVD release date, sound particulars, aspect ratio, and discographical information.

Need More Information About a Product?

The only information we can give you about a particular item is what we display on the product information page for that item. If you don't find the information there, visit our partner site, the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com).

Viewing Previews and Trailers

Occasionally, you'll see links to promotional video clips on the product information pages for selected CDs, Blu-rays, DVDs, and VHS videos. It's best to have a fast connection, such as DSL or a cable modem, to play these clips. Also, you'll need to have Microsoft's Windows Media Player or RealNetworks' RealPlayer installed on your system.

DVD Terminology
  • Anamorphic DVDs: Anamorphic DVDs have been specially mastered to allow for the vertical manipulation of resolution lines. The technology enhances resolution to 480 lines on a television set with a 16:9 aspect ratio, resulting in finer detail. Anamorphic DVDs are intended for specifically enhanced widescreen TVs with aspect ratios of 16:9, but they can still be played on regular TVs.
  • DTS: Our DVD store does offer titles equipped with DTS audio format. You can find these titles by conducting a keyword search for "dts." Please note that, in order to best take advantage of any DTS-encoded product, a 5.1 audio system must be employed. While DTS-encoded DVDs will operate on other DVD players, you'll need to select Dolby 2.0 sound on your receiver when playing these DVDs on non-DTS players.
  • Dual-layer: A dual-layer disc has two layers of data, both of which are readable from the same side. This allows for twice as much storage as a single-layer disc--more than four hours of video. Often, these discs are used for longer movies or to provide different editions of a film (such as the theatrical release and the director's cut) on the same disc. All DVD players can read dual-layer discs.
  • Keep case: A keep (or snap) case is a plastic case that holds DVDs. It's about 40 per cent larger than a CD case and snaps open and closed.
Widescreen Versus Standard Editions

Many of our movies and TV titles are available in both widescreen and standard versions. Widescreen, or letterbox, editions reproduce the film as it is shown in a theatre, as a rectangle with an average aspect ratio of 16:9, as opposed to the more square TV aspect ratio of 4:3. Black bars are placed at the top and bottom of the screen to preserve this rectangular image on a TV screen.

On the other hand, standard versions of films have been reformatted to fit the proportions of your TV screen. This reformatting often means cutting off the left and right edges of the original picture. Because films are produced in a variety of height-to-width ratios, the amount of picture loss would be different for each title. The format of each video should be listed on the product information page for that title.

Currently, there is no way to search specifically for DVDs in widescreen format, but the format of each DVD title in our catalogue should be listed on that item's product information page. Many DVDs feature both widescreen and standard formats on the same disc.
